Relationships are achingly complex, even more so when it’s a father and his accidental love child. Two strangers meet serendipitously. One is an irrepressible, mischievous brat and the other a brooding platitudinous bore. Their contrasting individual paths that portend a star-crossed disaster suddenly find a shared future. Fate brings them under the same roof, and soon, the insolent child’s wild, roller-coaster, mind-numbing life takes centre stage in a moody family’s wacky, dysfunctional abode. What follows is a fantastical journey, and that is putting it mildly. Enter an unexpected visitor, and soon their lives are completely disarranged. The vicissitudes of life are on full display as the father-son duo confront a new reality. The family struggles to grapple with the new power dynamic as circumstances start spiralling beyond everyone’s control, with grievous consequences. In this exceptional slice-of-life book, Sanjay Jha tells us a heart-rending account of love and loss, happiness and grief, regret and redemption. ‘Grief, once it checks in, is a permanent guest’, says the tiny protagonist. Is atonement and forgiveness at all possible, or is it just a desperate human urge for finding inner peace? Is time, eventually, the only true healer? Can we really move on? In My Illegitimate Son, Sanjay Jha narrates a stirringly poignant story, which has both riotous laughter and abundant sorrow, that might just find an echo with your own.
One of the most renowned authors Sanjay Jha has illustrated a relationship between a dog and its owner. This book is about emotions - happiness, affection, despair, and bonding. The quotes from this book are remarkable. Though this book begins with Amadeus, a German Shepherd, and the Jha family’s first pet, the Jha family introduces their pets Lousie, Olly, and Pablo.
This book stands with Lousie's various points of view towards the world. Louise, a jet-black mini Dachshund delivers a massive portrayal of its life - from his birth to his separation from his mother and then his meeting with Olly, his partner in crime. Somehow it's engrossing how a dog gives nicknames to his adopted family members.
It's interesting to notice how the transitions in a dog’s life can also affect a reader's mind. The last few pages of this book are quite emotional. Though the illustrations are very intriguing in this book, the words are difficult to understand. Otherwise, one should go for MY ILLEGITIMATE SON. On my side, this is a 4-star reading.
This book is a true story not just of the author, Sanjay Jha, but also of millions of dog parents around the world!
This is a unique and one of a kind story, which is narrated through the perspective of Louis, a Daschund, and the pet dog of the family. Its such an wholesome and real story, that its very difficult to explain it, you need to read it, to experience the joys and sadness associated with it.
Through Louis’s story, we get to read about his life and relationships with Missy, Mo, Beard and Big Mamma. Right from his adoption and sadness of being separated from his mom, to being an irreplaceable core member of the family with his friend Olly, Louis has just completed a circle. He even covers the smallest aspects of human life like WFH, going for walks, family vacations, youngsters being on mobiles all the time and the struggle during Covid in detail from a different perspective along with some humour.
If I have to sum up in one line, this book is about the journey of an unconditional love and unbreakable bond.
Do you ever imagine what it's like to know what your pet is thinking? This peculiar book follows the adventurous life of Louis, a mini Daschund ever since he was adopted by a lovely family from Mumbai. He narrated his life spanning throughout the years right from the time he was born and separated from his birth mother until he departed, right beside his adopted family. Amidst of it all, he shared how he was loved by everyone and his ever growing bonding with each member of the family upto the point that he changed their lives forever. But in this household, he also met another dog, named Olly, and soon enough Olly became his brother figure & soulmates till the very end. The main theme of this story is found family, friendship, dog's mental health loss and grief but most importantly forgiveness. For me it was an endearing read. This book is like a warm hug on a cold night. Let's not forget the beautiful adorable illustrations, that too in every page of the book. There were also sassy moments from Louis and his puns comments were so relatable and hilarious. How did he came up with those in the first place. Sometimes I wonder while reading this book, do dogs have thoughts like this too. I wish I know but , we can never. This story was so relatable, since I had gone through the grief period when my beloved Labrador died . The book tug all my heartstrings together. I really enjoyed reading it, but towards the ending that's where I started crying . So so emotional! Such a beautiful and poignant read that will find its way into your heart no matter what. A book I didn't know I needed until I read it and swallow it whole.
I remember myself reading many books based on politicians in forms of autobiographies and biographies but never expected or imagined a politician writing a fiction story. I am just done reading “My Illegitimate Son” written by the former National Spokesperson of the Congress party whom many of us have seen debating on news channels on prime time. This 184-pages book is published by Rupa publication in the month of May 2023 itself and this is the first review that is being posted on Amazon/Goodreads. I am glad to be one of the initial readers of this incredible story which has been written in the first voice of Louis, a pet dog in a house of a family living in Mumbai.
Well, this has been a unique attempt in writing a book from perspective of a pet animal. I was initially quite doubtful if author would be able to provide entertainment through the story - How many perspectives will he be able to convey through an animal? But Sanjay has dumped all such doubts of his readers by writing not only a story of how an animal enters a family and gets amused by the love and over-excitement of everyone but philosophical elements too. Author’s command on the language is obviously great as he is regularly involved in writing for newspapers and editorials. He has used some great vocabulary in few chapters which helped me learn many new words even after reading for so many years. He has not shied away from using words which helped define the situation or scenario best. This book should be picked considering that you’ll have to refer dictionary regularly hence you can choose to read it on Kindle as well making it easier for you.
The way bonding between 3 different dogs is shown along with their love-hate tales makes us think if they also process relationships similar to us. They also have all the good and bad emotions which makes them be good or nasty to others. The initial chapters were a delight to see how dogs feel when people arrive regularly and adopt couple of them making them leave their friends behind. They also sense how the prospective parents could be and accordingly show their excitement or treat them with complete ignorance so that they are rejected. There was a painful part in the beginning itself when a mother and son are about to be separated. This one paragraph itself gave me the sense about what kind of emotional roller-coaster ride this book is going to be.
