Valerie Thomas is the author of the bestselling and much loved Winnie the Witch picture books, illustrated by Korky Paul.
Valerie was born in Australia and has lived there for most of her life. Although she doesn’t have a broomstick, she has traveled to most parts of the world, and she is now trying to organize her life so that she never has to experience another winter. She used to live with a big black cat exactly like Wilbur, but luckily her house was not black.
Winnie Flies Again is part of the Winnie the Witch series by Valerie Thomas, with the oddish and fun illustrations of Korky Paul.
Winnie has difficulties with flying. She tries to solve the problem with magic, but now the solution is a pair of glasses. Lovely story and cool illustrations.
Winnie takes to the skies in this third adventure from Australian author Valerie Thomas and British illustrator Korky Paul (I'm not quite sure why Paul's name is listed first on this one), running into all sorts of unexpected difficulties. Whether colliding with a helicopter, or crashing into a tower, it's Winnie's cat Wilbur who gets the worst of it, losing whiskers, clumps of fur, even a piece of his tail! Soon the duo are grounded, although surface transport doesn't seem any less disastrous. What is wrong with Winnie? And will she ever fly again...?
I enjoyed Winnie Flies Again, which combines a fun story with zany, attention-grabbing illustrations, and think it would make an ideal selection for the young reader who needs to get glasses. The solution to Winnie's problem allows her to return to an activity she loves, sending a very positive - but non-didactic - message to the child with ambivalent feelings about their own sight issues. Of course, the story and artwork are also just really funny! Definitely one for fans of "witchy" picture-books, a la Alice and Greta: A Tale of Two Witches or Meredith, the Witch Who Wasn't.
I’d read Winnie the Witch and loved it, and want to read as many Winnie books as I can find. Unfortunately, many are not available. I’ve found only two others; this is one of them.
This story about Winnie and her cat Wilbur is funny, fun to read aloud, has a great layout (sometimes you have to flip the page to read the text and see the 2 page picture layout, and it’s a great story for kids who need to wear glasses. Winnie can’t seem to find any mode of transportation that doesn’t lead to disaster, especially for poor beloved Wilbur, until she goes into a shop to order some tea, tea and a muffin for herself and a saucer of milk for Wilbur the cat. That misstep leads to a solution for her and for Wilbur too.
The illustrations are hysterically funny, and they make the story much more amusing. They’re so colorful and intricate and interesting. I love the illustration that’s on the inside front and back covers; it’s a beautifully colored picture of Winner with Wilbur on her broomstick with a black background.
Winnie and Wilbur are wonderful characters; they’re both very endearing.
There is nothing scary about these books, so they’re good “witch books” for kids who are fearful. They’re also great for anybody with a sense of humor who enjoys likeable cats and witches.
I’m waiting for a third title, and then hope to find some way to read more books in this series.
That delightful and inseparable pair Winnie the Witch and her cat Wilbur are at it again - thank goodness!
On this occasion, Winnie discovers that the normally empty sky is suddenly more crowded and, on her broomstick, she starts to bump into other flying machines and objects in the sky. A collision with a helicopter caused Wilbur to lose a whisker, a bump into a hang glider causes Wilbur's tail to get bent and even inanimate objects cause problems as she crashes into a skyscraper and Wilbur loses a clump of fur.
Winnie is peeved and so she takes out her magic wand, shouts her favourite word, ABRACADABRA, and turns her broomstick into different kinds of transport. She tries a fantastically designed bicycle but finds it slow and difficult to pedal and when she cycles into a pond and disturbs one of the frogs, she decides it is too dangerous. So … ABRACADABRA, she turns her broomstick into a skate board but it is difficult to steer and not easy to stop and when she crashes into an ice cream vendor, she decides that is enough.
Once again it is ABRACADABRA, and she turns the skateboard into a horse, which trots along much more sedately. But when she doesn't see a low branch she and Wilbur are suddenly hanging from the tree. She decides it is better to walk so the pair set off home walking; it is slow but at least Winnie feels safe. That is until she steps into a manhole and ends up in a tunnel that she dramatically climbs out of, looking very bedraggled.
She then goes into a shop and orders a cup of tea and a muffin plus some milk for Wilbur But it is not a tea shop and the assistant tells her so, but on hearing of her troubles she does say that she can help Winnie. It is an optician's shop and she sells Winnie a pair of glasses!
Problem solved! Winnie and Wilbur then begin to fly on the broomstick once more and are able to avoid any further trouble … happy times are here once more!
Winnie and Wilbur are a great pair and Korky Paul's illustrations really bring them to life - if that is possible, of course - I've not seen them anywhere in the sky around here for instance!
