Marcus Pierce, a strikingly handsome aristocrat with a wicked reputation, inherits guardianship of Arabella Loring and her two younger sisters - and immediately declares his intention to marry them off. But gorgeously defiant Arabella sparks frustration - and something deeply erotic - in Marcus. After matching both wits and swords with her, Marcus concludes that this beautiful and formidable foe must be his. Having sworn off marriage and men, Arabella wishes to be left alone to run her finishing school for young ladies. To that end, she boldly accepts Marcus' intimate challenge: If he can woo and win her within two weeks, she'll take her place in his bed as his wife. However, if she can resist his considerable charms, the Loring sisters will be granted their independence. Thus an extraordinary game of seduction begins...
New York Times bestselling author Nicole Jordan spins delightful tales that simmer with passion and sensuality. In her former life, Nicole grew up as an Army brat, moving frequently and attending high school in Germany. She later earned a civil engineering degree from Georgia Tech and spent eight years as a manufacturing manager making disposable diapers and toilet tissue! Currently Nicole lives in the Rocky Mountains of Utah with her real-life hero (her husband) and beloved kids (her horses).
With over two-dozen historical romances to her credit and four million books in print, set in numerous eras and locales, Nicole now enjoys chronicling the sparks that fly when Regency lovers play the matrimonial mating game.
One of her novels had the dubious honor of being humorously spotlighted by Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show." On a more serious note, Nicole's romances regularly appear on numerous bestseller lists, including The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and USA Today, and have earned such honors as RITA finalist, RWA's Favorite Book of the Year, the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Historical Romance, and the Dorothy Parker Award of Excellence, presented by a group of over one hundred romance reviewers.
- This was my first Nicole Jordan book. It wasn’t bad but it was not exceptional either. - It had all the makings of a good story but the effect was somewhat clinical. - Zero emotional impact. Did not feel the romance or the chemistry. - On the plus side, great hero, with lots of steam, a heroine who grovelled.
Damn, I miss my laptop. Writing reviews on the GR app is horrible.
Perhaps this is (but only partially to be honest) my shitty day speaking but I finally finished this and boy, do I have a lot to say.
So, I think most of us have had a displeasure of meeting this guy at the bar who would JUST NOT take "no" for an answer, right? No matter how occupied you seem with your phone or engrossed in conversation, there's always this one dude who assumes that just because there's a woman at the bar, she's there to be hit on - and he oh-so-bravely pushes forward, ignoring all the NOT INTERESTED/NOT EVEN REMOTELY INTERESTED signs you continuously send his way.
Well, ladies and gents, Marcus, Lord Danvers, is the regency version of that guy at the bar.
And it's gross.
I remember reading this series when it first came out 10 years ago and, while moderately at best, I still somewhat enjoyed it.
I cannot, with whole honesty, say the same thing now, because of the vibe this book is giving away.
To sum up shortly, the gist of the plot is - there are three Loring sisters and Marcus aka Lord Danvers aka Regency Hero in Setting One ("Rakish Bachelor") has recently become their guardian, although all sisters are over 21 and perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. They all don't wish to marry because of their parents' UNHAPPY MARRIAGE and I use caps lock deliberately to underline how much this fact is spoonfed to a reader throughout the whole book.
Marcus hears out Arabella's (the eldest sister) arguments on this, nods his head in understanding and pretty much goes all: "yeah, yeah, you wanna be independent, I get it but will states I'm to be your guardian so IDC, A MAN IS HERE TO DO HIS DUTY AND TAKE CARE OF YOU NOW"
And then, after exactly two witty exchanges with Arabella, a man who earlier proclaims won't be shackled with marriage that fast, promptly changes his mind to "GoTTa MArrY HeR ASAP" (this, actually, I could've perhaps taken as a plausible plot advancement in regency romance but the way it was written didn't really convince me that his change of mind was anything but a passing fancy).