The quote in the start of every chapter sets a realization tone for the reader as there is enough for you to introspect about your life. Sanjay has tried giving real life references through a dog’s perspective and you can find him taking dig at current government as well as few personalities from Indian politics. He also makes foreign references using many current affair topics. The illustrations are very beautiful which enables you to imagine the characters of pet animals. Jha has given his own reference through a character called Beard. It was fun reading those parts where Louis describes him.
As mentioned in the synopsis, the story is based on factors such as love, loss, happiness, grief, regret, redemption, life, death, ego, forgiveness, loyalty, acceptance, spirituality, violence, after-death etc. It answers many questions about the way we humans process our thoughts. It tells how complex we have made our world whereas it could be as easy as it is for the animal world. The pre-climax and climax made me emotional and I controlled my tears in contrast to all the chapters which otherwise made me laugh with funny take of the pet on the family he was adopted by. Sanjay has been immensely witty in this book. I never knew about Sanjay’s humor in both- straight and dark forms. Haha!
After reading this book, you will obviously start looking at animals in a very different light. You will understand that they are also processing some opinions about us. The pet lovers will be able to relate with all the tales. They’ll be extra-cautious to not be judged by their pet after keeping this book down. Haha! Overall, it’s a great attempt and something very fresh in the new arrivals. I give this book 4.25 stars out of 5.
‘Grief, once it checks in, is a permanent guest’. What a line from the book. 💐 The Author tells us a heart-rending account of love and loss, happiness and grief, regret and redemption. The story is about a dog named Louis. Louis is a Dachshund dog. The story is narrated in his own view about how his parents met, mated and produced 6 babies. Also the story narrates how he was adopted by the jha family.
Highlights -
1) The author narrates a stirringly poignant story, which has both laughter & sorrow, that might just find an echo with your own.
2) The quote at the start of every chapter adds an additional advantage for the reader.
3) The author has tried giving real life references through a dog’s perspective and you can also find him taking a toll on the current government and personalities.
4) Illustrations in the book will help you visualize things and your love for dogs will increase more.
5) The way the bond between 3 different dogs is shown along with their love-hate relationship makes us think of the same relationship which humans share among them.
6) Each chapter describes how louis life progressed with the Jha family. I liked the relationship described between louis and Oly and how he got confronted by her.
7) All the Animal lovers will definitely enjoy this more as they can relate it.
My illegitimate son by Sanjay Jha is a humourous yet emotional story that he shares through his dog Louis. Sanjay Jha shares the love and Louis childhood who is ....wait for it... the narrator and who along with the others in the book brings life into the book. Throughout the novel, you will notice the anecdotes that the author wanted to share and the difficult circumstances and the feelings of loss that made us feel the raw emotions through Louis' voice.
The author also take several jibes at the societal structures but also bring in the tough times which brought people together. If you have ever lived with a pet or are still living you will certainly have some tears falling down your cheek.
The honesty of the dog's voice and the brashness of the entire family, situations which we several times don't address is where Louis comes as someone who can see the world in the smart aleck way and gives the author the chance to share his unfiltered life.
The book starts with Amadeus and ends with Louis who brought joy, mess, laughter and the most amazing part about this book remains are Louis thoughts about everyone.
I definitely recommend this book. A universal book that should be picked up by everyone to go on an emotional ride.

'If I had to live my life again, I'd make the same mistakes, only sooner.' - Tallulah Bankhead
~ Louis, a little hero with a big heart, recounts his action and teaches us the best life lessons and morality one should hold to lead a happy life.
~ Louis explains the most amazing values of life. I totally loved the beautiful hardcover of this book. The book is written in a simple Language yet it proves to be a thought provoking read.
~ I was amazed how a dog shows its emotions and feelings the same way as a human being. The beautiful illustrations are so adorable.
~ The story was different. Every ill habits of human beings are satirised. How one wastes the resources or their living style. There was a line where a dog said that there is no comparison between the productivity capacity of a human being and dogs.I laughed a lot. Ironically, Louis proved dogs hold value in a way of human beings.
~ This was an interesting and mood changing book. It's a light read and proves the love of the author for his dog/illegitimate Son Louis.
~ Dog owners usually love their pets as family members. This was proof of the same.
~ I highly recommend this book to pet/ dog owners.
The story was a heartwarming tale about the arrival of a mini-dachshund, named Louis into a human family.
Louis shares his experiences of living with his human family in a funny way and I loved how he shared his thoughts. The moments that he shared with his family and another dog Olly was full of warmth. Even after reading this story, Louis will stay in the reader's minds forever.
The book was excellently written and I loved it. The writing style deserves special mention as it was easy to read as well as funny. The story was also accompanied by cute illustrations that just made me love this book more.
The story dealt with themes like love, friendship, family, and loss. The story was so excellently written that the readers are able to feel the exact emotion.
This book was such a unique literary experience! It's wholesome and heartwarming and witty and funny but it's also sad and poignant and heart-wrenching and gloomy. The story is told from the perspective of Jha's beloved pet, Louis, a dachshund and is an account of Louis's life with Jha family. It offers a touching and insightful glimpse into the intricate world of humans through the lens of a canine. I was laughing out loud at some of Louis's remarks and some parts had me sobbing so hard that I had to take a break from reading and pick up another book.
One of the standout features of this book is the inclusion of lovely illustrations. Bhavya has done a really good job in bringing these characters out through her art work. They are so beautiful and complement the story perfectly and made me feel more connected to the characters and their emotions. The combination of the heartfelt narrative and beautiful illustrations makes this book a must read for anyone seeking a touching and refreshing read.
Sanjay Jha, the former national spokesperson of the Indian National Congress and Executive Director of Dale Carnegie, India, had his literary debut in the form of 11: Triumphs, Trials, Turbulence (2010), a critical glimpse into the world of cricket. In 2013, he co-authored The Superstar Syndrome: The Making of a Champion (2013) with Myra S. White, establishing himself in the self-help genre and proving his value as part of Dale Carnegie, India. His most recent work of non-fictional writing, The Great Unravelling: India after 2014 (2020) provides a candid view of Modi's India.
