Teaching Happiness and Well-Being in Schools by Morris, Ian (2011) Paperback

Rate this book
There has recently been an explosion of interest in positive psychology and the teaching of well-being and ‘happiness' in the PSHE world in schools and many teachers are looking for clear information on how to implement these potentially life-changing ideas in the classroom. This book provides an introduction to the theory of positive psychology and a practical guide on how to implement the theory in (primarily secondary) schools. The American psychologist and writer Martin Seligman, well known for his work on the idea of ‘learned helplessness', has more recently been working in the field of positive psychology. He has led training in resilience in a number of UK local authorities. Wellington College, where Ian Morris is head of philosophy, religion and PSHE, is among the first UK schools to introduce a formal well-being and happiness curriculum developed by the author.

When Sir Anthony Seldon, current president of IPEN, wanted to introduce positive education in Wellington College, he gave this mandate to Ian Morris. This book is based on Ian's experience teaching well-being in one of the first schools following the positive education paradigm.

The book is extremely well written with clearly identified practical tips and exercises that one can do with students. While someone steeped in positive psychology/ education may already be knowing most of the theoretical stuff, still seeing Ian explain the concepts lucidly and apply them to a school setting is gratifying.

For anyone contemplating introducing positive education, or actually delivering such sessions, this will be god-sent. Some of the brain based stuff is probably simplistic and this is where he may have oversimplified things or presented a slightly non-nuanced picture.

Overall a pretty good and practical book.

This book is good for those involved in school education. Book talks about education, the purpose of education, and how to incorporate well-being into the curriculum to raise children with empathy. The book also talks about wellbeing of teachers.

Excellent! Every school should have at least one copy of this book and, more importantly, put the theory into practice! Society as we know it would change for the better! I will certainly be using some of the ideas alongside those I already employ in the well being course I teach and there are whole school issues to bring to the attention of the rest of the staff too.

Trite. Jonathan Haidt is oppressive enough with his rider on the elephant metaphor throughout both of his major books. This book uses it even more obnoxiously and continuously. The classroom suggestions are shallow too.