But the worst part is the way Marcus goes about "convincing" Arabella that they should marry - their whole "courtship" looks pretty much like this:
1) Marcus is tirelessly "silencing her protests with his violent/passionate/otherwise engaging kisses"
2) Marcus is "taking the choice away from her" as Arabella debates whether to welcome his advances or not
3) Marcus is practically dragging Arabella to his bedroom at one point (he actually barges into her bedroom at night, uninvited, they quarrel and Arabella is very much "GET TF OUT OF HERE" but he kisses her to interrupt her and then he drags her to his bedroom for sex - her first time too - to interrupt the whole argument)
(the whole scene pretty much reads as if a caveman is dragging away his woman to his cave)
Cold me old-fashioned (or perhaps new-fashioned) but while I find this courtship many, many things (disturbing at best, rapey at worst), I don't find it sexy in the least.
Perhaps it could fly for 17-year-old me reading these books for the first time but as a jaded seasoned reader with some personal experiences under her belt, I'm saying a hard, firm GTFO to characters like this. Marcuses of the world have, at least in my opinion, overstayed their welcome in the romance world as well - they simply don't belong here anymore.
Other than that, characters seemed very flat to me and I just didn't feel their connection or didn't feel connected to them at all. I might try (re)reading the next in the series just out of curiosity, to see if it better holds up to pressure of time but right now I need something good to wash out the bitter taste this story left in my mouth.
** 2.75 stars ** Ugghhh....what exactly the problem between Nicole Jordan and I is that I read her book 'Heartbreaker' almost a year back which turned out to be one of my best read! From that point onwards I've been reading her other books which are clearly not as great as I expect them to be. Yup, that's the problem : High expectations!! I swear my high expectations make sooo many of the books look like the avarage kind.😑
But I've actually READ some of the most amazing and awesome books which have set the bars too high for the rest of the novels out there!
I love guardian ward romances. With just a single word, we know the power dynamics between the couple and then different authors treat you to varied resolution. H, after a few meetings, realizes that h is a perfect partner for him. Our h has sworn off relationships after her previous beau dumped her at first sign of scandal. Both are immediately attracted to one another but it falls to experienced to make her see that there's much to life.
The courtship and love scenes were quite well done and the passion between the couple was fiery. But it was the care and protectiveness of H that makes the book. He works hard to repair all the past and present hurt in her life.
I am looking forward to reading next books in this series and more from Ms. Jordan.
Blah, the heroine is so stubborn that had I wanted to marry her I would have given up that notion in a third of the book. I am not sure what to rate this read, as I did not like Lily, one of the sisters, I did not like how stubborn all of them are, and I find it funny that they all wanted to be independent and out of the hero's guardianship while they still lived under his roof. That is a topic that no one mentioned in all the pages... So, they did not want him to be a guardian, but they sure would be living in his house?
Another thing I didn't like was how they were all judging everybody through the lenses of their parents marriage. Or the mistakes of others. They were all so influenced that a word from someone would change how they were thinking. It truly frustrated me. So yeah, I am not sure what this book deserves.
The hero was the only reason why I finished this book.
I have read this author a little, only two books. The first one was one of her first ones, and its a bit older, and really enjoyed it. So after hearing great things about the Courtship War series I decided that I needed to give this one a shot. Since my library has the whole series ( I think??). I wanted to start from the beginning, not knowing if it would be easy to catch on or not. You never know though. I found To Pleasure A Lady an amazing story. It definitely sank its tender hooks into my reading spirit and wouldn't let me go. I think I am still feeling the after affects...tingles and more!! There was much that I enjoyed about the way this story played out....but I loved that even if the plot seemed a bit normal, it definitely didn't turn out the way I expected and it had a certain unique voice to it that appealed to my romantic side.
Arabella and her sisters have been ruined in the eyes of society because of the sins of her parents. After her mother abandons them to leave the country with her lover, and her father losing their fortune to gambling and being killed over a woman in a duel. The three sisters are then under the stewardship of their uncle, who could care less about them. So Arabella and her sisters create a school for teaching young girls the finishing touches to be able to deal with the Ton (those who are born into wealth but not into Aristocracy families). Then they are places under the wardship of Marcus Pierce. Marcus doesn't care for the responsibility of the three Loring sisters, who have become a pain in the behind. The eldest has been sending him letter after letter, until she arrives and practically threatens him with his own rapier. When he sees her beauty and fiery spirit, he is instantly wanting her in his bed, but even more than that, she makes him consider marriage for the first time. So with his responsibility to marry them all off, he decides to pursue Arabella and court her. Arabella could care less about getting married again, but when she enters a dangerous wager with him, she wonders if she will be able to resist his charm and sensual nature.