Known for his aforementioned political insights and self-help contributions, Jha now steps into the world of emotion, love, and grief in a touching account that revolves around his pet dog, Louise Jha. Jha makes an unexpected yet captivating addition to the world of 'dog stories’ through My Illegitimate Son (2023). It is almost a biographical account, except that Louise's view of the world is mostly imaginary.
The book has shades of Jack London's The Call of the Wild, and much like the emotional connection in John Grogan's Marley & Me, My Illegitimate Son captures the essence of dog companionship. Being quite fond of 'dog tales', with some of my favourite representations of dogs, both literary and filmic, in Twain's A Dog's Tale, Dicken's Old Curiosity Shop, "Hachikō Monogatari", Disney's "Lady and the Tramp", "Oliver & Company", "Bolt", Pixar's "Up", Wes Anderson's "Isle of Dogs", and the list goes on. Heck, I even have a soft spot for Sif from the “Dark Souls” franchise and Alice from “The Last of Us II”, among others. “My Illegitimate Son” makes a valuable addition to this category, following an Eliot-esque ideological path.
With the majority of my life (thirteen out of my life of twenty-three years) spent in the company of canine friends, I have a soft spot for anything and everything about dogs. That adds a relatability factor to readers with similar lived experiences.
The language of Jha's fiction took me by surprise; all my preconceptions were shattered by the time I finished the introduction. His realistic portrayal of the intertwined lives of humans and dogs masterfully addresses the complex questions of life, death, and grief, and at the same time, portrays them in new light. The underlying theme of affection as a crucial part of a fulfilled life adds a thought-provoking layer to the story, all while ensuring entertainment remains at the forefront—a true writing feat.
What sets My Illegitimate Son apart is its thought-provoking exploration of family dynamics in the modern, post-humanist age. It challenges the very notion of "illegitimacy" when applied to a loyal canine companion, potentially sparking discussions about the role of non-human animals in an anthropocentric world. The book capitalizes on the intriguing reality that we can never fully comprehend the thoughts of our beastly companions. It cleverly exploits this fact to forge a unique attachment to Louise within readers, inviting us to further ponder the complexities of our bonds with non-human creatures.
The inclusion of Bhavya's illustrations enhances the immersive experience, appealing to multiple senses and adding a layer of depth to the narrative. However, I must mention a significant downside: the editing and punctuation in the book often appear somewhat lazy, which, while not entirely detrimental, does disrupt the flow.
In summary, My Illegitimate Son is a delightful departure from Jha's previous works, presenting a beautifully written and emotionally engaging tale that celebrates the bond between humans and dogs. Despite the occasional editorial misstep, the book's exploration of life, family, and affection is commendable. An unexpected treasure, especially for those who hold a special place in their hearts for their furry companions.
"My Illegitimate Son" is a heartwarming and enchanting tale narrated from the unique perspective of a lovable canine protagonist, Louis Jha. Written by Sanjay Jha, this charming story takes readers on a journey through the eyes, ears, and nose of a little, cute dog who experiences a remarkable adventure.
From the very first page, readers are captivated by the authentic voice of our furry narrator. The story begins with how the dog entered the author's life and became an integral part of it. The dog's innocence, sincerity, and unwavering loyalty shine through in every word, creating an emotional bond between the reader and the narrator. It is impossible not to be moved by the dog's perspective on life, love, and the world.
The story showcases the strong bond between the dog and its human companion as they navigate life's ups and downs together. Through it all, the dog's unwavering devotion and undying love for its human are palpable, tugging at the heartstrings of readers.
What sets this book apart is its ability to seamlessly weave together heartwarming and thrilling moments. While some chapters are filled with playful antics and heartwarming scenes of companionship, others are fraught with humor and fun, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The balance between these emotions allows the story to remain engaging and captivating throughout.
The narrative is exceptionally well-paced, keeping readers immersed in the dog's world without ever feeling rushed or dragged. The author effortlessly captures the natural curiosity and wonder that dogs experience, whether they are exploring a new city or engaging with different human characters. The descriptions are vivid, enabling readers to imagine the sights, sounds, and smells encountered by the dog vividly.
Moreover, this story touches on several themes that resonate with readers of all ages. Themes such as friendship, loyalty, and the importance of being true to oneself are beautifully explored throughout the story. The dog's perspective serves as a reminder of the unconditional love and joy that animals can bring to our lives, prompting readers to reflect on their own relationships with their pets.
In conclusion, "My Illegitimate Son: A True Story" is an absolutely delightful read for anyone who appreciates heartwarming tales. Through the eyes of an endearing narrator, this book offers a unique perspective that will leave readers with a newfound appreciation for our canine companions. It is a journey filled with laughter, tears, and plenty of tail-wagging moments that will stay with readers long after they turn the last page. The end of the story is very emotional and deeply moving.
"There are two ways to live. You can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle." - Albert Einstein.
A must-read for all the pet lovers who treat their pets as family.
I hope the times have been good for you. I would ask your forgiveness for not being present in your life enough. However, I would try my best to keep up with this beautiful friendship and needless to say, I feel good to be your friend. So, please bear with me. Talking of friendships, I would like to tell you what has been going around my mind while I have been traversing a few lengths of this life. I have been thinking of my furry friends, the ones dear departed and the ones who are accompanying me while I make sense of this life I have been given. Ah! I must tell you. All these emotions and memories were invoked by my action of reading a book named ‘My Illegitimate Son’ by Sanjhay Jha. No, no my friend, this is not a non-fictional account of someone’s literal illegitimate son so to speak. It speaks of the sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters we gain from kindling relationships with our furry companions. Do not be misled by the title. It will all make sense in due time. This book introduced me to four cuddly furry babies - Oliver (AKA Olly), Amadeus, Louis and Pablo and their excellent and a bit eccentric family of four - Big Mama, Bear, Missy, and Mo. Our fabulous hero and narrator Olly, a chivalrous and dashing Dachshund, introduces their roller-coaster life and their journey which is part bitter-sweet and part hilarious, successfully provoking intense longing for my furry babies whom I have lost over the years and conveying my love to the ones who are there to assist me currently. While reading, some parts of the narrative became more than I could chew because I was wondering how a dog can be so worldly-wise when it comes to current affairs, designer bags, politics, and more. I did not hope to come across such a variety of mambo-jumb0, given that it came from a dog which felt a tad bit unrealistic but I enjoyed them.
