Chosen to save a people. Called to serve an enemy. Plunged again into the gray world of Lyric and Hazor, Susan and Mark search frantically for their teenage son, Jake, as all signs hint that a trusted ally has betrayed them. Assassins, political intrigue, false leads, and near misses beset their path, which will lead them into the dark prisons of Hazor before the One's purpose is revealed.
Cast out by those he trusts and preferring to cross swords with the One rather than yield to His will, Kieran flees to enemy Hazor, only to find that the One knows no borders. Pursued by his calling, Kieran finds a boy without a home, a king with burning questions, and a nation torn by darkness. As he embraces the tasks the One has set before him, this new Restorer learns that the One requires his all-perhaps even his life.

I love this book! It is so amazing. The story is so unique and original, unlike anything I have ever read. What I love about these books, is the way she portrays the importance and power of Scripture. That is just *so* cool to me. Definitely definitely check these out! You won't regret it!
I just think this is one of the most intriguing stories I have read in a very long while. It has buried itself in me that I find myself thinking about it at unexpected times, finding incredible parallels to the Scriptures I know to be true. This was an amazing fantasy adventure and I have already begun the next one. Wonderful story by a gifted author.
The One appointed him to be the Restorer, yet he is outcast from his own people. How can he trust and follow the One down this improbable path? Kieran's journey and his fight against the One is a remarkable story. As far as action and plot I found this second book took its time getting off the ground, yet once it got going it was an exciting ride to the final sword fight. The spiritual insight and application went above and beyond the first book and earns this title its own 5 stars.
**June 2018 Reread** Kieran of Braide Wood never expected to be the next Restorer. He seems the least qualified - he's half Hazorite, he isn't sure he completely believes in The One, and his relationships with his family are complicated. Plus he's just been banished from the clans! Where is The One and what is He thinking?!
Meanwhile Susan returns to this other world when she discovers that her son Jake has found the portal. As she and her husband frantically track their 18-year-old, they worry that he has fallen into the hands of the Council and is being manipulated for nefarious purposes.
I really relate to much of Kieran's internal struggle. On page 58 Kieran muses: "How did [Susan] contain the horrible anger at being chosen for something she didn't want to do?" Yes indeed. Many times what God calls us to do is so wonderful that it takes our breath away. But sometimes it's so hard that all we can do is fall on Him and trust that He knows what He is doing because we certainly can't see how it is going to work out. Sometimes there's anger and questioning and tears. This is a path I'm familiar with, too.
Kieran is about to have an encounter with The One that will forever change his life and and the shape of his future. The One makes no mistakes. He's not looking for amazing people, he's looking for amazing obedience. Like Kieran in Chapter 29, we may find that "He wouldn't release me from this path, but He understood my struggle. ... It was enough."
It turns out that Kieran is one of my favorite literary heroes. As I said in my review of the first book of this series, I do not read much fantasy, but these have captured my heart in a special way and I know there will be more rereads of them in the future!
Loved it! I liked Kieran from Book 1, he was a complex character begging for more development. I loved getting to read inside his head as he learns to yield to the One. I love how while some of his actions are similar to Susan's, he also is called to walk a completely different path.
One other detail I enjoy greatly about this series is the layering of villains and antagonists. Sharon does a wonderful job creating different levels of antagonists that are both near and far, and at differing levels of danger. I think part of why this sequel is so successful is because the villains and their plot threads carried over to create familiar danger in a new story. Excellently done!
Hating his new role as Restorer, Kieran fights against the One's plan until everything he knows is stripped away. Still, he'd rather die than do the simple thing the One asks of him. This path takes him deep into the heart of an enemy kingdom where life and death is in his hands.
With the terror of their son lost in another world, Susan and Mark find themselves caught up once again in the politics and dangers they thought were behind them forever. With constant threats lurking, they search in places they never dared venture before, believe things that seemed impossible.
When the journeys of the main characters crossover each other, it's not the old friends' reunion any of them wanted.

I can't begin to say how much I enjoyed this book. The characters are real, the wit and irony had me laughing out loud, and all the time turning pages to see what happens next. Sharon Hinck is a master storyteller, combined with writing that doesn't waste a sentence.
Add the spiritual lessons, and what more could you ask for? The scenes in the tower with the mist, the presence of God so close it seems you're in heaven. Then you walk out and life slams you back to the reality of a broken world. But you're now empowered to face the battles ahead.
This is fantasy that doesn't feel like fantasy, another reason I love it and can't wait for the expanded edition of The Restorer's Journey.
Well done, Sharon Hinck.
Edited to add: This is book 2 of The Sword of Lyric series.
i love this whole series. Sharon Hinck's character depth is amazing, and the way she can so well portray the struggles of totally different people is incredible. and the Biblical parallels are fun to spot. I love reading about Kieran. he's been one of my favorite characters throughout the series, and it's almost funny watching what he gets himself into and then heart-clenching watching the sacrifices, realizations, and changes he has to make to dig his way out. a powerful story. this is possibly my favorite book of the trilogy (and that's saying something!).
