I ended up really liking this book, but you can find the recommended reading lists online, and that is the most valuable part of the book.
I started looking into taking a Children's Literature class this summer at some of the nearby universities. When I looked at the syllabus for this class at BYU, I discovered that the main focus of this course was to read lots of children's books and write up what was read. No papers, no essays, no tests. Since I don't need the credits for a degree, I ordered the text book, and I'm going to work my way through the book, and save the $300 tuition to BUY MORE BOOKS!
I was thinking I would like to invite some friends who also enjoy reading YA books to get the Children's Literature Briefly book and we'd work through it chapter by chapter, together. I want it to be all online . . . a yahoo group of some sort. that way we can write up the books on our own time, and not worry about planning schedules. And, then my ultra fun and cool sisters in law could do this with me!!
We could shoot for a chapter a month? Maybe every other month? In each chapter, the authors list 10 favorite books, then a long list of recommended books in each category (chapter). We could divvy up the 10 favorite books between the group, then read things from the recommended lists.
I haven't thought entirely through a plan for this, I'm just putting out feelers.
Is there any interest? LMK!