Apart from this, I loved what the book had to give me. I witnessed Olly’s journey from a baby to an aged furry baby and through his lens, the portrait of his lovely family. I met Amadeus, Louis and even the cantankerous and trauma-triggered but otherwise, sweet baby Pablo, who’s a rescued furry being.
I believe, my friend, you have come across such furry babies, looking at them with loving eyes or maybe wondering what life they endure, the ones who are pampered and the ones who are left to live the hard life out on the roads and my friend if you have done that and wondered about them, you must read this book. It is a slice-of-life book that you must not give a miss.
This book made me ache for the ones I have lost, my beautiful furry angels, who have witnessed my sorrow, my happiness and my living and I am sure it will make you remember and cherish yours, the ones you have lived with and loved with. I look more at all the furry babies I can lay my eyes upon and smile at them, trying to be kind and that has made all the difference.
"Happiness was but an occasional episode in a general drama of pain" - Thomas Hardy. This ultimatum revelation of reality has been encountered by every single human being in their lifetimes. But emphasizing more on the superiority of race often makes us forget about the subordinate races and their agonizing thrive in life. The pets of the home are supposed to be the most sensitive and philanthropic members of the household. But merely their struggle for adaptation to changing circumstances is given any heed. The celebrated writer Sanjay Jha has interpreted his magnum opus 𝘔𝘺 𝘐𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘯 from the volatile perspective of a pet animal (dog). The reformation and metamorphosis of versatile stages of life have been well delineated from his(dog's) perspective. A jet-black miniature dachshund Louis was adopted by the Jha family which is comprised of the Author Beard, his two daughters Mo and Missy, and his wife Big Mama. Apart from the human peers Louis's constant companion Olly, a white Lhasa Apso is an inseparable fragment of his life. Louis has minutely articulated his furnished childhood, his sweet little mischievous acts, the immediate forgiveness on his foster family's behalf, his transcendentalist trances in the vastness of the horizon, and so on. But the scenario is changed as soon as the family adopts an Indie, Pablo. Here Jha almost transcends Louis to the pedestal of a human being by accelerating and bestowing him with the "human status". The inner catapult of Louis, his pain, grief, redemption, and crisis assemble to that first child of the family who fails to accept the shift of attention to his/her newly born sibling. But irrespective of Louis's inexplicable attempt to embrace Pablo he has been deceptive of Louis and Olly and brutally attacks them from time to time. This has resulted in the severe injury of Olly and his condition becomes precarious and the fog of gloom descends upon the family. Here Louis like a human child withstands his maturity and forgetting about his well-being, broods over the recuperation of his brother's health condition. Thus his deteriorating mental stability kind of assembles to Franz Kafka's 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴. To conclude the story Jha implies his masterstroke by noting down Louis's roller coaster of emotions through his letters to the family. How a child feels when he witnesses a dysfunctional family correspondence and how inequality and ill-treatment impact the child's psyche make the readers feel loathsome and infuse a stinging pain in their hearts and also pave the way for introspection. Therefore the story, its protagonist, its viewpoint, and the theme all prove to be sporadic and exceptional in its representation. Therefore it should be one of the top priorities in any avid reader or bibliophile's wish list!
Book : My illegitimate son: A true story Author: Sanjay Jha Publisher: Rupa Publications (2023) Illustration: Bhavya I have been gifted this book in exchange for an honest review. Synopsis: Louis, a mini dacshund with a crooked tail is adopted into a loveable human family. This is a story of the human animal equation from a pet's perspective. Review: My illegitimate son is an ode to a man's pet dog, Louis. As Louis, the brave, big hearted and loyal canine narrates his story, we get to see the poignant human animal relationship, the love in the eyes of his feral mates and a hint of what could the animal problems be.The canine's perspective on human emotions and behaviour and even opinions on the current political scenario are shed light upon with humour. What I loved about the book is that all the animal characters have been given a unique personality and dealt with equal importance as the humans. Pablo, the aggressive canine and his story is something worth pondering on. Olly, the Lhasa po dog will find a place in our heart, but his story could have had been better elaborated. The prose has played an important role in creating this literary gem. The author has a distinctive writing style with sophisticated english and Thesaurus like abstruse phrases. I believe this could be gifted to people who would love to enrich their vocabulary. The narration has a distinctive nature too. It gets cool and funky as the narrator changes from the serious and boring human, Beard ; to the flamboyant dog, Louis. The characters in the human family are so adorable, that the warmth of their hearts shine like bright flames , even in the darkest of times. The illustrations in the story are beautiful and aids in enhancing the reading experience. This story of Louis is one of love and loss, compassion, companionship, loyalty and most importantly forgiveness. The quite often forgotten discussion on mental health in animals was hinted at; which is praiseworthy. What could have had been better: Though the author has managed to weave a lovely memoir for Louis, I did feel that it lacked the depth/soul akin to stories like Hatchiko, which would always remain etched in our memories. Something else that left a bad taste in my mouth, was the way in which something as serious as #black lives matter was used for pun, simply because of the pet's colour. It needs to be handled more sensitively. Ultimately, I would recommend this book to any petlover and most importantly those craving for a story with hope. Trigger warning: death , mental health, dealing with loss . Rating:3.7/5

When I got this book, I was anticipating a child from a wedlock who returns into the life of his biological father after maybe losing his mother. The blurb did not give anything away. If I had the least idea about the content, I would have kept a box of tissues ready. So, statutory warning- if you are a pet parent or a dog lover then be prepared to see your entire life, film in front of your eyes. The book begins with a prologue & the prologue itself brought huge tear to my eyes. The writing style takes few pages to get a knack of. The vocabulary & writing is top notch & adds to your dictionary. The narrative is very descriptive & to add to it there are perfect illustrations peppered throughout the book. I could have gauged the book on the basis of the illustrations alone, they are so good. It felt like someone had penned down my story. I believe it was the writer's medium to heal, to let go off the load he was carrying on his heart, to grieve & share. I have had a fur baby almost all through my life, at every stage he was there to comfort me, love me unconditionally & just be there. Staring with Skinny, we had Tiger & Jackie together, then Badshah. After Badshah, mom swore never to get a pet again because of the pain of loss we have to bear as pet parents. But I insisted on getting a fur baby as my birthday gift & eventually my brother got me a German Shepherd. AMADEUS reminded me of him. After the prologue, the story begins with chapter zero. One, two and then three dogs enter the scene & PABLO, reminded me of humans nowadays, always angry, frustrated & insecure, ready to pounce but at the same time LOUIS reminds us to be forgiving, be secure in your being & to be kind. Anger destroys relationships and giveS regret and nothing else. Also like Louise said, I believe our fur baby crosses the rainbow to come back, pretty soon. The section on what happens over the rainbow bridge was really nice & imaginative. My favorite section was the letters for Big mama, Beard, the kiddos & even Pablo. The Epilogue gave me something to hold on to. The biggest fear of any pet parent is the thought of losing your fur baby as they have a shorter life span than us. The book's narrative is witty & hilarious & reading Louis Pov was a welcome deal. I haven't read a book with a dog for the longest time that I can remember although I have a bunch on my shelf, for fear of crying my eyes sore but this one caught me unaware, still I am glad I read it. It's going to shine in my treasure chest. Totally recommend.