Arabella is a fierce heroine, very passionate and willful and protective of her sisters. She is willing to do whatever it takes to secure their welfare, even her own happiness. Arabella has a very upbeat personality, willing to put a rapier to her ward's throat to get his attention. (definitely one of my favorite moments of the book :) She doesn't back down from a fight, and I really admired her as the match for Marcus. Now lets discus Marcus...a gorgeous specimen of a man. I just fell in lust with him...then love came later of course. (that is how it usually works right??) When he finds someone he feels he could marry, he doesn't hide from his feelings. He isn't one to back down from any challenge, especially from a woman. He is very persuasive, possessive (not too much though), has enough Alpha traits to be appealing, and perfectly balanced with his carefree personality. These two just made me laugh so much, their connection is instantaneous, and there wasn't any moment that I didn't feel their connection.
I am so thrilled to have found a new series that I am excited to read. As the first installment, I have no complaints at all except for the youngest sister (I thought she was a bit extreme in trying to keep Arabella and Marcus apart) But other than that, I couldn't find any fault with this. It instantly grabbed my attention, and I had no issue reading it in a few hours. It definitely quenched my romantic thirst. It wasn't a iffy book or a hard to get into. It starts out with Arabella and Marcus have a bit of a clash, and I loved the instant passion that flares between these two. Such sizzling scenes it could burn down the house or apartment or condo (or wherever you are reading). There is one battle after another, but its very amusing and gets your spirits up. I can't wait for the next in the series!!!
Favorite Quote "We will await you in the hall should you need defending." He saw Arabella stiffen at the quip, but then she laughed, a low melodious sound that once more fired his senses. "I promise not to do him bodily harm." A Pity, was Marcus's first thought; he might have appreciated seeing what she could do his body. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I do not see how I can state my position more clearly, Lord Danvers. I won't marry you for all the spices in India. Is that articulate enough for you to understand?" He raised an amused eyebrow. "Do you know how many women would be elated to receive an offer of marriage from me?" "Then apply to any of them. Doubtless they will be deliriously happy to accept. I would not." "I don't want any other woman. I have chose you, Arabella, and I mean to have you." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "We will not be having a wedding night. And you cannot kiss me witless to convince me otherwise." When his eyes narrowed speculatively on her moth, Arabella realized her mistake. "That was not a challenge," she hurriedly said. "It was a challenge. My male pride is at stake." "Marcus..." she exclaimed as he reached for her. The smile he gave her was utterly beautiful and utterly maddening. "Let me demonstrate, darling." Before she could scurry out of harm's way, he pulled her onto his lap and into his arms. Arabella opened her mouth in protest, but he took possession of it with searing deliberation. Clasping her nape in a firm hold, he gave her a lingering, blatantly sexual kiss that heated her blood and set her pulse racing.
Again, Meh. I used to love Nicole Jordan several years ago. However, her books are a little to 'spoon fed' if that makes any sense. Nothing is left to the imagination, everything is repeated several times in detail. You always know everything the hero is thinking, and it's all one track (which I know is the whole point of romance novels, but I like it when there's a bit more guessing.) I call this a 'flippy, flippy' book. You read it, but you just skim through every 4 pages in 10.
When Marcus Pierce, the Earl of Danvers hears the word “matrimony,” he shudders in horror. Marcus enjoys living a bachelor’s life and carousing around with his best friends, Andrew Moncrief, the Duke of Arden, and Heath Griffin, Marquess of Claybourne. Marcus was formerly a baron, but after the death of a distant relative, he inherited an earldom, including the responsibility of three wards. He is burdened with the three Loring sisters, who have no fortune and have been single way too long, which means finding them husbands.
When the eldest sister, Arabella, visits him in his London home, Marcus is struck speechless because he has never met a woman quite like her. Arabella is a self-proclaimed spinster and bluestocking. She adores her independence and, ever since she was jilted by a former fiancé, she doesn’t want to be married and would rather spend her days teaching manners and society values to wealthy young women who were not born to parents with titles. As Arabella states her case, Marcus can’t help but wonder what her luscious lips would feel like against his own. He decides he will not marry Arabella off to someone else, but will court and marry her himself. He only has to convince Arabella to accept his plans.
