All the Ajin servants have special abilities. Except Rangetsu (Right?). When the curtain is finally pulled back on her brother’s murder, the fallout promises wide-ranging implications for just about everybody and it’s going to force Rangetsu to reckon with how she earned her position to begin with.

Some murder mysteries are more fait accompli than others and this is certainly one such story, which is actually fine. This isn’t trying to be, say, The Apothecary Diaries and Rangetsu’s talents don’t lie in her brilliant deductive reasoning skills.

When the solution to this is dropped into our leads’ lap, however, it can’t help but feel a little underwhelming. Less so for the culprit, which makes a certain amount of sense, but for the way it completely stomps all over the story’s entire premise.

That’s the first impression I had, at least, but this starts a pebble rolling and once that sucker starts building up a full head of steam it really goes to some places now that so much has been revealed.

Part of that is, indeed, Rangetsu’s ability, which ties into everything and also has been very obviously right there, seeded throughout the other volumes. The trick here was to just not listen to what characters were saying and look at what was happening.

What really got me about this sudden shift is that it changes the rather standard (but interesting) question of what price you would pay for revenge and then completely changes it to how you deal with the price you’ve paid if you never needed to do so in the first place.

Topping that all off, Rangetsu rightly has a total implosion when she realizes what she’s done and the weight of it all, leading to a scene that’s been many volumes in the making between her and Tenyou, and it was worth the wait.

Doubly so when it looks like one of the most ridiculous cliches in storytelling is about to be trotted out to drag this out even further and Rangetsu just lets her walls down and goes for it. It’s such a strong moment for her and shows what this relationship has come to mean.

Of course, given what we know of Ajin and their history in the palace, this is a very, very difficult path for these two to walk and it’s one that will only get even more dangerous once Rangetsu’s true gender is discovered (Tenyou still hasn’t figured it out and just doesn’t care, which is a rather sweet touch).

Basically it’s a masterclass in how to release tension and generate more tension and sow the seeds for further plotting. The panels that close out this volume promise that things might be even more complicated than they’ve already gotten, which is quite the feat.

And it does all this by taking the story in a direction that I didn’t think was as good as where it was heading previously, which is all I need to tell me that this author knows exactly what they want to say and how they intend to say it.

5 stars - this series just keeps on nailing it from volume to volume and you can’t ask for better than that. Such a good story.

Volume 6 of The King’s Beast revealed a lot! The dialogue was certainly interesting, but it was admittedly a bit of an info dump. There are a few twists in this volume that make it compelling, but I think overall it would have been better if some of this information had been sprinkled through previous and/or later volumes (Especially since most of the last volume was utter nonsense). Writing always feels a bit hollow when the reader is given new information on the heels of a conclusion. While this is not the final installment of this series, some queries characters and readers alike have been asking since the beginning of the story have been wrapped up and replaced with a whole new set of questions. I do like the twists in this story, and I’m interested to see where the narrative takes us from here.

As I have said from the beginning, I’m not a fan of the ill-conceived romance between Tenyou and Rangetsu, but those who are fan will probably be pleased with this volume. Forbidden romance wasn’t what interested me about this story. I have always been significantly more interested in Rangetsu’s drive and the lengths she might go to enact her revenge for the sake of her brother. But what if all of her sacrifices were for nothing? It’s a wild ride for both her and the reader as new information about Sogetsu comes to light. Circumstances being revealed as they truly are, offer a completely new perspective on Rangetsu’s reality. It’s intense and gripping. AND TOTALLY THE WRONG TIME TO KISS SOMEONE...Tenyou, read the room, buddy...but I digress. Overall it was an entertaining volume, but I can’t help feeling like it could have been so much better.

This was an amazing volume! Up until now, I viewed this series as a mid-tier shoujo with pretty art-enjoyable but not outstanding. This volume, however, has challenged that view. This volume had two incredible twists which I a) did not see coming and b) changed the whole direction of this series. This series may end up being darker, grittier and more political than I imagined, which I am all for. The romantic aspect of the series also picked up this volume and I'm excited to see how it will turn out.

(P.S Does Prince Tenyou remind anyone else of Xie Lian from Heaven Official's Blessing? The long hair and his sweet, positive attitude remind me a lot of him.)

