From 1706 to 1745, this trilogy charts the story of Rob Roy MacGregor and his gallant nephew, Gregor, both fierce opponents of their rulers' plan to unite the Scottish and English parliaments. Contains "MacGregor's Gathering"; "The Clansman"; and "Gold for Prince Charlie".
Nigel Tranter OBE was a Scottish historian and writer. He was the author of a wide range of books on Scottish castles, particularly on themes of architecture and history. He also specialised in deeply researched historical novels that cover centuries of Scottish history.
5/5 stars for all three books, each book follows a different perspective, with each a unique main character from the Macgregor clan. All the books were fast pace, extremely detailed in the locations, and has one of the best action scenes that I have ever read in a book. This book takes place in 1700's Scotland and follows the risings of 1715 and 1745 (sadly book 3, Gold for Prince Charlie, takes place after Culloden, I would have loved to read that war scene). Book 3 took a while for me to get into but damn those last 100 or so pages had me hooked, I wouldn't stop reading for the rest of the day. I just had to know what happened next. Overall, amazing books, but don't get the hype they deserve, I would definitely recommend these books and are a favorite of mine. Also, I will be picking up more books by Nigel Tranter in the future.