Estan muy bien las historias de la bruja Winnie con su gato Wilbur, muy cortitas pero como los peques quieren que se las leas tantas veces pues les sacas uso
The books about Winnie the Witch are just charming any time of year! Here, Winnie is having some trouble seeing other flying objects when she is out on her broomstick. Convinced that travel by broomstick is no longer safe, she and her adorable cat try other modes of transportation--all with humorously "disastrous" results! The solution is unexpected and charming. The illustrations are also just marvelous; so detailed and funny. I love Winnie's exasperated expressions as one thing after another goes wrong (gosh, I feel like she looks sometimes!) Also, and this is a slight spoiler, but I think this book would be a good one to share with children who need glasses.
Read with my Turkish host family's children. I've never read a Winnie the Witch book before but I know they're popular with children. Correction: I see that I read and reviewed the first book back in 2014. The illustrations were a little too chaotic for my liking and I didn't like how the cat kept getting injured. It was told in a strange way, as well, with chapter headings in a picture book. Then again, my edition was for 'learners of English' so maybe I didn't read the real thing.
I really enjoyed reading this book, even though it took me less than a day! It was very comical with lots of distinctive images to help tell the story. I think that this book would be suitable for all children and adults as it’s a nice gentle read with easygoing text and storyline.
Mi corazoncito. Pensé que el problema era que en serio había demasiado tráfico en el aire y resultó ser que Winnie necesitaba anteojos porque su vista fallaba. Auch.
Funny how you own some paperbooks at home and never think of writing a review for them, although you read them over and over again with enthusiasm. The Winnie the Witch series is one of them.
Winnie Flies Again was one of my son's favourite stories when he was little, and now it is one of my daughter's favourites as well. As a teacher of English, I often tell this story to my little preschoolers or younger primary school learners, and they always find Winnie funny and charming. The illustrations are so quirky and adorable, and they blend in with the story just perfectly; the partnership between the story author and the illustrator is really admirable.
In this particular story, Winnie the Witch and her grumpy, yet loyal cat Wilbur go off flying, but due to Winnie's poor eyesight, the two encounter numerous problems long the way. Their misfortune is eventually solved when Winnie gets her glasses, because not everything can be solved by magic. The story is fun and funny, but also very educational, because children fall in love with Winnie and, should the need arise for them to wear glasses, it will not pose a problem. If Winnie can do it, so can they. It also lets children see why some of their friends need to wear glasses, even though the moral is never obtrusively emphasized, nor does it feel like preaching. I am a proud owner of the edition for learners of English, which also includes activities by K. Harper, which offer every teacher great opportunity to work with this picture book on more levels than one. Not to mention how well the storyline lends itself to vocabulary extension on the topic of vehicles and verbs. There is a lovely fluency in the text, easily readable and acted out for and by children, with enough repetitive phrases for effective language acquisition, yet never losing the native language flow and feel. There is absolutely no need to worry about certain children fearing this witch - Winnie is just your friendly, neighbourhood elderly lady with a black cat and silly habits;)!
Winnie the Witch will definitely remain one of our favourites, along with all other books in the series. I recommend it to parents, grandparents and teachers! Learning and reading can really be fun!
Winnie travels everywhere on her broomstick, with faithful cat Wilbur, enjoying freedom from the over-crowded world below. However a turn of strange events makes Winnie question the safety of travelling by broomstick. She decides to swap her broomstick for a variety of other modes of transport, including a bicycle, a skateboard and even a horse.
As anticipated none of these seem to suit Winnie- all having humorously ‘disastrous’ results. After much speculation we see that the solution to Winnie’s problem is quite simple- a pair of glasses! This witty charismatic tale is ideal for children who need to wear glasses. It shows the importance of wearing glasses in quite a lighthearted funny way. Children will enjoy the graphic illustrations from start to finish.

Winnie's back - but is having trouble getting around because she keeps running into/over/down things. Poor Wilbur seems to get the worst end of their accidents.
The solution of glasses provides this story a practical answer to a very real problem. Thus, no fuss over the frames that are often maligned - by those that don't wear them and don't understand the enormous excitement and freedom they possess. Glasses are magic. Just ask Winnie. or me. or my dad. or my girlfriend. or .....
Side note: I love that Korky and Valerie use witchy drawings from family/friends for the endpapers of the book. This book is done by Oskar Paul 7 1/4.
The third story in the series about a witch (Winnie) and her cat (Wilbur) is as brilliant as the others. The illustrations are quirky and hilarious. This is a funny story about Winnie having trouble flying her broomstick. Usually the sky is clear but in this story she is having to dodge many obstacles! There are lots of repeated phrases in the story so it is familiar and comforting for children, and there are opportunities to get children involved by saying 'abracadabra' together, etc.
Bahkan kucing penyihir pun terancam tersenggol helikopter, paralayang, tersangkut gedung tinggi. Lalu dengan apa Winnie mengganti moda transportasinya?
