Another of Lynda Chance’s old western with an uber dominant and agro-possessive H, and a virginal h who might have some ideas of independence but pretty soon gives up.
The h escapes a stagecoach robbery and worse at the hands of outlaw bandits, and gets rescued by a dark and dangerous rancher who takes her home. He goes all possessive and domineering over her dictating where she can go on the ranch and what she can do. And basically being a total jerk if she ‘disobeys’. He desires her but is not willing to marry for it. Thinking her a widow, he considers her fair game.
And she wasn’t very endearing anyways with her confused and confusing ways. She misleads him on the widow issue and also hides her old limp as an injury.
He grudgingly offers her marriage after getting to know of her v status the time tested way, and then the story just abruptly winds up. One minute he is being his usual a-hole self and next they are rolling around on the ground and professing undying love.

Lynda Chance writes a powerful domineering male alpha. If you like those, you'll enjoy this book.
22 yr old Emma grew up in an orphanage, and is on a stagecoach to her new life as a seamstress in Denver. The stagecoach is robbed, driver murdered, and Hero Luke Butler finds her hiding near the scene in the early evening. As a witness, Emma can ID the robbers. Luke takes her to his ranch for safekeeping, where the sparks fly, attraction blooms, and most of the book occurs.
Luke is VERY attracted to Emma, but is conflicted for several reasons. But one thing is for sure in his mind- the young widow is sexually available. Oops!
Emma has a limp from a childhood injury, and she lets Luke think she sprained her ankle, so he doesn't treat her as an untouchable handicapped woman. Also, she tells him she's widowed, instead of never-married. These two lies come back to haunt her in the story.
An overbearing but caring hero and an assertive heroine make for many combustible scenes. There is quite a bit of smoldering extended foreplay in several entertaining scenes. The sex is HOT, passionate, AND loving.
I think the reason I was able to enjoy this book more than others with similar heroes is because it was an historic romance, late 1800's and sex roles and expectations allowed the dominant male role as the norm. This type of hero set in today's time period might find himself slapped, either with a hand or a restraining order.
This is possibly my favorite Lynda Chance book thus far.

"Is there something wrong?"
"No. Not unless you want all your clothes ripped from your body and me deep inside you within thirty seconds."
Within that week, well barely a week they've had some hot make out sessions then during the 80% mark he's popped her cherry without him knowing she's a virgin, as soon as he's realised that he's saying that they have to get married the next day.
"You can't marry me when all you feel is anger toward me." She tried to reason with him.
"Oh, I can, Emma," he softly threatened. "I've told you before, I can do any damn thing I want. You've made your bed and now you have to lie in it." His knee pushed her legs wider, and his manhood nudged threateningly at the entrance to her body
He sounds so rapey
The he asks her "Are you too sore?"
and of course she's ready for round two
This book was so awkward at times, Emma came off as sooo naive she seemed like a 10 year old and the guy seem like her pervey uncle, with him calling her 'honey' 'baby' and 'Emma-girl'
Emma's mind raced as she thought of the warm, thick liquid and she came to a conclusion. "That was--that was the seed? The seed that makes a baby?"
Shes 22 by the way.
Some more sex scenes and they live happily ever after. Epilogue they have a bunch of kids.

I’ve had this book sitting in my TBR forever and since I had bought the book, I finally decided to push thru and read it. I’d avoided it due to the first chapter, where right outta the gate, the hero is musing that he had his “personal needs” taken care of by one of the local STD-trap whores at the town saloon. Sexy😑
It wasn’t a terrible story. The heroine is the lone survivor of an attack on her stagecoach from thrives. The hero rescues her and takes her back to his ranch. The hero was rough, crude, ruthless, but also protective and possessive of the heroine and it was her gentleness and innocence that both scared him and drew him in, eventually taming him.
Safe-ish. Hero’s past is mentioned a few times. Heroine is a virgin, belongs only to her hero and gives him the gift of claiming all of her first (even if he doesn’t realize it at first.) no others, no cheating or sharing or abuse. HEA with epilogue years out.

A sweet western about a rancher who falls for a sweet orphan involved in a stagecoach robbery. She was stronger then everyone thought and he was surprised by her fortitude. Cute and with a sweet little epilogue. A satisfying read.

The heroine did some foolish things to show she was independent.
The romance was too much slow burn.
The ending was rushed.
I did love the epilogue so I gave it 4 stars just for including that.

