We Two Alone: Attack and Rescue in the Congo

Rate this book
The crash of breaking glass woke me. I knew instantly that the terrorists had broken into our mission. Thus Miss Hege was suddenly catapulted into the world spotlight through her harrowing four-day pursuit and her companion's murder by Congo terrorists. Her vivid personal account of playing a deadly game of hide-and-seek with communist-trained terrorists provides us with the first book-length narrative of terrorist raids on Congolese missionary compounds.

This might have been a very good book. What Miss Hege went through is heartbreaking. She is a good author and can paint a very clear picture of the setting and people. You can also really see her heart for teaching people the Scriptures. But… It is so chaotic.
It starts out with the climax then jumps back to the birth of one of the missionaries. Okay, I’m used to that. Then after her fairly brief bio, it jumps back into the action, but only stays there for an hour or two then it’s back to the other ladies birth and the following bio. Back to the action for an hour or two, then it’s off to a description of the political scene. Back to the action. Now off to describe the local church. Back to the action. Off to discuss the purpose of missions. Back to the action. Off to describe what’s happening to every other missionary in the Congo. Back to the action. Now all of that action was only a couple of days long. So each time you get back to it only a couple of hours have passed. It was really hard to keep track of what is going on.
It would have been better as a short story, or completely reorganized.

This book has been on my to-read list since I was a teenager and found out I was middle named after Irene, one of the two main ladies whose lives are told in this book. I sat down having a general knowledge of their story but did not anticipate all that was told in a mere 192 pages. By the 2nd chapter I was in tears as I read the first hand account of Irene Ferel’s murder by the Jeunesse group in the Congo. In a heartbreaking but encouraging first hand account by Ruth Hege who watched her friend give her life for God knowing that even if we give our life for Christ’s sake it is a life well given when given for the One who gave it all.

The author jumps around quite a bit and you can get lost at times. However, the story and descriptions of service as missionaries was riveting. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Excellent story of two ladies who surrendered their lives to the Lord to serve Him in missions, and of the Congolese believers they worked with. Gripping account of lives caught in the midst of the 1964 Congo rebellion, and of faith in the midst of maximum strife. Challenging.