What Makes This Book Different:
Dog's Perspective: The book's unique narrative perspective, telling the story from a dog's point of view, sets it apart. It offers a fresh and whimsical exploration of human experiences, making even the ordinary aspects of life extraordinary.
Deep Emotional Connection: The book goes beyond being a pet-centric story; it forges a deep emotional connection between the reader and the characters. Louis becomes more than a fictional dog, becoming a cherished literary companion whose emotions resonate profoundly.
A Celebration of Human-Canine Bond: The book beautifully celebrates the bond between humans and their four-legged friends. It highlights the simplicity and depth of this connection, making it a compelling and enriching read for pet lovers and those considering bringing a furry friend into their lives.
Who should read it: Those who enjoyed watching Stuart Little movies should definitely read this, apart from that I think anyone who's looking to get a new perspective of life should read this book.
‘My Illegitimate Son’ is a tale narrated from the perspective of a pet Dachshund named Louis, who definitely has a lot to say about his ‘pawrents’ and the family that he lives with. Louis describes the events of his adoption, the tough goodbyes he had had to say at a young age, and introduces us to his new family members, and the way everything works in their home. His discovery of Olly at his new home and getting to know him was really fun to read about. Reading the book was like listening to a human being’s account of his everyday life, except that it was definitely said from a dog’s perspective who finds it difficult to comprehend the meanings behind each and every human action, but still finds them amusing; maybe even annoying at times. The details make it seem like Louis was being brought up in a typical Indian home, which made his accountings even more relatable and enjoyable to me. I loved the part where he describes his experiences with a particular dog-sitter, who wasn’t the most efficient at his job. The themes of love, acceptance and friendship have been bold throughout Louis’s experiences. To me, Louis and Olly have been as lovable as any other pup in real life would be; they had taken up a piece of my heart right from the start.
It has been a wholesome experience reading this book. The quote ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ stands very true for this book .After seeing the cover, I had felt it would be like just another story by a human being about a pet. I was so wrong! I had so much fun reading this book, which I absolutely hadn’t expected from it. It was so easy to breeze through it. The author’s writing is apt for this kind of a piece; the ability to make even a mundane human thing amusing from a dog’s point of view is commendable. The language could’ve possibly been a bit simpler for readers who are not well-versed in English; but I loved the book the way it is, imagining a small Dachshund spewing heavy words in English was hilarious! There are adorable illustrations scattered all throughout the book, which enhances the experience of reading so much more. They are so cute, I ended up not annotating this book, I just let the book be in its rawest glory. If you’re curious about this book, you should definitely pick it up, it’s so worth the time spent on it. Louis, his friends and his amusing yet valuable tales will not disappoint at all!
Hey, Goodreads Family, Time for another BOOK REVIEW!
My Illegitimate Son Author: Sanjay Jha Rating: ⭐⭐⭐️ Genre: Fiction Recommendation: Go for this if you have pets or you just connect well with dogs.
🐕 Do you have pets? Especially a dog? Let me guess, you definitely love your pet dog more than anyone else. And this is the kind of story you'll love more than anything else.
We always think about how animals would be living their life. My Illegitimate Son beautifully depicts the thoughts of a dog about humans, current affairs, etc.
🐕 The story begins with the birth of a Dachshund with a crooked tail - pointed at the end. He's adopted by a family because of his tail and named Louis. The story is narrated by Louis. He meets couple of his friends or lets say brothers named Olly and Pablo, in the later stage and starts with his beautiful life.
The opinions of Louis towards humans, this world and things happening around here is quite humorous. There are lots of quotables. The characters are so apt, the description of Missy and Mo the sisters who adopted Louis with their father, Louis calls him 'Beard' because of his personality.
🐕 The story is beautifully written, the humor it has makes it so flawless to read. The simple writing and short chapters are like cherry on the top.I found the writing a bit cringe in the initial phase but later it held to its positives. The illustrations it has helps to imagine and connect with the story so well.
The writing is simple, but at times there are heavy words used which could've been avoided to maintain the simplicity in the writing intact. I personally feel the character of Pablo was not justified well, what's disturbing Pablo, what does he do what he does was difficult to digest, there could've been a stronger backing for the same. The character of Pablo should've been with more description as he was the one because of which Louis could write this letter. If Pablo wouldn't have acted in that manner, we could not have got such a beautiful letter by Louis. I loved how the ending was properly drafted, a perfect thought to end like this I must say. Yeah, the ending is emotional.
The life of Louis is interesting, the worse days he faced when his loved ones died, the period of COVID-19, how did he survived, is so beautifully plotted. You have to read this if you want to know more about the life of Louis and experience this humorous , touching, and tender story.