I don’t even know how to start this but…IM SHOOKTH!! I was convinced that prince kougai’s Ajin and princess RinRin killed Sogetsu(still hate them both). But now ur telling me that he’s alive!?!? And it was the emperor who was behind everything. Ur also gonna tell me that not only Sogetsu but Rangetsu are potentially immortal. WHATT?!?! They threw like a million plot twists right after each other(not complaining). But I was not expecting this at all. I really liked this though cause it was def not expected.

This volume was amazing! But, what made it even better than it Alr was, was the development of Rangetsu and Prince Tenyou’s relationship. MY MANS CONFESSED, KISSED HER, AND EVERYTHING. Too good Istg. I love prince Tenyou sm but.. he’s kinda slow. Sir everyone and there moms have Alr figured out that she’s a girl. And mans still as clueless as ever. He’s rly smart but not when it comes to this. Im happy she didn’t pretend to not like him and ended up confessing as well. Cause I don’t want my mans to be heartbroken. Idc that it’ll be hard for them to be together bec he’s human and she’s an Ajin. She still shouldn’t lie to him abt her feelings. Cause I don’t need misunderstandings between them.

This volume was actually really really good. I’d give it a 100000/5. It might actually be my fav volume in the series. It had the plot twists. It also had the relationship development. Too good. Too good.

A shocking discovery about Rangetsu and Sogetsu is uncovered. Boku reveals the revelations, while Kougai searches for the truth. Secrets are hidden deep in the palace, and emotions are buried deep within a person's heart. Taihaku is wary of Rangetsu and Tenyou's obvious attraction towards each other, something that is forbidden. Emotions cannot stay trapped forever, and as time progresses their love will only grow. However, Sogetsu's death has haunted Rangetsu, and when there is a theory that there might be a chance to figure out what really happened, Rangetsu will take the chance. But there are many deadly variables that could ensue.

"We dress them up to serve at our sides. That's the intent behind having these robes made for him. And given that, I'd rather gift him something he looks good in. In no way, am I giving these clothes to him . . . to show him off like an object, or to flatter him. No . . . its not important how the giver feels about the gift. It's up to Rangetsu to decided how he receives it. I'll say no more. I hope you understand . . . how much I care for you."
-Tenyou's thoughts
"My robes aren't weird are they? I know I said I don't care what they look like, as long as they're easy to move around in yet . . . I'm still worried, about whether they look good . .. is he happy? We beast servants are bedecked like this so we can serve our masters. Not so long ago, I would have been disgusted by the very thought of that. But now more than anything . . . I'm happy to be standing by you."

-Rangetsu's thoughts
I've read forty-eight books since I last read The King's Beast. And I've missed the plot and its characters so much! It's been quite a stressful month, so reading The King's Beast volume seven really helped. On a random side-note, the cover makes Tenyou look like a pervert or just . . . odd in general, (although Rei Toma always has a nice art style) but this scene never actually happens *whew.

The King's Beast consistently keeps me interested despite not being the most action-packed. This is a political manga with darker aspects to the story. Rangetsu is a determined Ajin disguising herself as a man in order to become a beast servant for Prince Tenyou. Her love for Sogetsu was shown in only a couple of scenes that managed to capture so much.

"In this world fighting is like a show, almost like a board game. That's how I felt. As I laid my hands on a fellow Ajin. The job of Ajin men is to serve on active duty. That goes for the enemy forces as well. The ones fighting on the front lines are all Ajin. Ajin must hurt fellow Ajin. Used by humans, assigned positions they don't want and put their lives in danger. And as a result . . . you end up getting to know the enemy. The soldiers slack off when they can. While keeping up the appearance of army discipline. And under some unspoken agreement, they work in collusion with each other. All they care about is determining the winner. That is the secret rule . . . of Ajin that fight on the front lines. it helps make it easier to survive in this world . . . even if just a little looking scornfully at humans who give us commands from a high place. I thought . . . this was just like a game . . . but I had a purpose. I had to make a name for myself so that I could get as close to that place as possible. For on that that chair . . . a prince who was my enemy might one day sit in it. And when that happens being nothing but a foot soldier would get me nothing. They ordered us to engage in unnecessary fighting. Some commanders weren't satisfied with board game battles. For me . . . it was the perfect stage. I was able to defeat an enemy who had become careless under an unspoken rule. And make a name for myself. Not matter how much blood got on my hands. Even when it coated me so heavily that the weight of it never went away . . . I was fine with that. I had no reason to want to survive comfortably here. I just wanted to vent . . . to show off, and channel. This frustration, this loneliness, and this anger!"