Arabella thinks the institute of marriage is a joke since her mother ran way with her lover, leaving her father in disgrace and the family in ruins. Eventually, her father ended up dying in a duel, and Arabella and her sisters were sent to live with an indifferent uncle. Arabella has always watched over her younger sisters; Roslyn, the beauty of the three, and the youngest, Lilian, who is quite the wild one. Marcus writes Arabella to say he will be residing with them. Arabella will try her best to make Marcus see why she is so against marriage. But when Marcus makes a wager with Arabella that she will accept his hand in marriage in two weeks, she decides to play this game, thinking she can withhold her affections from him. But Marcus is quite skilled at seduction, and Arabella is still very much an innocent in the areas of love. As these two begin to learn about each other and what passions they enjoy, Arabella has to decide if she will give up everything she has worked for and marry Marcus without love. But Marcus has fallen in love with Arabella and will try his best to show her that she is the only woman for him, and they can have a marriage very different from her parents.
If you are looking for a typical historical romance with that independent, and spunky heroine, and the hero who shows her the delights of lovemaking, TO PLEASURE A LADY has this perfect scenario. Arabella may tend to grate on the nerves, but it is quite enjoyable to watch her fall in love, that is, into the arms of Marcus, the handsome earl. Along with Marcus’s good friends, Andrew and Heath (who will surely have their own stories to come), Arabella has no choice but to succumb to Marcus’s lovemaking skills. The other Loring sisters, Roslyn and Lilian, bring some witty relief to the story as Arabella has the hard decision, whether or not to continue to be alone, or be with a man who may not love her the way she wants to be loved. Eventually, her younger sisters are the voice of reason, and Arabella decides to live in the moment, which means with Marcus.
Nicole Jordan has set into motion two future stories with Roslyn and Lilian that should be interesting, since Marcus has two eligible male friends. Roslyn's tale, the second book in The Courtship Wars, comes out in March 2008 under the title of TO BED A BEAUTY. Then Lilian’s story, TO SEDUCE A BRIDE, appears in April. TO PLEASURE A LADY is a very easy read with no evil villain or secondary mystery that many historical romances seem to have. The love scenes are plentiful and creative, and by the end, you wish the best for Marcus and his lovely Arabella, the bluestocking of his heart and soul.
Marcus Pierce, Earl of Danvers, who was the most perfect handsome smitten suiter, rich, kind, unprententious, patient--visible to all who meet him except the obstinateheroine Arabella Loring.
That the heroine was so dimwitted was the most aggravating part to this story, otherwise I enjoyed reading how the Earl paid court to Arabella. It just did not make sense, yes even with the story of how the mother ran off in disgrace. Young ladies of quality were raised to want to get married to a titled suiter and produce heirs.
An enjoyable introduction to the series, but I am hoping the next 5 books are not following this same plot formula. Female afraid to get married, male has to go to extraordinary measures to subdue female to get her to the alter.
Maybe I read too many of these HRs and now am getting used to the plot structure and I am tired of it. Male and female fight love and do not realize they are in love until the last 1/4 of the book. Just once I 'd like to see this realization made in the beginning, then let the obstacles commence until the happy ending.
I had a really hard time getting into this book and then finishing it. It simply wasn’t that good. Primarily the issue was a lack of character development. They were very one dimensional.
Arabella’s issues were repeated ad nauseam but they never developed into anything truly deep. Repeating the same issues over and over again isn’t the same as character development. I never felt attached to her and her complete unwillingness to fall in love eliminated any true possibly for any emotional development. She felt exactly the same for the whole book, until the very end when she didn’t. I never got any feels from her. Supposedly she felt driven by passion but it never seemed like she felt a pull towards Marcus. She responded to his advances, but she never made any on her own and was totally fine, save for a bit of disappointment, when he wasn’t making them.
Marcus had absolutely no development at all. We’re never told about his motivations, his past, his fears or desires. At the end of the book I know a few of his interests, a little about his parents marriage and his friends. And thats it. I think only a handful of paragraphs were spent on developing him. Even when he’s rejected by Arabella in the end after he’s fallen in love with her, we don’t get to witness any of his inner thoughts or feelings about it. The few scenes we did get where we got to witness the development of his feelings for Arabella were good. I did get some good feels from him. But they were sparse.