In the compelling book "My Illegitimate Son," the author dives into the difficulties of love, respect, and vulnerability. Despite its deceptive title, the 200-page book develops as a moving examination of an unusual relationship between a father and his kid who is not biologically his. The book has 16 thought-provoking chapters, and the first one, "Chapter Zero," hooks readers in with an interesting turn.
With his real and emotive storytelling, author Sanjay Jha expertly engages us in his journey while evoking emotions ranging from joy to sadness. He urges readers to reflect on their preconceived notions of family, morality, and acceptance by revealing his flaws in a reflective and open-minded manner via his story. Not to forget Bhavya's illustrations, which powerfully and significantly affect the telling of the narrative. Honestly, I only knew Jha as a politician who rose to prominence for his involvement in contentious televised discussions where he bravely voiced his beliefs in the face of scorn and constant criticism. However, it is surprising to realise how talented a storyteller he is after reading this book. I've never read his earlier work, but I'd like to now.
The author's ability to create real, complex people makes this biography strong. The main character's son of the main character is given a complex portrayal as he struggles with issues of identification and the yearning for belonging that we all share. The development of the father-son bond permanently changes the reader's heart. The tale is also made richer by the supporting cast of friends, relatives, and well-wishers, who capture the intricacies of interpersonal relationships. Intimate moments of a father-son interaction are transported to the busy streets of Mumbai by Sanjay Jha's brilliant descriptions. Suspense and reflection are easily incorporated into the well-balanced tempo to keep readers interested. The author's trip is the primary subject of the novel, but it also touches on more general issues, including societal perceptions and the difficulties people who defy accepted conventions encounter.
The author urges readers to face their prejudices and re-examine their ideas through his gripping narrative. "My Illegitimate Son" is a powerful and easy book that deftly captures the subtleties of human emotions. It is a must-read for anybody looking for a stimulating examination of unusual ties and the power of vulnerability.
Book Name: My Illegitimate Son – A true story Author: Sanjay Jha Genre: Heartwarming love
The title of the book looks a bit tricky, but after reading the book, it makes sense. The main protagonist of the book is a black dachshund called Louis by his big mama. The story is entirely narrated by Louis. Initially, it covers a brief intro about a dog called Amadeus (a German shepherd). It tells about his day-to-day life and his regular routine. After some years, he was affected by a non-curable illness and lost his life.
In general, we people are not ready to accept the loss of our beloved ones. We became stuck and buried ourselves in deep grief after they died, whether it was a pet or a human. To overcome the loss is not an easy task, and as time passes, we are forced to smile and lead our lives with memories of them.
This book made me feel that even pets (dogs) feel the same way as humans do. They, too, get hurt, jealous, happy, sad, and even worry about the loss.
Louis was born with five siblings; each of them got adopted, and he was the only one left out because his tail is different and unique. After some days, he was finally chosen by a family (two girls and a father) and taken care of with lots of affection. He started living with his cute sisters, Mo and Missy. He also loves his beard (father) and mama very much. As days passed, Missy brought another dog (Olly) home. Initially, Louis and Olly had conflicts with each other, but slowly, they learned about each other.
Louis shares each piece of information about his family, what he likes the most, and how he got pampered. I really loved the part when Louis narrates the battle fought by Olly and how much he misses him. He also made so many efforts to please the family and help them overcome the loss. Also, he fought his illness and bounced back with huge power for the sake of his family.
I really loved every chapter of the book, and all I felt was warmth and love throughout. I really wanted to adopt a pet like Louis, who loves me unconditionally without any expectation. Illustrations shared in the chapters add extra cuteness to the book. It is a must-read for all pet lovers and can be completed in a single sitting.
🐾This book encapsulates the journey of Louis Jha, our adorable protagonist who is a dog of the Dachshund breed. The story starts with a brief description of Amadeus, a German shepherd with large brown eyes that spoke a million nuances with long lingering stare and the void and pain that he left with his death after twelve and half years then came Louis, a bundle of Joy in the house of Missy and Mo. This book is narrated by Louis and showcases the world through his eyes that comes with satirical remarks, goofy as well as thoughtful comments and lots of unconditional love ☁️
🐾This book was a rollercoaster ride that will make you cry sometime from laughter sometimes with grief. Louis talks about his life right from his birth, adoption, growing up in his new family along with all their humdrums, the goodbyes that came along, his hospital visits and ultimately a heavy hearted departure of his. Oh by the way Louis was not the only bundle of joy in the house, we also have Olly, of the lhasa Apso breed and Pablo, an indie who was saved by Missy. We get to see their bonding, love along with bonding with the family the happy as well as sad moments and the most unique thing of all is our narrator Louis, the aspect of reading a book through the eyes of a dog was an unique experience for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it ☁️
🐾This book totally captured my heart from the beginning; mostly when I re-read books I only read my favourite parts of the book and there are very few books that I tend to re-read from cover to cover and honestly I know this book is going to be one of them that I will revisit again and again even when it will make me cry. ☁️
🐾Each chapter of the book starts with a quote and comes along with beautiful illustrations which I found very endearing and intimately beautiful. The writing style was easy yet profound with fast paced narration that will efficiently capture the hearts of the readers. The only con of the book that I personally felt was that the title could have been better. I definitely recommend this book to everyone; so grab your tissues and dive into this beautiful story that will remain emotionally engraved in your hearts ☁️ --4.8/5🌟-- __________x__________
My Illegitimate Son by Sanjay Jha is an emotional roller-coaster of a read which revolves around the relationship between pets and their human family. The cover of the book and the title had me hooked and I couldn’t resist myself. The author being a well-known public figure sealed the deal and I am glad that I got this book. I don’t have enough words to praise it, but I shall try. Right from the start we get to know about Louis and his origin story. How Louis became part of the Beard family is a charming story itself. The story is told by Louis and it makes the book more special as the readers can see the world from the perspective of the pet. How they feel, how they love and care, their grief, their joys, etc. has been expertly presented throughout the book. We witness many events and ups and downs in the life of Beard, his family, Louis, and other pets. The friendship between Louis and Olly is remarkable and it was one of my favourites. Readers will be able to relate easily to the story and the feelings of the pets and their human families. There are a lot of moments of joy and exhilaration but just like life, there are moments of sadness, darkness, and grief. Throughout the narrative, we can see the witty side of Sanjayji as the book has a ton of humour. Lastly, the way he has written the last part of the book where Louis writes a letter to all the members of the household, is something extraordinary and intense. The book shows that he has an extraordinary mind and superlative storytelling skills. I was positively surprised to see the eloquence, openness, and courage to appear vulnerable by narrating a very personal story. Kudos to him, Louis who was a hero to their family will now be a national hero! To know how Beard’s life got better with Louis and other companions and how Louis fared in that household, you will have to read this heart-warming and heart-rending story. Louis and the story will remain with me for a very long time. Don’t miss this one, this is something which must be read. It is a different kind of love story and you would want to be part of it. So, go read it and experience it for yourself.
