The Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine As the story opens, Baby Hugs is chasing a floating bumble bee. Baby Tugs is licking honey off his paw. He sees Baby Hugs too close to the edge of the cloud and rushes to save her. But he trips and goes sliding toward the edge himself. Gram catches them both and tells them to slow their role. They aren’t Care Bears just yet. Tugs says he will be soon tho and tries to make himself look taller.
Tenderheart is looking through a telescope at the town below for anyone who needs help. (Wish Bear is there with him). He asks if he sees anyone and he tells he he’s about to. Outside a hardwear store, a tough boy and his thugs have gathered. The boys ask Lumpy what he’s going to do and he tells them to chill and just see.
A boy comes out carrying a big bag named Paul. Lumpy shoves his bat between Paul’s fet and trips him. Out of his bag falls nuts, bolts, wires, and springs. Paul says he did that on purpose and asks why he keeps picking on him. Lumpy says because he’s an oddball and he and his friends don’t like oddballs. Then they run off. Paul vows that one day he’ll get even with them.
Professor Coldheart is watching on his ice-cycle and laughing. He loves to watch kids playing mean tricks but he can’t stick around. He’s got other things to do. The Care Bears decide Paul needs some help before things get out of hand so they jump into their Cloud Cars and Rainbow Racers.
None of the Care Bears notice that Hugs and Tugs have slipped into the back of one of the cars.Once in his laboratory, Coldheart calls his assistant Frostbite to him. He asks is the machine fixed and Frostbite says it’s all ready. So, they start it up. Then there’s an explosion. Coldheart gets pissed and blames Frostbite, but then he has an idea. He says “the boy” knew about machines. Then he orders Frostbite to find him and bring him there.
Paul is passing the playground still with revenge on his mind. A voice over his shoulder says you don’t make any friends looking like that. He looks up and sees the Care Bears (all of em). They say they’re the Care Bears and they’ve come to be his friend. He says he doesn’t have any. They say anyone would be his friend if he just showed that he cared. Funshine tells him he shouldn’t react in anger because of what Lumpy did.
Another voice tho tells him he doesn’t have to listen to what they say. Then tells him to look. As he does, he sees the bat Lumpy holding freeze solid. When the ball hits it, the bat shatters. Paul and Frostbite fall over laughing. Frostbite tells him to come with him and they’ll have some fun. Tenderheart asks him what about making friends. Paul says it’s too late. Tenerheart says it’s never to late if you care enough.
The Care Bears go back to have a conference but Hugs and Tugs who’ve slipped out the car aren’t quick enough to get back in the car and end up getting left. The Care Bears decide it’s not enough to tell Paul he can make friends. They have to *show* him. Grams tells them Hugs and Tugs are lost and she thinks they might have went with them. So, they decide to go back where Paul was. But it’s too late. Coldheart has spotted them. Tugs tries to be brave and says he’s not scared of anything. Coldheart says we’ll see about that, snatches them up, and stuffs them in a sack. The Professor tells Paul what he needs done and throws in the incentive they can use the freeze ray on Lumpy and his buddies. Paul says he can try. He does fix the Care-Less Contraption (which is what it’s called) but then he starts to fall off the ladders. By then the Care Bears have find the tower and Good Luck Bear flies up and hands him a 4-leaf clover.
So, to be clear Coldheart had him climb up a tower from the outside to fix the device. The 4-leaf clover pushes him back up to safety. Wish Bear wishes he’d never done that (fixed the machine? Fallen?) and he wishes he were back on the ground. When he sees who helped him this ungrateful boy tells them “Oh it’s you and don’t start talking to me about friendship. You just helped me get even.” And he runs right back to Coldheart.
When he rans back into Coldheart’s lair he sees Hugs and Tugs frozen in a block of ice. Coldheart says this is what he plans to do to every boy and girl in town. Paul (ashamed) flees the room crying and hides out in a dark corner. The Care Bears try to find him, but Coldheart sets up mirrors, fake walls, and trap doors. But as his sobs grow, the Care Bears are able to locate Paul. Paul tells them about Coldheart’s plans and that he thinks it’s too late to stop him. Tenderheart says it’s never too late if you care enough.
Grumpy says he doesn’t think Paul does, but he says he does and tells them to follow him. By the time they find the Professor he tells the “fuzzy wuzzies” their too late. He’s frozen every kid in town and there’s nothing they can do to melt them. The Care Bears line up and Tenderheart gives the order CARE BEAR STATE. Paul joins them. The machine turns into a rainbow maker and unfreezes the babies and the kids in town. The Professor says he’ll get them for this. Paul says revenge never solves anything. Take it from him. He then decides its time for him to make some friends.
My Thoughts: Weirdly I did not know that there were so many of these books. What’s even stranger is the ones I had and did remember aren’t on Open Library. They have every single one but the few I owned. What I really remembered was Coldheart’s song. “Don’t mess with the Professor. C-C-C-C (Cunning)-C-C C (Clever) Coldheart and the eery way he stared at the little boy with hearts in his eyes (shrudders). This was one CREEPY and HIGH DISTURBING villain. But what I love about these books are the illustrations. They’re always so big, bright, and colorful!

I've hung on to this book since I was 5 years old (I'm now 41). Since so many years have passed, I thought I should read it again last night since I didn't even remember the story. I was pleasantly surprised; I've tried watching old Care Bear cartoons, and as much as I love the nostalgia and the cute bears themselves, the stories tend to be rather dry. But this book is cute and actually follows a plot similar to Care Bears Nutcracker Suite (which my husband and I actually watch every year - and we don't even have kids).
I wouldn't say this is the best story ever, but it's cute, nostalgic, and one of the better stories about the Care Bears. I've decided to hang on to this book. The pictures alone are worth it.
