This was better than it had any right to be. It is extremely light; the story was basically entirely propelled by the plot, and the characters had some interesting quirks but never felt like they were more than a grab bag of stock characters. But it all kind of worked. It probably would have been better off trimmed down to a short story, though; it's not a long book, but it's not deep enough to justify the length it has.

I have only myself to blame for reading this book. There were certainly a number of reviews that warned me about the scientific errors in the book. I'll add one of my own - two vessels flying close to each other in a vacuum cannot be affected by a "wake" - this is vacuum! This was a free/low cost offering from Amazon as an e-book but contained numerous formatting errors.

The authors promise "an action packed near future" thriller and I think they deliver on this promise. If you are a James Patterson fan you may enjoy this novel. I tend not to like the near impossible feats required to keep this type of story moving forward.

We are presented with cartoon like characters - the "hero" who can do just about anything, a brainiac sidekick who is seemingly one of the smartest guys on the planet, the protagonist whose only success seems to come from stealing the work of the hero. But, the worst "character" is the bad science cited by so many other reviewers. Perhaps it is inevitable sense we seem to have a political party that is now devoted to bad science that there is a market for novels that just ignore science.

You might ask why I give this two stars. Well , I did finish it ( more an act of stubbornness on my part) and the authors were true to their stated goal. For many years I avoided my youthful love of SciFi but have lately been attracted to the near future SciFi genre - hard SciFi that offers a realistic glimpse of what lays ahead. A far better offering in this line is "Perigee", also available as an e-book from Amazon.

I read this hoping for an interesting Sci-Fi read, and was mostly disappointed. The story line moves quickly, the sides are drawn in such as way as to easily see the difference, but there were so many things I didn't like:

-This seems to be a reoccuring point with reviews of the author's work, but it could have used quite a bit of proofreading, there were typos and incomplete sentences.
-I could never really connect with any of the characters very well. I'm thinking I should imagine Jarod as a kind of Matthew McConaughey, but I could never get it to work for me, I didn't really like his character.
-Far-fetched, beyone far-fetched. Science, what's that? Most of the action sequences didn't have any shot of being close to reality. Yes, stretching it a bit makes it fun, but throwing it out entirely makes it to implausible to be enjoyable.
-Writing style: I felt like the book couldn't make up it's mind if there was a narrator, or not. While it was NOT supposed to, sometimes the 3rd person omniscient voice when on such a diatribe that it became a bit of a character itself. This isn't bad if it's intended, but it wasn't so it was distracting. Also, I found that there were many times where the working was just plain weird and ackward, sometimes the phrases seemed to have been written by my 10 year old.

All in all, I found the ending disappointing, the adventure kind of flat and wholey unconvincing. My advice, give it a pass and read something more interesting.

The science in this killed it for me... Interesting characters and plot, easily discernible good guys and bad guys, but the science behind it just didn't fit. So I had to shelf it for now...

The final straw was the part where a super secret government single stage space vehicle takes off from I assumed North America and its escort (remember this is in the future) is Tomcat F14's. Not F22's or F35's, but Tomcats. Then the shuttle had to fly through all the sat's in geo-sync orbit, which all turned out to be attack sat's, that zipped to attack the shuttle and then "zip back to their original position". I'm not rocket scientist but I don't orbital mechanics work like that, especially using chemical propellants.

But again, I didn't think the story was bad, but there were just parts I could mentally get past... If a space adventure is your kind of thing, then this story might work well for you

First paragraph, "24º 30' N, 77º 30' W Tongue of the Ocean March 18, 2049 0900 hours, EST A sparkle glimmered in the space between Jarod and the sandy expanse before him. His feet dragged through the silt on the ocean bed, stirring up puffs of grains and clouding the water— as well as disturbing the occasional occupant. Rainbows of fish schooled past his vision, darting away from the perceived danger of this overworld intruder. Jarod tapped a button on the glowing instrument strapped to his wrist. Almost there. The holographic GPS display surrounded him, mirroring his slow progress with miniscule changes in the projected map that represented his location."

This book was action-packed science fiction with lots of evil types (government and otherwise) and some more-or-less good guys, but I thought it was a bit formulaic for my tastes -- I would prefer something not so predictable. The characters were quite a bit over the top -- the super wizard scientists who scrabbled with each other to write code that did various amazing things to thwart the other one while under extreme time pressure; the handsome jock leader who was maybe not so bright, but somehow automatically new how to run a space ship having never seen one before, and so forth.

Well, I can't say this book was horrid but I can say I'm not interested in whatever else the "Rogues" get into in future books. Glad this was free because I would have been disappointed if I had even paid .99 for it. Stereotypical characters; almost comically cartoonish villains, so many different perspectives. I'm no scientist but I could tell the author(s) didn't do much research in that arena. If they did, it was poorly portrayed. I was left feeling quite unsatisfied with the story.

Reading previous reviews, I'll have to say I read Science Fiction to be entertained, not for a science degree. And entertained I was! A rollicking space tale of Sea Hunt meets Buck Rogers! Taking the Rogues from the depths of the ocean shipwrecks to the diamond fields of the moon, this is a tale of non stop action with the right touch of humor to make it an enjoyable read. Will be looking for more of Jarod, Cleo, Buton and the rest of the Rogues!

This book is totally different than what Ms. McCray typically pens. Set in the future, there are star diamonds on the moon. Now people are rushing to "pan" for these. Problem is, the is corruption and foul play. People are being killed. Bombs going off on the Space Station. Now it's up to Jarod and his Rogue team to try and figure this out.

As I said, this is a different style of book that what McCray normally writes. However, it is not one that will disappoint.

While one really must set aside all knowledge of physics to enjoy this book, if one does so, it becomes a "rollicking space adventure". As a confirmed fan of hard science fiction and/or military science fiction, I'm almost embarrassed by how pleasant a diversion I found it.

But, when starting this book, do leave physics behind lest your willing suspension of disbelief be lost.

This was a LOT of fun. It was like SAHARA meets NATIONAL TREASURE. It had that kind of tone and punchy antics. The whole book felt like a action blockbuster movie. The good guys were underdogs that I could pull for and the bad guys were annoying and despicable. There was plenty of non-stop action that made the reading effortless. There is a sequel planned and I eagerly wait for it.

Couldn't put it down!

Loved this book! Fast-paced, clean, solid writing...is there anything better? So much imagination and care went into writing this book, that much is evident from the first chapter. I had so much fun reading this book. I devoured the story in a day and got more from McCray straightaway. You should too!

it was ok. not always factually accurate with occasional oddities in the writing style. if you want action and adventure without too much depth this book works very well.
