Three crazy, funny stories, featuring the two clumsiest talking mice you’ll ever meet… Shortlisted for the ROALD DAHL FUNNY PRIZE 2010‘The mouse started to trundle away, glancing at Howard over its shoulder, nervously. “You may well glance at me nervously," said Howard, picking up an empty water glass and placing it over the mouse. "You'll stay in there so I can eat my breakfast in peace. I shall deal with you afterwards…”’But you can't really deal with the Clumsies, afterwards or at any time. Once you've got them, you're stuck with them. From the moment when Howard Armitage first finds two talking mice under his desk – the inimitable and hilarious Purvis and Mickey Thompson – his life, and his belongings, are turned forever upside down.Obsessed with biscuits and forever playing incomprehensible games of their own devising, the Clumsies are not your average mice – and though they're desperate to help Howard get out of trouble with his evil boss, they're only really good for one thing……making a mess.

This is a short collection of stories involving main character Howard, who quickly learns that his office is occupied by two mice who like to cause trouble. He also has to deal with his unlikable boss, with many scrapes present throughout. I did find some of the humour funny. The story-line, in general, was quite basic, which is great for younger readers. However, I would have liked a little more length so that I could feel a stronger connection to the characters.

I think this is a really good book. It's funny, and yet it's interesting too. Ilike the two mice who destroy Howards life.

"The Clumsies Make a Mess" is a compendium of four short-ish stories in Sorrel Anderson's "Clumsies" series. The books tell the story of average worker Howard Armitage who befriends Purvis and Mickey Thompson - two mice who live in his office. A miniature elephant soon gets thrown in and all sorts of mishaps happen. Most of which include a threat of Howard losing his job from his boss Mr Bullerton.

The stories are told in a pretty simple fashion; they're easy to understand and easy to keep up with. Each story is pretty short and moves along at a fast pace, keeping the readers engaged. The simplicity of the stories mean that they are not particularly engaging for adult readers but, given that the stories aren't aimed at adults, this is not a problem. Anderson throws in enough jokes, silly moments and pictures of pants to make this a book that children will find funny and engaging.

The book is suitable for any children from the age of 6 or 7 up to around 11 or 12. I read it with a low ability reading group in Year 6 and they loved it but, owing to the language in the story and the storylines, I think Anderson meant for it to be for slightly younger readers than that. You could argue that not much actually happens in these stories but for children of this age that's not important as long as funny mishaps are going on. And when the Clumsies are involved there will always be mishaps!

Beautiful stuff and nonsense from Sorrell Anderson. Surreal and imaginative, the kind of thing that seems so easy to write, but in reality is perhaps hardest of all. Fours mini stories make up this book and the rest in the series. Little titbits of silliness perfect for reading aloud, or a quick giggle in between something more serious.

This was a lot of fun. I love that Howard is so resignedly accepting of talking mice, miniature elephants and so on. Everything can be solved with a cup of tea! This is a great read for children developing confidence with chapter books. There are so many wonderful descriptions and I love the photos and illustrations scattered throughout the book. Brilliant find.

I read this as a proof for the Waterstones Childrens Book Prize. It was a cute story for younger children but the story felt a little jumpy and didn't flow as a whole.

This is a funny laugh out loud read but, don't read if you don't like funny books it is like your strangeest dream with talking mice to dog size elephant.
