A History of Greece to 322 B.C.

Rate this book
This new edition of a well-known history of ancient Greece presents a modern interpretation of Greek ideas, culture, and history. Although the book's primary focus is on the political and military history of the Greek states, the prehistoric period and the intellectual, social, and economic backgrounds are also covered. N.G.L. Hammond's work thoroughly documents its ancient sources, and directs readers to further studies in the field. Updated and revised, the third edition adds new material on the significance of the spread of tumulus-burial in Albania and the Mycenaean world, the dating of early coinage, the decree of Themistocles, and on aspects of the rule of Alexander the Great. Wide-ranging in scope, yet rich in detail, this work adds a modern perspective to the study of a fascinating ancient culture.

If you’re looking for just one book to take you on a journey starting with the very beginnings of Greek culture, through the turbulent times of fratricidal wars up to the death of Alexander the Great, I’d say this one does its job. You need to keep in mind tough that with almost 1500 years to cover (including those 200 that witnessed an almost continuous warfare) even the 700 pages Hammond invested in the task still means merely scratching the surface.

Forced to make a choice the author opted for a geopolitical narrative that only cursorily mentions the cultural development of successive periods. He puts the works of Plato or Phidias in the context of the events described but that’s about it. If you’re looking for even a simplest introduction to their heritage you need to look elsewhere. This tendency also means that preference is given to reporting the facts rather than intentions and emotions that stand behind people decisions. It’s not that this aspect is entirely missing, you’re able to get a general idea of forces that drive individual people, groups or póleis, but it’s hardly enough to let you grasp the reason behind sometimes a page long sequences of “A sacked B but two lines further allied with them to fight C who got money from D who until now had been paying A..”.

These all are real shortcomings but if you account for them and supplement the missing aspects from somewhere else the book is outstanding for its own part. I read the book simultaneously listening to Donald Kagan’s lectures/podcast on Ancient Greece. It’s pure merit, it’s Yale, it’s free and it’a all about why. You’ll find the missing parts there.

Excellent book. Although a little dry in style at times (Hammond was more known for his expertise on Macedonia than on Greece, and truly his style gets more vivid about Alexander), but the structure of the book and writing and the research are excellent. This is an old book now, my edition is dated 1986, so I'm not sure how much is changed or detailed further by archeological clues, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Compelling, comprehensive and erudite, but, barring some exceptional passages, extremely dry. Still, I'm very glad to have read it (and relieved to have finished it). A very thorough treatment of an immense time span. If ancient Greek history intrigues you, this tome is definitely worth a good hard look. The scholarship seems first-rate and the book definitely rewards the effort it takes to read it.

Written with depth, breadth and zeal. Loved Hammond’s opinions scattered throughout. Prose like his is why I gravitate towards history. Erudite yet comprehensible. Perfect mix for a dilettante like me.
