After nearly dying in the line of duty, the FBI’s top criminal profiler Genevieve Callow contemplates a quieter life while struggling with survivor’s guilt.
She’s reminded every day that while she was fighting for her life, another predator was stalking the night in her hometown.
The Icebox Killer.
She knows now that home isn’t safe.
But she’s haunted, tired, barely recovered. There are other agents on the killer’s tail. They should be able to catch him.
Or can it only be her?
Now, in one brazen act, the killer has called out to her by name, taunting her―a game of cat and mouse.
Callow has a choice: Run and hide, or do what she does best and catch a maniac before he strikes again.
Even if facing him means the Icebox Killer claims one more victim …
David Viergutz is a disabled Army veteran, a law enforcement veteran, a husband and a proud father. He's also a storyteller, an author of thrillers and horror novels that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
As a teenager, David would often be found dragging a backpack full of books to class, leaving his textbooks behind. He was always captivated by the worlds that authors like Nix, Tolkien, King and Patterson created, and he dreamed of one day creating his own.
Years went by and David found himself serving his country in the military, and later in law enforcement. The experiences he had during those years were both thrilling and terrifying, and they left a deep impression on him.
One day his wife sat him down and gave him the confidence he needed to start putting his imagination on paper. From then on, his creativity knew no bounds and he poured his heart and soul into his writing.
Now, David weaves tales of pulse-pounding realism and nightmare-inducing horror where his years in uniform have given him an unparalleled understanding of the criminal mind. Take the plunge and start reading David’s thrilling crime novels and terrifying horror adventures.
I just finished One More Victim, and I’m honestly still reeling from it. This book was such an emotional rollercoaster—it was truly heartbreaking at times, but that just made me root for the characters even more. I absolutely loved the main character; they felt so real and relatable that I was completely invested in everything that happened to them. The author did an amazing job blending high-stakes suspense with just the right amount of romance to give the story some warmth. It’s rare to find a book that can make your heart race from tension one minute and ache with emotion the next, but this one nailed it. I couldn't put it down!
Callow is trying to put things behind her after her best friends murder. But the Icebox Killer has other plans. He wants her to try and stop him. He taunts her. Can Callow stop him before he kills again? Callow has three days. Edge of your seat pulse pounding read.
You’ve got to give David Viergutz credit, the author has range! While his moniker “the master of malice” suggests someone who writes solely in the horror genre, a glance at his prodigious bibliography — 29 books published in just a handful of years — shows that he has tackled many genres, including science fiction and fantasy. One More Victim is an FBI thriller/mystery reminiscent of Silence of the Lambs.
Viergutz was a police officer before he became a full-time writer, and that experience gives this novel a sense of authenticity. Callow is an appealing lead character with interesting flaws and believably human responses to the horrors she goes through. The last third of One More Victim is very suspenseful. I look forward to reading more of this series.
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Callow is recuperating from her last case where she was almost killed. She has just been taking it easy and was now getting bored. She was ready to go back to work and catch the "IceBox" killer. The Icebox killer had already killed two women of which one was a very close friend.
She returns to her office and is told that she is not the principal, but a consultant. As it now stands the team has not been able to find a lot of evidence to discover who this individual was. This person has taken another woman and by doing so, he made it personal for Callow. Callow had gone to a meeting and after going home, she discovered a picture that was taken at the meeting where she went of the woman shown in the trunk of her car. Once she discovered it, she immediately called for help.
As part of the Iceman's M.O., he would only keep the victim for a short time before he ultimately killed her and then would leave the body in a location for someone to find. Knowing the time constraint, the team began getting information on the last victim and then trying to locate individuals who might be able to help. For this case the FBI wasn't notified promptly and when they started looking on their own, they discovered that the policy were sloppy and it explained the lack of knowledge that had been received.
As the time was getting closer to the point where the body would be discovered, Callow had a plan and told it to the few individuals that were available for what they hoped would finish the case. The team each were assigned a location and Callow was to be the bait.
To discover who the killer was, what Callow's plan for capturing him, what action happened as a result, then you need to read this book. The ending answers any questions that you had.
This was an adrenaline packed, intense and highly entertaining thriller that once I started, I got so swept up in the story, I could not put it down. Every little bit of information or clue being presented to us readers made me feel like I was right there in the midst of the investigation. I found myself cataloguing little snippets of information in my mind to see if I could figure out who the killer was before Callow or the FBI did.
Callow is still healing from almost being murdered by the most recent serial killer she put behind bars. Now she is being thrusted into the spotlight of another serial killer dubbed the Icebox Killer. And just to add to her almost being killed, the Icebox Killer’s first victim was Callow’s best friend. Talk about emotional turmoil at its best.
