Why does Dean, the character that we follow through most of the book, have to be so disrespectful, judgmental, sexist, privileged and angry. I had to read through all the annoying stereotypes going through his brain, it was so painful. He's the definition on the self proclaimed « self made man » who won't acknowledge or realize how depend he is of other people. Every time the Tibetan lamas show up he insists on being a rude and ignorant asshole. He considers for moment having to be jobless but can't stand the thought of his wife paying the bills by herself. When he tells Lisa he wants to bring his son to Bhutan, she's like: but you don't know how to take care of your son, how's that going to happen? He goes anyway, and let's Jessie wander off alone without supervision and forgets he set a meeting time and place. What?

I get that he had to be an asshole so he could be « reformed » alright? But the trip and the magical realizations didn't change him as much as I'd hoped. He stayed an asshole.

I liked the premise and Jessie was cute and fun even though he was the stereotypical child who pulls his tongue at random things and says cryptic philosophical phrases at the right moment.

But who decided there should be a random chapter about a racist custom officer?

Ho ultimato ora questo bellissimo romanzo, di cui han fatto un film altrettanto bello; una favola moderna che ci fa avvicinare al buddismo: parla di un meraviglioso bimbo occidentale,Jesse, che, secondo alcuni monaci tibetani, potrebbe essere la reincarnazione del Lama Dorje, grande personaggio del buddismo, deceduto 8 anni prima! Per verificare questa ipotesi, due monaci orientali, partono dal lontano Bhutan per poter incontrare il bimbo, prenderlo e portarlo in Oriente! In questo modo, due mondi (Oriente e Occidente) si mescolano e si integrano a vicenda, impartendo dei valori molto saggi anche ai genitori di Jesse, inizialmente non molto credenti!

Interessante libro sul buddismo visto daun occidentale, che non riesce a inquadrarlo. La religione occidentale e quella orientale si incontrano per cercare di capire le persone.

Η ιστορία εξελίσσεται σε δύο παράλληλα επίπεδα αφήγησης. Το σύγχρονο επίπεδο όπου ένας νεαρός Βουδιστής μοναχός, ο Λάμα Νόρμπου, ταξιδεύει από το Μπουτάν στο Σιάτλ των ΗΠΑ, αναζητώντας τη μετενσάρκωση ενός μεγάλου δασκάλου, του Λάμα Δορτζέ. Οι ενδείξεις τον οδηγούν σε ένα εννιάχρονο αγόρι, τον Τζέσι Κόνραντ. Οι γονείς του Τζέσι, ο Ντιν και η Λίζα, είναι αρχικά σκεπτικιστές, αλλά σταδιακά πείθονται να ταξιδέψουν μαζί με τον γιο τους στο Μπουτάν για να εξακριβώσουν την αλήθεια. Στο ταξίδι μαζί τους βρίσκονται και άλλα δύο παιδιά από διαφορετικές χώρες, που ενδέχεται επίσης να είναι μετενσαρκώσεις.
Το ιστορικό επίπεδο όπου παράλληλα με τη σύγχρονη ιστορία, ξεδιπλώνεται η ζωή του Πρίγκιπα Σιντάρτα (του μελλοντικού Βούδα), από την πλούσια και προστατευμένη ζωή του στο παλάτι μέχρι τη στιγμή που εγκαταλείπει τα εγκόσμια, αναζητά τη φώτιση, έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με τον δαίμονα Μάρα (που αντιπροσωπεύει το εγώ) και τελικά γίνεται ο Βούδας.
Το έργο εξερευνά θέματα όπως η μετενσάρκωση, η φύση του πόνου, η φώτιση και η υπέρβαση του εγώ. Η ιστορία υπογραμμίζει την ιδέα ότι η σοφία του Βουδισμού είναι διαχρονική και μπορεί να βρει εφαρμογή ακόμα και στην πολυπλοκότητα της σύγχρονης ζωής.
Το ύφος γραφής είναι αφηγηματικό και παραστατικό, Η γλώσσα είναι απλή και προσβάσιμη , στοχεύοντας σε ένα ευρύ κοινό.
Το βιβλίο είναι απλώς μια μεταφορά της ταινίας σε κείμενο, χωρίς να προσθέτει κάτι ουσιαστικό σε σχέση με το οπτικό μέσο.
Σύσταση:Είχε ωραίο ρυθμό και δεν με κούρασε καθόλου .
