The writer is pretty much of an airhead. Actually, his discussions of the movies themselves (the nuts-and-bolts aspects) are rather good, but his encapsulations at the beginnings and ends are painfully canned (it gets to where you expect to hear the Entertainment Tonight theme starting up during his last paragraphs). He also sprinkles the proper amount of trendy right-thinking phrases throughout the works. Oh yeah, and his selection of material isn't likely to dazzle you with its vast broad spectrum. Okay, he gives himself an out in the intro by saying that he couldn't get all the permissions that he wanted, thus leaving you at a loss for who is to blame for this circumscribed palette. I didn't actually have the DVD, so I guess I don't know what I was missing there; from previous experience though (and with apologies to Dustin Hoffman), I'd have to say probably not a lot.

One more thing: how could Joe not mention Busby Berkeley's "Lullaby of Broadway" in the Greatest Musical Moments section? Boggles the mind.

This gorgeously laid out hardcover comes with a DVD, hosted by Dustin Hoffman, so that the readers can watch the unforgettable film moments while reading about them—pretty cool, huh? It’s always a crapshoot when you buy a book about “the greatest” films or actors, because you might not agree with the author’s personal favorites. Joe Garner has an obvious preference for modern movies, and more particularly “guy movies,” so for male movie buffs out there, this one will probably be a favorite.

In the book (and corresponding DVD) Garner showcases 25 movies, mostly male-oriented legends, like The Godfather, Jaws, National Lampoon’s Animal House, Wall Street, Alien, The Exorcist, and Dirty Harry. I’m not trying to be sexist, and I’m sure many girls out there like those movies; however, for me personally, I sat through Dirty Harry solely for the eye candy.

The book itself is really beautifully designed. The pages are varied with interesting borders, and several large, high quality stills are included for each highlighted film. Background, synopsis, backstage stories, and ultimate reception of each film are included in the written portions between the photographs. And perhaps my favorite part: After each movie, Garner includes a one-page buffer, sort of like a “If you liked this. . .” section that provides other film suggestions for his readers. On the sides of these pages is a film strip, each cell with a still from each movie discussed, and a few sentences are written in case the reader has never heard of the film. For example, after Casablanca, he lists iconic Humphrey Bogart movies; after Thelma and Louise, he lists buddy movies.

Another great thing about the layout of this book that saves an argument between the reader and the author is the ranking of the 25 unforgettable movie moments. Garner features the movies chronologically by release year. If you think Cast Away is the greatest movie ever, you won’t take offense that it’s in the back of the book, since it was released in 2000. I recommend this book, especially for male moviegoers, but for ladies, too. After all, the pretty page designs shouldn’t go unappreciated!

With a handful of iconic movies picked out you get a brief overview of the movie and a few descriptions of what took place behind the scenes.

While it was a quick and easy read I do wish that it had been a bit longer with a more movies picked spanning a deeper dive into the chosen genres.

With that said though it was still enjoyable.

This was much more than a mere Hollywood history pictorial. While articles accompanying each of the selected movies were just 2 pages, they were very informative and dwell mainly on what was going on behind the scenes which made these movies so special in the end.

This book (and DVD) were much better than I expected. I have seen most of the highlighted films but the behind-the-scenes stories about them were fascinating. After I finished the book, I made a long list of movies I now want to see, either again or for the first time. I'll probably start tonight!

I have watch 16 of the 25 featured movies in this book. Not bad. The DVD was interesting with the clips that highlight the movies unforgettable moment. The chapters go further into what makes them stand out from the other movies.
