Verse by Verse, the Book of Mormon is a two-volume, user-friendly commentary that balances doctrinal commentary with quotations from General Authorities, cultural and linguistic insights, and thorough but intelligible helps for understanding difficult scriptural passages. Informational sidebars also provide new glimpses into topics such as angels who've come to earth; names and titles of God; the Holy Ghost; moral cleanliness; how prophets testify of Christ; the importance of record keeping; Book of Mormon teachings about war; what it means to be a covenant people; and the love of God. The authors have created a valuable resource for students of the scriptures, young and old alike.
I have always resisted reading too much doctrinal commentary because it sometimes mutes the purity of the voice of the scriptures for me, but I wanted to change up my own personal scripture study to see if I couldn’t deepen my own understanding. I am enjoying this compliment to reading just the scripture verses themselves. I’m still not a huge fan of the retelling of what I just read, which is a big part of this book, but I love hearing what prophets and apostles have said. I found the analysis of Jacob 5 especially illuminating and have made many notations in my own scriptures so I can revisit especially touching things I’ve learned. I will be continuing on with the second volume.
While it doesn’t actually cover each and every verse Verse by Verse: The Book of Mormon, Vol. One gives background information, quotes from scholars and general authorities, and explanation, complete with footnotes and scripture references, for most of the verses from 1 Nephi to Alma 29. I found it to be very useful and an excellent addition to my scripture studying time. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to dig in deeper to the Book of Mormon.
I found this to be quite helpful for my study. It was typical of most commentaries. I filled it under prompt book with a map for Read with Allison 2024 reading challenge.
A fantastic companion to reading the Book of Mormon. I know DKO personally and I can hear his wonderful lecture and teaching style all through the book. Wonderful thoughts, insights and references...wonderful examples and ways to look at things that I had not thought of before. I strongly recommend this book to everyone. Thanks DKO for another great book, and for sharing your experience and knowledge.
Excellent companion book to study the Book of Mormon. It brings out small details that might be missed while reading the Book of Mormon and ads stories from other scriptures, from General Authorities and the authors' lives. It is, however, a must to read the Book of Mormon verses first or the book does not make sense. It's not a book to sit down and read though, but rather a companion book which needs the original material to make sense of the commentary.
I'm extremely disappointed; I didn't live up my expectations. I didn't have all the verses. It was okay at first but as I continue with it, I learn that were quite a few verses missing and only had what they considered "the most important verses" and left out the other verses that aren't as "important."
My dad bought me the volume 2, so I decided that I should get the volume 1, and learned that was a mistake. In the end, I decide to exchange for a different book.
I was expecting a lot better given the caliber of the authors. I'd stick to the student manual for a good commentary/discussion of the Book of Mormon. There were some good points brought up but for the most part the book felt like off the cuff commentary.
This was generally a very good commentary. Sometimes the statements were kind of obvious and I wished that they would go a little deeper, but only in some areas. It was mostly very informative and offered good applications that I found meaningful. Very expensive though....