I think I liked this one slightly more than book 1 because I really like our MC in this book. (though we do still get Susan's POV in this one too.) I'm not sure why I loved him so much because he can be really cold and heartless, but it made him more interesting and I love seeing how drastically characters can change.
The Restorer's Son Expanded Edition is the icing on the cake! For those of us who've come to love the folks of Braide Wood (& will admit to having gotten so thoroughly engaged in the stories, that we found ourselves praying for "Kiearan" and other characters in our daily quiet times!), RSEE (Restorer's Son Expanded Edition) is everything we loved about the original, and all that we secretly hoped would be added, since we couldn't get enough of the characters and stories the first time around! :-)
I admit to being a bit of a Kieran fangirl (he's a bit Mr. Darcy, a bit Han Solo...exasperating and enchanting all at once!), so this book is a particular favorite in the series.
I majored in English in college & took one whole semester of Lewis & Tolkien as my textbooks, so my taste in spec fic is pretty high & picky...!!
Sharon Hinck joins an elite list of my favorite authors who know how to use the vehicle of fiction to tell the One True Story & to tell it well. Thank you, Sharon!!
3.5 stars This book was good, but not as good as the first book in the series. It was very enjoyable read, a bit slow at times and some of the story lines didn't really work as well as I thought they should. I enjoy Sharon Hinck's writing! It is so refreshing and enjoyable! She is so in tune to real life that it bleeds into her stories and makes them that much more relatable. I love her humor and her characters sass and sarcasm. It ended on such a cliff-hanger that I was so grateful I had book 3 on hand! If you read book one, definitely give this one a read because you need to read book 3 which is even better!
~Contains some violence and brief/vague mentions of a premarital relationship.
Oh. My. Gosh. This book was better than the first one. I am so loving this series. Sharon Hinck does a remarkable job telling a very compelling and 'sit on the edge of your seat' story but also being able to have a great faith base in there as well. And she had some amazing wonderful plot twists that I never would have seen coming but couldn't be more perfect. Another great story that I think EVERYONE should read.
Rated PG This story was more engaging than the first book of the series, which bored me to tears. It took me a couple chapters before I could actually get interested, though. Kiernan is a hard character called by The One to be the next Restorer for the people of Lyric. Following him in his journey from resisting his calling to eventually accepting it is intriguing.
Susan and Markkel return in search of their son, Jake who happened through the portal at the end of the first book. Not as much focus on Jake in this story, but there is promise for him to be more involved in the next book, which I intend to read.
It's not exactly Tolkien, but it's an enjoyable read.
The Restorer’s Son, is another intense read. God asks us to trust him. He only gives us enough information to take the next step. That’s where our faith comes in. The characters wrestle with doubts, fears, and confusion of is this really what I’m supposed to do when it’s so hard—all that we wrestle with in our own faith journeys. Clinging to the verses encourages us and reminds us that our powerful God is in charge and to call out to Him for help. The enemies are fierce, both in the book and in life. Look for great reminders throughout this adventure. You never know how the story will end until it’s done. Then, of course, it teases you into the next book.
When I had the immense pleasure of meeting Mrs. Hinck at a writer's conference, she whispered: "Just wait till you get to the second one!"
She was not kidding.
I loved this book so much. Depth of world. Depth of character. Not only did my favorite character fill most of the pages, we got to watch him struggle through his calling and encounter some very satisfying twists. I couldn't put it down. Just perfect.
OH!MY!WORD! I was immediately lost in drama. Twists and turns kept me turning the pages. I so enjoyed the spiritual truths woven throughout the pages. I read this novel in one sitting.
Recommend to readers who enjoy epic fantasy/
I borrowed a copy from my local library. I've expressed my honest opinion.
I’ve been reading this series as my friend owns them, and I didn’t want to charge my iPad while we RV around. I liked this second one more than the first because of the added perspective. This different perspective had fewer ridiculous lines as he had a different focus.
Loved this book! Sharon Hinck has done it again! I truly hope she keeps writing and allowing us to escape away with her on these fascinating and faith-affirming journeys! Good on you Sharon! Keep up the remarkable work!
I really loved this second book in the series! I appreciated the main character's different perspective on the One compared to Susan's view in the first book. I cannot wait to read the third and see what new truths the author reveals through the next Restorer.
The fast paced action continues in this second inter-universe adventure. Intrigue abounds. Betrayal hurts deeply. Surrender to the Sovereign's will is still hard to do
The Restorer's son picks up pretty much where the Restorer left off. **slight spoilers for those of you who haven't read The Restorer** A very relieved Susan and Mark have made their way back home safe and sound from their harrowing adventure in the grey lands of Lyric. This should have beeen the end, right? But no, they couln't posibly get off that easily! No sooner do they get home they find that their son Jake has stumbled through the portal! Now they have to go back to lyric and get him.