Callow goes through a lot of ups and downs throughout this story. She never gets enough sleep and now she is right in the middle of a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the Icebox Killer. He’s taunting her, throwing her little teases, but never leaving any clues. He makes her feel alone and incapable of solving who he is or rescuing his latest victim before he kills her.
This story was really well written with fantastic, quirky and unique characters, and with a plot that was dark, suspenseful, intense, and utterly twisted, keeping me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.
I am now so invested in this new series that after finishing this one, I am left waiting on bated breath for the next suspenseful murder mystery to come out.
Please note: I was given a copy of this book and have voluntarily decided to give it this honest review.
One More Victim is the second book in the Callow and Oakley FBI Thriller series. Senior Special Agent Genevieve Callow and her partner Special Agent Marcus Oakley are assigned to a new case. A serial killer, called the Icebox Killer, kidnaps young women, holds them hostage for three days, then tortures and kills them. Despite dumping his victims in public places he remains an unknown threat to the public and has already killed at least two people and abducted a third, who is only two days away from meeting a horrific fate. The killer sends threatening messages to Callow yet remains unknown. Local police detectives, who have been unable to locate the killer, remain hostile to the presence of the FBI and their agents. This case is personal with Callow since the first murdered victim was a close friend and she is determined to find the killer. Clues are presented in the story, quirky suspects are interviewed and assistance is offered from unexpected sources. I read the prequel in this series, Red Mud River, and was familiar with the characters, but there are new characters, unexpected surprises, plot twists and unanswered questions in this new book that make me want to read the next installment.
A continuation of 'Red Mud River,' this book opens with Genevieve Callow and the aftermath of what she went through. After a lot of difficulty coming to terms with what had happened, she doesn't get to rest as the Ice Box killer continues to taunt her. Her life is torn open between getting help or being the help to the FBI.
This book was like an episode of the television shows "Criminal Minds" and "Law & Order," but on steroids. 'One More Victim' begins with a small fire and quickly explodes into a bonfire of suspense.
I found myself questioning everything just as Callow had to, in order to get to the truth of the matter. As the reader, I felt myself relating so much to this main character, even though I haven't been in the FBI or had to worry about a serial killer. David Viergutz is a master at emotion, putting you right in the heads of the characters-and bringing the reader in for an intense journey.
I can say this with honest sincerity, I am fully invested in this series and need to know where it's going. This is one of my favorite stories, and I am eager to see what happens next. I 1000/10 recommend for anybody that loves a high suspense murder mystery. This is a book that will leave you thinking about it long after you have finished it.
Red Mud River is a great start to a new series the Callow and Oakley FBI Thriller. Red Mud River has everything you could ever ask for in an FBI thriller novel. It has the suspense that keeps you glued to the pages racing to the end to see who did it. It has all the mystery that pulls you in deep leaving you wanting more and more.
I love stories like Red Mud River. I like seeing how a profiler works. I like seeing them pull a case together. I like seeing their minds work when they are trying to put together a case and trying to figure out a person, like who they are and why they do the things they do, and why they do them the way they do.
Stories like this are so intense and will keep you on the edge of your seat hurrying the characters along on the case as you want to know all about it now. Red Mud River is a story just like this, a story where you can’t flip those pages fast enough.
I love watching stories like Red Mud River on TV and I do believe that Red Mud River would make a great TV series.
Grab your copy of Red Mud River and watch as Callow and Oakley try to find a serial killer!
When I read a book involving a serial killer, this book is how I would like the story to unfold. I was grabbed right from the beginning and not let go until the very end. Callow is one hell of an agent, willing to take chances (many say crazy) so that she can catch a killer. She was able to get into the killer’s mind and find out the “why” of his patterns. She was able to show how affected she was by previous tragedy and to describe if she wanted to continue with the BAU unit. This author was very good at describing what it must be like to experience this type of person on a daily basis. There was not a quick epiphany all the time. The author put the detectives under fire for not coming up with answers quick enough for the higher ups. As the time ticked away, I was right there with Callow and her team trying to find something; anything that would give them an idea of who the Icebox Killer was. I can only hope this author continues this series because I am a big fan and want more of Callow and team.
Overall I really enjoyed One More Victim. It's a solid thriller that grabbed me right away. The protagonist, SSA Callow with the Behavior Analysis Unit of the FBI, is a relatable character. She's smart and tough, but not without her faults and weaknesses. The story is fast-paced and suspenseful and you will find yourself invested in how Callow will solve and survive the case, both physically and emotionally, of the Icebox Killer. The only reason I rated this down to 4 stars is that there wasn't the big twist at the end I was looking for. While the killer turned out to be different that who I thought it would be, it still wasn't anyone I had taken off my radar while reading the story. This is second of Viergutz's works I have read and it will certainly not be the last.