Pets are not just pets. They become the centre of our lives. Having a pet brings so much joy and adventure to life. This is the story of a miniature dachshund named Louis. One of his unique features is his crooked tail. He narrates his life journey from his birth in an earthly abode to his heavenly abode. I do not remember which was the last book that made me feel both happy and sad at the same time. How beautifully written this book is! I've felt every single emotion our beloved Louis Jha has honed through. His bonding with his best friend Ol and every family member is extremely enchanting.
Sanjay Jha has penned a truly enchanting literary masterpiece. The tale of Louis will linger with me forever. Although several days have passed since I turned the final page, the charm, the innocence, and the mischievousness of Louis and Ol continue to play before my eyes. It has permanently etched its mark and acquired a special place in my heart. The illustrations drawn by Bhavya within the pages of the book breathed life into the narrative, and their creativity captured the essence of the story's soul. I'll definitely re-read it at some point in my life, probably in my old age, when I'll be sitting on a chair in my home garden with one hand holding this book and the other caressing my dog's head.
Conclusively!! My Illegitimate Son is a tear-stained tale that effectively tugs at the heartstrings and at the same time makes your heart sing out loud as love, care, humour, sorrow, tears, friendship, and every other emotion take you on a sure-shot rollercoaster ride. So all bibliophiles out there, hold on to your hearts and heads as you become the witnesses of one of the most beautiful books ever written, but be sure to keep the tissues at hand while you are at it.
Book: My Illegitimate Son Author: Sanjay Jha Pages: 184 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have we ever thought about how much we ignore the pain of dumb animals in our selfishness? We don't even notice their sufferings. Why do we forget that they are also living beings? Even if they can't express their emotions in words like us, doesn't mean they don't have feelings. It doesn't mean that we have the right to control their life. They also have their own lives, have their families like ours.
The true life story of the Author and his own pet dog who was indeed his illegitimate son, Louis. Okay!! If you are thinking the story is all about pet dogs which will tell you how to take care of them, then you might be wrong somewhere. The story is much more than that which leaves a deep long lasting impact on our heart.
The main theme of the story is grief, losing your beloved and finding the way to be loved.
The best and unique thing about the book:
The narrative is written from the perspective of Louis, who was adopted by the author's family, covering from starting to ending of that journey. The ability to make even a mundane human thing amusing from a dog’s point of view is commendable. Louis narrates his own story in a very detailed manner about all the things he experienced in his life and afterlife too with his words of wisdom in between, how he felt when one day he got separated from his family.
Somewhere after reading this story, I felt the true emotions of those dumb animals. It tells how complex we have made our world whereas it could be as easy as it is for the animal world. Ending was so emotional that it will definitely find its way into your heart no matter what.
The language is not beginners friendly as it's a bit complex. The language could’ve possibly been a bit simpler for readers who are not well-versed in English. But it's okay as long as it's an interesting read which will connect your exact dots of emotion. The illustrated pictures of cute dogs add more emotion to the story.
Definitely give it a shot if you are ready for the rollercoaster ride of true emotions!!
"My Illegitimate Son: A True Story" by Sanjay Jha is a novel that offers a charming and unique perspective, narrated by none other than a pet dog named Louis. From the beginning, it's evident that the author has expertly captured the voice and mindset of a canine, making for a heartwarming and occasionally hilarious read.
Through Louis's lens, the novel weaves a tale that transcends its lighthearted tone. It delves into themes of love, loss, and redemption, allowing readers to experience a range of emotions while following Louis's adventures and interactions with humans. Jha's ability to infuse humor into Louis's observations on human behavior is commendable, offering both comic relief and insightful reflections on the world around him.
The characters in the story are well-crafted, exhibiting a level of depth that adds authenticity to the narrative. The relationships between characters are intricate and captivating, revealing the complexities of human connections through Louis's watchful eyes. The novel seamlessly blends heartwarming moments with more somber themes, particularly addressing grief and death. Jha handles these sensitive topics with care, providing readers with an opportunity for reflection and emotional engagement.
On the positive side, I found the unique perspective of Louis to be the novel's standout feature. His witty commentary and keen observations provide a fresh take on familiar situations. Additionally, the well-developed characters and their relationships contribute to the novel's overall depth.
However, I must admit that the ending felt slightly rushed, and a few philosophical passages seemed a touch heavy-handed. Despite these minor concerns, "My Illegitimate Son" remains an enchanting and thought-provoking read.
In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed "My Illegitimate Son: A True Story." It offers a delightful blend of humor, introspection, and genuine emotion through the lens of a lovable and insightful pet. Whether you're a dog lover or simply someone who appreciates a well-crafted story, this novel is a delightful choice that lingers in your thoughts long after the final page.

🐾"I still have not understood why many name us dogs as Tigers! Try calling the Lion King 'Tommy' and see what it does to you"- says the fluffy protagonist. He compares himself with the humans in a puerile and twee manner and opines that both dogs and humans read the same romantic 'How To' manuals for dummies. Or a 'How To Hook Up' on a dating app. His witty and jovial sense of humour forged in a childish frame ought to make you roll on the floor laughing.
