A demented mind? Or a mind with dementia? Viola Fisher may be in her eighties, look a bit zany, and pop out with an amusing rendition of a favorite song in the middle of a sentence. But tread lightly, because if you happen to resemble the antagonist in her last murder mystery or television show, or sound like a suspect in a recent news article, you may end up her next victim.
NEW YORK TIMES Bestselling Author Susan Stec loves her Cavalier Buddy, that first sip of AM coffee, the sound her keyboard makes when she's on a roll, 70's rock, chocolate (lots of chocolate), iced mocha, and getting lost in worlds where myth and legend are reality. Her characters are always humorous, usually crazy, and, well, snarky. Oh, and they swear a lot. But don't hold that against them. They mean well...most of the time.
The book arrived this morning and has coincided with a duvet day. The wind has been howling and my read only interrupted by reports of flooding and fallen trees in the local area.
So I have been curled up with Day tripper and the exploits of Viola. I do not intend to give away any spoIlers here. The author has captured the character traits of someone with dementia and mental illness living in a fantasy world that has unfortunate consequences for some unlucky people. There is humour here amongst the darkness, I found myself humming along to some of the lyrics. Perhaps it needs to be on the 'shock and giggle' shelf.
This is the first time I have read Susan Stec and would happily read more. A big thank you to Susan, and a happy reading to everyone else.
Hmmm. Unique. Clever story but very strange, starting out amusing and ending a bit creepy. About a demented old woman who thinks her dead husband (whose body she has upstairs and feeds tomato soup to) is constantly ringing her. She confuses novels and TV with reality and becomes a serial killer, all the while thinking she is bringing justice to the world.
Stec never fails to create unforgettable characters. This time around, she’s painted a picture of crazy in the form of a psychotic senior citizen. I don’t want to spoil the twists, but suffice to say, what starts out as an amusing bout of dementia quickly takes a disturbing turn.
