This book is so much better than expected. It’s a text book, thus it presents facts and they are not only stated in a simple manner but also wrapped around in suggestions to imagine where and how the knowledge can be applied.
The surprising part is that it explains the basics of the biological perspective of the human mind which gives an understanding on how a body works. This is useful in studying how we feel or interpret certain chemical changes in our organism or vice versa: what physical changes in the organism appear as results of emotions or external stressors.
Other useful points include:
- Explanations on performing surveys and studies; what can go wrong, how to make sure the data does not get distorted. - Different points of view to every topic by different theories and how that changed through years. - Entertaining bits such as article on how to teach a cat to use a toilet as an example of operant and classical conditioning. - References for further learning/research. - Convenient summaries at the end of each chapter.
TRIGGER WARNING: some parts might be slightly disturbing (such as descriptions of lobotomy and experiments on infants).
I have noticed that people scavenge psychology section for self-help books so I feel the need to stress that this is not a self-help book. It’s more entertaining than your average textbook but it is still primarily dedicated for learning purposes.

The audio version of this is as terrible as the book is great on its own. The narrator sometimes mispronounces a word that sighs probably trying to find the part of a text then starts reading a sentence again and bloopers like that are left on the audiobook. Other times the narrative is difficult to follow because there are no pauses between sentences (or for that matter between different parts of a chapter) and the intonation does not match the text at all.
Used this textbook for my general psychology course. One of the better psychology textbooks with review questions after each section or sections. Well written, however sometimes the textbook doesn't fully describe certain aspects of the subject. Nevertheless I am glad that I used this textbook for my general psychology class since its simple to use, I also bought the study guide that accompanies it and so glad I did, since my professor used questions straight from the study guide on our exams. This textbook is definitely best for general and or introductory courses.
