Even if it takes an eternity, he will make amends...FATHER AND SON
Like any parent, Angel really wants to understand his son, Connor, but it's hard when life keeps getting in the way. Angel's overworked, Connor's embarrassed by his dad's taste for blood, and there are Hyconian demons running rampant through the streets of L.A. That doesn't leave a lot of time for bonding, especially when a gigantic monolith suddenly appears on Hollywood Boulevard.
Nobody knows what to think of the massive rock with two demon faces carved into its exterior. The news stations think it's an elaborate publicity stunt for a recently released movie, and religious extremists call it a sign of impending apocalypse. As Angel Investigations struggles to understand what the rock's appearance means, it becomes clear that Connor and Angel will have to work together in order to survive.

This is a smoothly written tie-in novel set during the fourth season of the Angel (the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off series) television show. The story focuses on the father-son relationship of Angel and Connor, and I thought Passarella handled it well, even though I never cared for the younger character on the show. The other characters all have their good moments, too, and the relationships and exchanges ring true, sometimes resulting in the main plot being a little too often overlooked or abandoned. A good one for fans... I enjoyed it the once but have no inclination to revisit it.
This was enjoyable and felt like it could be an episode of the show in spite of being improbably shoehorned into the small window of time between Angel's rescue from the ocean and Cordelia going evil. A monolithic structure has popped up in the middle of an L.A. street bearing two faces, a humanoid one on one side and a demonic one (not unlike Angel's vamp face) on the other. It's not quite in synch with this world.
It is a gateway to a demonic realm where the Summoner, with ties to Hollywood's movie makers, plans to usher in the next End of Days and set himself up as ruler on the new earth-bound hell. The usual players in their usual roles leap into action with Wes and Fred, with Cordy's help are on research duty. Lorne is out pounding the demonic pavement to see what he can find. Angel and Connor are the muscle and poor Gunn is left on look-out duty, surveilling the monolith.
And that factors into this. Gunn chafing under all the time Fred spends with Wes and him being dismissed as not quite smart enough to do anything in the research vein. This leads to unexpected and bad results for Gunn.
Angel and Connor's rocky relationship is also front and center, though there is some unevenness with how Connor is written, in one notable example, him deciding to do something then getting annoyed and not wanting to do it when Angel says it. Connor isn't an idiot when it comes to battle but okay. It was nice, however, having them work together at the end.
Many of these pro 'fanfics' can be uneven but this was one of the better Buffyverse tie-ins.
I enjoyed that book. It was a good tie-in novel. The characters were well done and in line with the TV show and the references to the events were accurate and added to the feel for the characters. The storyline was good and flowed easily. Overall it was a nice, quick, fun read. 4 stars.
Well, Buffy/Angel fanfics (and I count this as fanfiction, even though it's published, because it's not part of the show canon) are one of my guilty pleasures. They're not often as great as the show, but I do find a few gems. monolith isn't one of them, but it's still a fun read.
I did enjoy the Angel/Conner dynamic. I wasn't a huge fan of it on the show, mostly because I thought Conner was a whiny brat, but it was handled well in this book.
The story was quite bland, mostly because you know that nothing really bad can happen to the main characters because they have to go on and do all the things they do in the actual canon series. I did really enjoy the ending though. No real anxiety, but still entertaining. The double helix stairs and the eyes and the demons were all quite interesting.
All in all, a fair attempt and an enjoyable junk-food read.
