Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
The Art of Naruto contains art done for the comic book covers and the Shonen Jump Weekly.
The hard cover book is well bind and the paper stock is great. There's no dust jacket. The first page is actually a multi-fold page that unfolds to a wider page.
For collectors of the manga comic book, the illustrations presented here will not be unfamiliar, except they are printed in a larger format. The colour reproduction is great. There are over 110 pages of them.
A detailed step-by-step tutorial on creating the comic is included at the end. It's informative to read about the workflow and type of tools used to create the Naruto comic.
Lastly, several pages are devoted to an interview with Masashi Kishimoto. It talks mainly about the characters and a little on himself.
This review was first published on parkablogs.com. There are more pictures and videos on my blog.
Not so much for the reading but for the art! I really love this book and have since the day i baught it! The artist himself does give us insight into how he colours in the back few pages and does comment on his ideas for each of the drawings!
I don't feel sure about how I want to explain my opinion of this book. The book itself, in terms of physical materials, design, layout, etc., is wonderful and I can find no fault there. But the content itself ended up being a mixed bag for me. Perhaps some of these feelings are coming from my long lost interest in Naruto in general. When the series first came out, I was one of its biggest fans (I even wore my Konohagakure headband in my high school senior photos!) but eventually it dragged on so long that I not only stopped watching/reading, I started feeling annoyed by the series' persistence. In a way, this change of heart makes me feel guilty, but that guilt only adds to my negative feelings, it doesn't ease them. I just got tired of Naruto and I'm still tired of it. So, unfortunately, I wasn't much inspired by the illustrations collected here. I did at least receive a boost of confidence as an illustrator, seeing published examples proving that my images don't have to be perfect to tell a great story that reaches the world. The section at the end with Kishimoto-sensei's illustration process and the notes about the included illustrations were all really interesting and valuable, but overall, I felt so apathetic going through this artbook that I am considering removing it from my library to make space for something that inspires me more. After all, going full otaku mode and getting inspired in my illustration career are the two reasons I even own artbooks. This one didn't let me do the former, and only partially helped me in the latter.
In a less personal view, for anyone who is a Naruto fan, I don't think you could go wrong with this book! It's beautiful, well-made, and has interesting and instructional content at the end. Definitely a worthwhile addition to any Naruto collection.
I love the art of Naruto, but this didn’t do it for me the way I hoped it would. It does not include illustrations for anyone besides Team 7 with the exception of a rendering every now and then of them with an additional character. Not blown away as a lot of the art felt like what I’ve seen a lot as manga covers and the like.
Absolutely one of my favorite artbooks of all time. The art style is vibrant just like naruto in the beginning of the series. Once shippuden happens the colors of the series becomes darker and the characters do too.
I really enjoyed the glossy art pages of some original drawings of Team Kakashi and other characters including Orochimaru and The Sound Four. My favorite bits are the spread outs of Team Kakashi, nature and Masashi Kishimoto's interviews.