Rei Toma is good at using a limited number of sentences or panels to stir an emotional connection between the reader and character. Rangetsu is a strong female protagonist. I love how she is perfectly capable of fighting for herself. But what really makes her strong is her ability to protect others, her stable moral compass, and the integrity that exists within her.

Tenyou is kind and caring, and someone who has grown to love Rangetsu. Taihaku and Rangetsu have by far one of my favorite dynamics. It was interesting to see Kougai grow some more humanity to his character. Despite taking a completely disgusting action in volume six, he is not entirely an inhumane person. He cares for Boku, and this really sheds some more light on his better aspects.

Excited to pick up volume eight!

Rangetsu's new uniform is finished, and the design is not helping when it comes to hiding any femininity as it seems to draw it out and be a more feminine design overall. Things come to a peak on several fronts given this new information regarding Sogetsu (both his previously conceived death and now this likely conclusion that he's still alive), Rangetsu actually having an Ajin power after all (and stronger than Sogetsu's same gift), and Tenyou confesses his feelings in such a direct manner, it's impossible for even Rangetsu to misunderstand this time.

E come reagirà?

I was so lost with this since it was a while ago I read vol 6 but as soon as everything clicked into place it made soooo much sense. I remembered everything after she poke-evolved 🤣

But brooo this is getting so good!! I wasn’t expecting any of this and I am baffled.

MORE! I WANT MOREEE!!

I can’t tell if taihaku likes Rangetsu from the way he looks at her, but he’s the prince’s servant or something andddd it’s so cute tho. Idk

Prince Tenyou reminds me of Jinshi from Apothecary Diaries. He’s got the same funny characteristics going on like him. Ahhh they’re both adorable

I honestly would've never seen this twist coming. I really like that the mystery is going in unexpected ways that keeps you on your toes. I also like the fact that Prince Tenyou is aware of the status difference between him and Rangestu, and is trying to consciously confess his feelings while not making her feel pressured. It just makes me like him all the more, he's so adorable. Can't wait to see what happens when he finds out Rangestu is a girl.

Començament d'infart pel que fa a resoldre el misteri de la mort del germà bessó, la trama fa un gir inesperat, certs personatges revelen informació que et deixa amb un pam de nas, hi ha acció, sentiments a flor de pell i confessions!!! :3

Definitely better than the last book. The plot twist was intriguing, but the story is going in a weird direction… If he doesn’t find out she’s a woman soon, I will have some complicated feelings.

Content warnings: Blood, child abuse, classism, drug use, grief, injury/injury detail, kidnapping, panic attacks/disorders, sexual content (a man and a woman kiss, but he believes she is a boy), slavery, and violence.

There are a load of twists in this one and FINALLY they both admit their feelings 🩵 I feel like this is the start of a new ARC especially with the information we find out about Sogetsu, Rangetsu's twin brother and former beast servant to Prince Tenyou. Tenyou still doesn't know about Rangetsu being a female Ajin, but I have a feeling Tenyou wouldn't care as much either way. I'm curious about Taihaku's 'attachment' to Rangetsu. Is it romantic or more sibling-like feelings?

Besides the awkwardness of the force drinking the poison seeming a little sexualized.
I do enjoy that Prince Tenyou is aware of the power imbalance and sexual harassment he could be under, but I also really enjoy his little flustered smile. What a cute prince!

Lots of little twists in this one, again I feel its so rushed together, I would have liked to savor them a little of 'could this be' before the truth was revealed.

The previous volume wasn’t what I was expecting, but this one! This one takes the whole freaking cake!

Volume 7 feels like the pre-climax of the story, revealing new insights into Sogetsu’s death and completely reshaping the understanding we had of the story thus far. Honestly, I could barely put this down once I started.

Also, Rangetsu's new outfit? It's so beautiful 😍

Oh... and we're finally getting some actual romance. I'm excited. Onwards we go!

The King's Beasts!!

Is Sogetsu alive? Seriously? I am dying here.
And Rangetsu, So much happening in this volume. Rangetsu was not supposed to have any powers and he/she. I think Rangetsu was blindsided by them.
This is getting SOOO GOOD! I Can't wait to see the next volume!
Super highly recommended!