David Viergutz is a new author for me and I'm not usually a horror-story reader, but I will say this tory hooked me and reeled me in in a way I found impossible to put down. It re-opened my love of murder/mystery, but there was something more addictive in this author's method of writing. Maybe it's because he's an active police officer, I don't know. But I'm eagerly looking forward to his next story. In this story the importance of having one's partner is brought home with Genevieve Callow and her partner - he's there no matter what, believing in her and going to bat for her when all else is failing. The story is "today believable" and one of the most awesome I've read in a long time. The 5 star rating I've given this story doesn't seem to be enough but is the highest I can give.
David has a way of writing strong yet vulnerable female leads. Genevieve Callow is not a perfect person, she has flaws and wears them for everyone to see. She can be stubborn, does not follow the rules, takes chances ... but these traits get results. In One More Victim, all these traits come to light. Recovering from the capture of, and almost death at the hands of, one serial killer she is being actively sought out by another. This was such a perfect read. Exciting writing that sweeps you along with it. I very much enjoyed it. I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and unbiased opinion of the tale
Another great entry into the Callow and Oakley saga. I was lucky enough to be part of the early readers for this and once again I had a great time reading about my new two favorite FBI agents. Callow is such a compelling character as she is flawed but so determined not to let her flaws ruin her. Oakley is her steadfast partner who is always there to bring her back down to earth. Although some parts of this novel were a little slow for my liking all the build up brought the conclusion to a fun and fast paced ending that left me wanting more. I can't wait for the next one to come out and to see where these two characters go for their next adventure. Highly recommend.
If you're in need of a book that will literally stop and re-start your heart then this is the book for you!
A continuation of the prequel Red Mud River, this covers the conclusion of the Ice Box Killer mystery.
Twists, turns, and boatloads of red herrings, I was not disappointed. I loved this book. I had trouble putting it down to get on with the rest of my day lol.
I loved the cat and mouse chases. Nothing better than a great battle of the wits. Love love love.
I highly highly highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.
This is a magnificent thriller that pulls you in and won't let go till you turned the last page.
One More Victim begins where Red Mud River ends (I strongly recommend to read that one first) and gives us a thrilling ride towards the conclusion of the Icebox Killer case. I love the main characters in this series and for most of the novel I was scared they were in over their heads. So, lots of tension !
Absolutely brilliant. I seriously hope this series will continue!
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I found this novel to be tautly written and full of excitement. The author does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life and the world-building is excellent. I was able to read this in a couple of days because it flows so well. I received an arc copy and this is my freely given opinion.
I loved the characters. I can’t wait to read the book. Written from a different perspective them most other thrillers. Came directly from the main characters not the victims of the murderer. Well written. Refreshing if you can call a book about serial killers refreshing.
David Viergutz takes the reader on a break-neck, high-speed race from start to finish. While I was reading, I wouldn't have been surprised to realize my hair was blowing back as if I was riding in the first seat of a rollercoaster. The action is that fast and furious with, of course, an ending I didn't anticipate. Great writer, great read.
From beginning to end this book draws the reader in. Never once could I guess what would happen next. The character# so real, one empathizes with them. I can’t wait to find out what Callow and Oakley run into in the next book. I highly recommend this book to everyone!
An excellent, well-written, fast paced, page-turner which keeps you engaged from start to finish. Well recommended. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is an enjoyable first story in this fast paced & high tension FBI thriller! Interesting ideas & plot, kept the twists & turns coming none stop! There is a fairly high level of angst in this novel due to the personal situation of the main female character. Overall a good fun read!
This was a fantastic book. I had a hard time putting it down. Extremely well written, characters who felt real, and a top notch story. If you like crime thrillers this book does not disappoint. Hoping there’s more in this series! Well done David!!!
This book is a little to boring for me. I skipped more pages than I read. I will not read the other book. This is like my thrillers that I usually read. Would not recommend.
If pulse-pounding action is your cup of tea then this book will more than satisfy you. A perfect addition to your library. Breathtaking. Highly Recommended.
As always, once I start one of David's books, I can't put it down. He is an awesome writer. He is one of my very favorite writers, ranking up there with Stephen King.
Finally, the follow up to Red Mud River! Callow & Oakley are a great team, and the Icebox killer gives them a run for their money. Nail-biting, emotional, and hard to put down!
"There's no crying in baseball!". The quote will be obvious after you read the book; harrowing, tragic, brutal, heinous and vicious events truly take their toll but .....