There was a lot of sex in the book but I found it to be uninspired and on the boring side. And I don’t mean that I wanted something kinkier or more risqué. I mean that it lacked feeling. The scenes were described without much emotion being involved. I didn’t feel passion because they were never frantic or desperate for each other. With the exception of one scene, where they finally have sex, almost every physical scene was controlled and happened when they were planned for. I felt no tension, no lust. No aching. No intensity of feeling. If every scene had the intensity of the first full sex scene, it would have been great. But unfortunately they didn’t.
Lastly, I overall found the book to be on the boring side. Not much happens. They have a lot of sex. They talk very little and learn very little about each other. When it's mentioned that they desire or love the other I kept wondering why. Every conversation between Arabella and her sisters is the same. They worry about her falling in love. She insists she’s not. Reasons for not wanting marry are repeated. There’s some stuff to do with the academy that Arabella runs, but its just tea and dancing and described in passing. One student runs away and that’s the “excitement” for the book. And even then there is no conflict between Arabella and Marcus and it’s resolved very quickly. And the story line with her mother is wrapped up in a few pages.
Arabella Loring and her sisters suffered a BIG scandel when her parents where flaunting their adultery. Four years later the sisters find themselves in the hands of a new guardian Marcus Peirce, Lord Danvers. Set against his intentions of him finding husbands for Arabella and her sister she going to confront Lord Davers only to find that he is strikingly handsome. Marcus Peirce, Lord Danvers wanted to find his wards husbands and be ride of them but when Arabella Loring his eldest ward shows up to tell him to leave off his forcing to find them husbands. He never thought that he would want Arabella for himself. Set on winning her he sets a wager for two weeks. If he wins Arabella will marry him. If she wins her sisters and her will have their freedom. The two week courtship is a worldwind of crazy passion and witty battles.
Ceritanya okaylah. So-so. Cuma macam agak flat bila baca tak tahu dimanakah kedudukan klimaks. Ingatkan maybe Julia datang ganggu Arabella ke. Sebab bila penulis menceritakan karakter Julia, cara dia macam tak setuju berpisah dengan Marcus tapi eh??? Just like that? Haish... Dan lagi satu, tentang ibu mereka, senangnya Arabella terima cerita ibunya. Membenci ibunya selama 4 tahun sebab fikir dialah menyebabkan scandal berlaku dalam keluarga mereka, bila ibu mereka datang untuk explain, Arabella terima. At least Lily still take time to accept her. It seems more logic to me. Okay, sambung ke buku kedua.
This historical romance was a good read, I was entertained throughout, Arabella was a strong passionate lady, protective of her heart and her siblings and challenges the charming, wicked Marcus.
One of my favourite parts was Arabella standing up to one of Marcus's family members and being true to herself and protecting her friends.
Rest of the story was entertaining and all that I want in a romance story, passion, interesting characters and good old love story.
A personagem principal feminina é a maior desilusão deste livro.
The three novels in the series of courtship wars were decent to read, but as far as i am concerned too modern for the regency era it portrayed. The way the sisters carried on specially the third one(lily!) with no consequences didn't bode well with me. I mean i understand their past and what have been they through but the way they were carrying on and stuff being friends with a cyprian(which again is plus point in their favour) plus inviting her to their functions (though very commendable), it's not done, none of this would have been acceptable. the easy way the sister's engaged in lovemaking, without anyone knowing about it, it wasn't tha easy. The way the third one staying in a boarding house and being friends with prostitutes and being adamant to be a mistress to the H, and how one benefactor paid 30 thousand pounds worth of gambling debt , are you kidding me does the author realise the amount value during that time and no one would do that for his/her paramour. The mother easily accepted back in society.(She would never have been, irrespective if your son in laws are powerful earl's or dukes or marquess. I mean there were many such instances which didn't work out for the era they were written about I really love it when author's do write steamy novels but when they are writing for certain time period i want them to stay true to the era and not add in modern ideologies in it, no way the sisters carried on would have been acceptable of their time period.
On to a another series, this time by Nicole Jordan. I've been reading her novels for years and they don't disappoint. This first book in the Courtship Wars is a fabulous start to this series with great passion, good side characters and that wonderful happy ending.