🐾This is extremely refreshing to learn that this novel is jotted from a "pet's" perspective. It encapsulates a trail of emotions moving along the crooken lanes of emotional metamorphosis. The protagonist- Louis, a mini dachshund is a dynamic and beautiful dog housed with the Jha family. He was born in a house where his mum was already a pet, thus becoming an intimately connected member of the family.
🐾 Louis also gave different nicknames to his family members and cherished them in a plethora of ways. He also has a piquant partner in crime Christened as 'Olly'. The author has beautifully transversed a variety of sentiments and inclinations as an attribute of both humans and their pets.
🐾 Being a part of a disarranged reality, author celebrated and roistered the probity of the dog who possessed unparalleled qualities of loyalty, unconditional love, friendship and most crucially 'The Power of forgiveness '.
🐾 A special mention to @desaibhavya for such beautiful illustrations which makes it so much more engaging and pleasing.
🐾 The bitter sweet ending of the story does levy a deep emotional impact on the readers and it's very hard to move on from the variety of emotions which explodes in the end! This book is a package of comedy, love, tragedies, happiness and what not??!!!
🐾 In the "Rat race" of life, we might forget the 'animals' who co exist with us, but the way they perceive us and the world....is a lot more beautiful it seems. It's extreme tough to tap the mental quotient of the pets, but the efforts put forth by Mr. Jha in this book is beyond amazing. I'm absolutely awestruck!!!
"Remember, anger destroys relationships, and all we can do is regret thereafter. But the damage is done. Words are like toothpaste, once out of tube, it cannot be put back."
Dogs : They are the most faithful animals in the whole world whom some humans adore and pet while some humans fear and run away from them. The book, "My Illegitimate Son" written by Sanjay Jha is a true life story of his own pet dog who was indeed his illegitimate son, Louis. Louis was a mini Dachshund with a jet black body and a twisted tail. He looked no less than a hero and was indeed a brave one. A fighter! 🥺💕✨
As we move through the chapters we find, Louis narrating his own story about how his mother Lucy and father Charlie met and then how Charlie left his mother and how one day he got separated from his family.Though he got separated from his own blood mother but he found a human mother who was as warm and as comforting as Lucy.✨
He got a loving family where his human father Beard, two beautiful human sisters Missy and Mo, and human mother Big Mama along with his best friend,Olly,a Lhasa Apso spoiled him with lots of love, affection and attention.🥰Louis goes on narrating about all the things he experienced in his life and afterlife too with his words of wisdom in between.
Honestly, I am totally in love with Louis, his life, his experiences and this book of course! ❤️ The way Louis dealt with the difficulties that he encountered, it really inspired me, motivated me. A lot of lines in the book were very empowering, resonating, overwhelming and emotional. I was laughing at the beginning and was in tears at the end.😭Such a wholesome story, Louis. "I know how much all of you have cried in your private moments, each one trying to be brave for the other. And yet we heal with time, with beautiful memories that remain etched forever in our hearts."
My illegitimate son by Sanjay jha is a warm and heart touching read that beautifully delves into the footsteps of Sanjay's adorable pet dog 'Louis Jha'. Starting from the Introduction of Louis's Parents, this book thereafter follows his story of love, Affection, Courage and forgetness. The story takes the readers into a home where Louis is welcomed by its family members including Beard, Big Mama, mo, Missy and of course the most cutest olly(pet dog). This book is a light read that presents a refreshing perspective in front of its readers and takes them into the adventurous journey of a dog.
One of the best parts of this book is its Humorous way of painting a beautiful picture of the life of a dog. Louis's narration of the whole story from his own mouth makes this book very much special. It was for the very first time for me, when I indulged myself in such a different book where the protagonist is a cute dog. With every turning chapter, this book presents the feeling and emotion of an animal that it stores in its heart for humans. This book dives into the roller coaster life of Louis who's a pet in the jha family and soon becomes the most important member of the family.
In a nutshell, My illegitimate son is a story of love, Emotions, care, friendship and attachment that a person develops for the quiet creatures of this world and somehow nurtures a bond that can be ever lasting and way much stronger than human bonds. The most significant message that this book delivers in the end is that spreading love is the foremost thing we humans must adopt. Even when we hate someone or when life is not in our favour, our affection for others must not reduce. Louis's character is unforgettable and Sanjay's Humorous yet impactful storytelling skills truly stands out throughout the book. And the most adorable part of the book is its eye catching graphics of dogs that gets etched in your heart till the end. I really loved this book and will definitely recommend it to all.
"Love must be unmistakable, unconditional, with no expectations of a quid pro quo."

Intermingling humour and emotions, happiness and grief, joy and sorrow, anger and forgiveness, love and heartbreak together, the book narrates a poignant yet beautiful tale of an adorable Dachshund's journey through life, staged dramatically at a dysfunctional family abode.
Narrated entirely by the tiny protagonist, Louis, the book offers a peep into the human world, throwing light on their major follies and exposing their hypocrisies, from the perspective of a dog, whose magnificent journey through life proves that Dachshunds are the most superior creature, superior even to the humans. For, they know how to love, care and forgive better than the humans.
"If hate can infiltrate our minds so can love permeate our being."
The tiny, adorable and eye-catching illustrations by artist Bhavya, which captures the beautiful journey of Louis in the most creative way, serves to add a little something to the tale, tagging at the heart strings of the readers and drowning them in a range of emotions.
Embracing a heart-rending tale of love and loss, the book paints an exceptional picture of life filled with riotous laughter and abundant sorrow, capturing a tale that will make the readers smile and cry at the same time, and leave the pages with something deep resonating within their heart.
"The ending of one journey is a must for the beginning of another."

One of the most remarkable aspects of the book is Louis' bonding with Olly, another canine who becomes his brotherly figure. The portrayal of their relationship adds depth and warmth, touching upon themes of companionship and the unique understanding shared between dogs.
Author's storytelling shines through in his portrayal of Louis' pun-filled adventures, which are both humorous and relatable. The clever puns not only add a touch of light-heartedness to the narrative but also showcase the author's skillful way with words.