Kieran never asked to be the next restorer. Surely the One made a mistake! Kieran doesn't even believe in him, not really anyway. Confused and angry, Kieran is determined not to be what he is destined to be and fights it every step of the way. He refuses to stand up and take his place with the council. Instead, he runs, and stumbles right into a bucketload of trouble and one very confused teenage boy. Now battling to right the consequences of his mistakes, he travels deep into the lands of Hazor – and right into the One.
We get to see a lot more of Hinck's story world this time around, traveling to Hazor – the enemy kingdom from book one – instead of just moving throughout the clans. Hinck's world is well thought out and very realistic. You can almost imagine it really existing somewhere.
All the characters from book one are back, only this time we have everyone's favorite grouch, Kieran, as out viewpoint character for much of the book. The rest still belongs to Susan and her desperate search for her son.
Susan may have been a reluctant Restorer, but Kieran is downright belligerent. If there were a prize for stubborn, I say Kieran takes it. He may have to follow the plans of the One, but he will do it kicing and screaming most of the way. His impusliveness gets him into as much trouble as does his stubbornness. Yet even though he keeps getting himself in trouble, he still manages to bring about the one's purposes.
Sharon Hinck has created one of the most vivid and enchanting worlds in all of Christian fantasy with her Restorer series. If I were able to visit a fiction fantasy world, it would by Lyric. (Though I would struggle between that and Narnia!) I *love* Lyric - the people, the culture, their dedication to the One. But Lyric isn't all music and praise. There's a very real evil at work in the land, and the battles are fought with real weapons, both physical and spiritual.
When the first edition of The Restorer's Son came out, it was my first introduction to the Sword of Lyric series. I read the book in one sitting, absolutely captivated by the story of Susan and Mark entering a portal to another world in search of their son, Jake. I was drawn to Kieran's struggle against the One's call on his life. The mark of a great writer is the ability for a reader to place herself into the story, and I was right there with Kieran as he ran past the borders of Lyric, and straight into an evil that chilled me to the bone.
Now the extended edition is available, and I'm once again swept away to the world of Lyric. There's so much new, fascinating, thought-provoking, entertaining levels to the story! If you didn't read the first version, you MUST read this one. And if you did read the first story, you already know you MUST read this one!
In her Sword of Lyric series, Sharon Hinck created an amazing world to be found through the portal - Lyric, Braide Wood and Hazor, and wonderful characters like Susan, Tristan, Kieran and Linette. While the original edition of The Restorer's Son was a can't-put-down experience, Hinck's expanded version takes us deeper into this world, into battles between good and evil, between hardened hearts and the One who sees all, knows all - loves all. Not even the tough and hardened, reluctant hero Kieran can stand against the persistence, and love, of the One.
Following Kieran into battle, watching his struggle to accept his call and lay down his will before the One, makes us consider our own daily struggles to be more than we are. The additional discussion guide, the added surprises that Hinck has included, make The Restorer's Son Expanded Edition even more impactful.
This is not a book to be taken lightly - it is to be experienced. Journey with the characters, sing their songs, even eat their food. You'll be left wanting more! And you will be changed by your experience with the One.
Yay, this book was awesome! I can't believe I waited this long to read the sequel. This time the third book is already on hold at the library.
This book was just as good as the first one, only with more Kieran (which might make it better than the first one.) I really, really like this series. From the great storyline, to the engrossing characters, and the intricate worldbuilding, so far it has never ceased to amaze and entertain me. This is one of the best Christian fantasy series I have ever read so far. I cannot wait to read the third book!
This second installment of Sharon Hinck's Restorer series has been my favorite for a long while. I find Kieran's journey in this book to be so inspiring, moving, and challenging. I identify strongly with his armor of cynicism as well as with some of his wrestling with God. I long to be as fully transformed as he is in the course of this story. I love the way Hinck describes the way following God gives us a love for people we would never have imagined loving before.
I think I'm doing a terrible job of reviewing this book. Sometimes it's hard for me when I'm so close to the book, when I love it so much, to communicate that well. Anyway, I highly recommend you read this series, but please, start with book 1, not this one! :)
great story! I can hardly wait for the next one!!!*squees*
now to just get my library to get it.....if your guys'es libraries are being stubborn about buying this book series.....*whispers* tell them that there's no need to worry about wasting money....*grins* each book in this series has a money back guarentee!!! http://navpress.com/Assets/PDF/Produc... Part two of soccer-mom-in-alternate-reality (first book: The restorer). This one, however, is told from the point of view of one of the main characters from the last book, who is sort of a ruffian hero. And the voice just doesn't work. He doesn't at all sound like a ruffian hero, he sounds like the soccer mom who narrated the last book. The plot was otherwise somewhat engaging, but if the next book isn't better, I give up.
Second of the Sword of Lyric series, it's even better than the first book, *The Restorer,* and I thought that one was first-rate! Here, we get into the world of Lyric more deeply, and the marvelous outflow of plot and the main character, someone who doesn't wish to be the Restorer, and isn't even sure he believes in The One, is a marvalous example of working on the edge, and taking us places different from where we've been.
