I read this book many years ago when I felt I was living in a wilderness spiritually. Recently I have been challenged to read it again. It is interesting to see that the impact it made all those years ago still ring true today.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you wonder what God is up to when life is difficult.

When I was a young Christian, this was one of my favourite Christian books. I read it multiple times. I remember going on a two month trip only having space for my Bible and one book; and this was the book I chose.

However the last time I read it was 25 years ago. I was curious to know what I would think of it now. While I am still a Christian, my faith has changed. Things that were important to me as a young Christian are no longer vital.

So I blew off the dust and re-read this book. I walked through these pages like revisiting the hallway of a childhood home - so familiar, yet oddly different from an adult perspective. And I found spiritual comfort. The comfort I found as a young Christian.

The wilderness that Moses and the children of Israel walked through was a place of suffering. And in this suffering, they encountered God. In my own life I’ve know suffering and this book reminded me of the spiritual lessons I have learned in my suffering.

The stark hot desert wilderness also strips life down to the bare essentials, showing the pilgrims who cross the desert what is important and lasting, such as individual character and relationships.

It was a pleasure to re-read this book. I could see again why I loved it as a young Christian. Jamie Buckingham is able to take the life of Moses and show how his example can encourage people like myself thousands of years later. When I’m in the wilderness suffering I need all the encouragement I can get.

This was a great read. A spiritual journey intertwined with the biblical story of the exodus.

This emphasised to me the importance of slowing down and taking things at stride instead of rushing through each and every aspect of life. It's an epidemic rampant through society that we switch from one dazzling shiny thing to the next, and to not do that is to be 'uncool' or 'uncultured'. It's hard to dissociate from that narrative especially with social media hurling everyone else's glamorous and curated lives into our noggins while we look at life trying to calculate the best angle to make it enviable to people we don't even care about on our social media page.

Anyways I digress. I'd definitely give this a read again. Especially the final couple of chapters focusing on solitude.

Thoroughly enjoyed the insights and story telling. Follows The Book of Numbers and the Exodus from The Holy Bible. Better understand just how much God loves me and cares for me in my own wilderness wandering.

This was pretty interesting, basically the author has went on several trips into the desert areas where the Exodus occurred and then gives insight and provides depth on some of the customs and the area which helps to better understand some of the events which a westerner might not grasp. The book also provides commentary which can be applied to your life (or the time in your own wilderness). I happened to read this the same time I was reading the Pentateuch and this was a great companion book (especially for Exodus and Numbers).

Very insightful, if only geographically. Added spiritual and biblical insights make it a long time favorite. Hard to obtain copies now.

Inspirational and encouraging perspective on Moses and the Israelites journey through the wilderness. Read with my husband - we both gleaned a lot of wisdom from it.
