Questions, questions…

Fabia Kingsdale found herself traveling to the heart of Europe in place of her sister. Unlike Cara, Fabia wasn't an experienced journalist, but Cara just couldn't go, and she would be losing the interview of a lifetime. Fabia decided she would get the answers that Cara needed to write her article, and she'd ask questions later!

But Ven Gajdusek was notoriously difficult to pin down, and Fabia realized from the start that it wouldn't be easy to fool him. In fact, it was asking for trouble to complicate things further by falling in love with a man like Ven!

Jessica Steele was born on May 9, 1933 in the elegant Warwickshire town of Royal Leamington Spa. She has two super brothers, Colin and George, and a lovely sister, Elizabeth. She was a delicate child and missed a lot of school. In fact, she left school at aged 14, when she was diagnosed as having tuberculosis. At 16, she started work as a junior clerk. In 1967, Jessica married with her husband, Peter and within a very short space of time they had moved from her hometown to the lovely area where they now live. Their house is built into the side of a hill, and has beautiful views over more hills and valleys. Her brothers and her sister are very close and she has plenty of nephews and nieces to make up for the fact that she and her husband have no children of their own. Both she and her husband are more than a little dog-oriented, and their current dog is a Staffordshire bull terrier named Florence. Florence is gorgeous. She loves everybody but, since she is 40 pounds of dynamite and would hurl her boisterous self at everyone she meets - given half a chance - she has to be restrained (as much as possible). She is fun.

Her husband spurred Jessica on to her writing career, giving her every support while she did what she considers her five-year apprenticeship (the rejection years) while learning how to write. She published her first books in 1979. Jessica has tried using a typewriter, but it just doesn't work for her. She is much happier writing in longhand, and in actual fact has a dozen or so fountain pens filled and ready to go at the start of any one session. A friend has a secretarial agency and, after deciphering Jessica's writing, returns an immaculately typed manuscript. To gain authentic background for her books, she has travelled and researched in Greece, Russia, Egypt, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Hong Kong, China and Japan.

I know Jessica Steele has a slightly unorthodox way of structuring her sentences (most of them have to be in excess of 50 words), but I generally find that slides off the proverbial ducks back because her stories have such infectious charm. This novel, however, lacks both the author's sparky dialogue and the presence of a feisty, independent heroine.

In 'West of Bohemia', more of the word count is devoted to describing the delights of the Czech Republic than to building chemistry between the protagonists. The heroine wasn't written to kindle the interest either - young Fabia is a pretty immature dogsbody, even by early 1990s standards, who wavers to the will alternately of her manipulative older sister and the paternalistic (famous author) hero.

In a nutshell, if you're keen to read detailed descriptions of traditional Czech dishes and find a HEA credible where the protagonists have little in common and a large age and, even more substantial, experience gap you might enjoy the story more than I did.

I'm giving this novel a three-star vintage romance rating - if you have leisure to opt from a selection of Jessica Steele books I'd recommend instead selecting Fortunes of Love, Passport To Happiness or Reluctive Relative.

This is not one of my favourite foreign trips by Jessica Steele as the heroine (22) is very worthy, dull and needy. The hero (mid 30s) is a tad arrogant and only falls for her at the last minute when he thinks she is unavailable (he calls her clingy at one point to put her off, but it is true). It does start off quite well, but becomes so bland - lots of space is given to the heroine feeling sad/worried/jealous and the hero having other things to do. It's a shame as it had potential.

Interesting story with a h that must interview a Czech writer, Ven the H. But the problem is she is not a journalist. She has changed her identity with her sister to help her not to loose the opportunity to make the interview of a lifetime. But it happens that Ven hasn’t accepted to be interviewed, all was a sort of revenge from his secretary. And Fabia the h cannot get any of her questions answered by Ven, in spite of Ven acting as a gentle host to her and showing Fabia Prague and Bohemia’s many touristic attractions.
Added to this are all positive points of Jessica Steele’s writing: Heroes are never violent, but able to show tenderness to heroines. She tells stories where you can feel love growing slowly and in a steady way.
A not so positive point: I normally like H and h to explain their motives when acting in a certain way at the end of the book (something usual in this author). But here these explanations are rather too lengthy.