⤅ If you want simple, uncomplicated alpha male heroes and simple, uncomplicated plot lines, Lynda Chance is perfect.
Her writing isn't fabulous - sometimes the prose can be seriously overblown - but this one wasn't too bad. 22-year-old Emma Martin was travelling through Colorado when her stagecoach was set upon by bandits; though they left her alive, she's been abandoned alone in the wilderness. In rides 30-year-old rancher Luke Butler. He's delighted to find that the survivor is a pretty little bundle of femininity (as all Chance heroines are) and whisks her away to his ranch. Since she tells him she's a widow, she's fair game. But of course it isn't long until he wants more.
This is only a novella - about 50k words - and, to Chance's credit, she doesn't try to pack anything more taxing into the plot than Luke and Emma's romance. It's fairly fast-paced, almost entirely free of drama, and saturated with bucketloads of insta-lust. Not always my cup of tea, but this time it went down easy.

Read this one in one sitting. Lynda Chance is amongst my favourite authors with her own style of Dominant, hot Males. Although this is a good read it however fell short when compared to some of her other books.
Emma Martin, the heroine is a likeable sweet character who is pretending to be a widow and Luke Butler a ranch owner who takes Emma in after the stagecoach she was travelling in was robbed. A likeable read but something was missing for me in this one.

Yeah, and Luke was a total jerk for most of the story. I kept reading, hoping that it would get better, it just ever did.

I was unaware that the entire plot of this book would be whether or not she slept with him and what he would do if/when he found out she was a virgin and not an experienced widow. I thought some other events would be happening to keep the story exciting and that would just be a small part of it. But, no, I was wrong. 😑
The hero was everything I love: dominant, overtly masculine, OTT jealous and possessive, so I really can’t complain too much. I just would have loved to see more opportunities for him to exhibit those qualities through conflict than was allotted to him as the story is written. The heroine was insecure and unsure of herself because of a permanent limp she has as a result of an injury from her childhood and she is constantly thinking that a man wouldn’t want her because of it. That was a little silly, but I did appreciate her innocent viewpoint on all matters even if it did include her naive belief that a limp could make her undesirable to any lone man in the west. 🥴
This was a quick read that was easy to digest and scorching in all aspects of spice.🌶️
Would recommend if you like innocent heroines becoming the object of obsession to OTT jealous/possessive heroes.🫶
Oh and it DOES have an epilogue, so that’s a plus. 👍

Another very entertaining Old West historical short novel from an author who rarely disappoints. Certainly she is a writer who crafts her heros on the dominant, gritty, edgy side, and this story is no exception. The heroine is typical of many women in the Old West who are alone and without family or resources, trying to survive on very limited employment skills. That she is masquerading as a widow is another common ploy to prevent strangers from viewing her as both a "loose woman" and a woman on the loose. It is a strange love story that is rooted in lust as so many marriages were in the days of plentiful men and limited women. It is also a love story that is really about dominance and submission and the ways that male/female relationships were largely cast in the "old days." But all that being said, it was a delightful and entertaining read and one that brought that historical period in Colorado to life. I really thought it was a terrific read.

Pretty good read. I liked it but it didn't really keep my attention and took days to read. The heroine was likaeble for the most part but she lied entirely too much and even though I like my Heroes alpha this one was just a bit too much IMO.

This is another prime example of an alpha-male, arrogant , super jealous/possessive hero paired with a shy, virginal heroine who he rescues. He saves her, takes her to his ranch and immediately begins a pattern of seduction. I enjoyed the story and the slow build up to both sex and the ultimate "I love you." If you want an OTT jealous/possessive hero, this author always delivers.

This is a sweet story with a lot of sexual tension and build up.
Luke is a typical Lynda Chance alpha hero (which I love.) and Emma is sweet without being a doormat.

Somehow the whole jealous alpha male thing didn't work so well in this historical by LC. Part of the fun of the super jealous hero is seeing him react to other men near the heroine. Here there just wasn't enough to carry that. Plus the physical relationship didn't ring true. The hero's motivations weren't solid enough for me.

i usually like books by lynda chance. it's usually a 3 star read from me 4 her but this one was rather kind of dumb n slow paced. i had 2 skip pages. the hero actually seem like the villain n really a pervert lol:P

March 2025 = 2.5 stars (pretty good)
This is the only book by Lynda Chance that I was able to finish, and I've tried several. The short length really helped; if it had been longer, I probably would've lost interest like I did with the others. I appreciated the portrayal of the H as a strong, masculine figure—refreshingly different from the softer portrayals often seen today.
Two lonely orphans are drawn to each other. Lust leads to love, two medium-steam sex scenes, and then a epilogue showing their HEA five-years later.
This reads like a Harlequin romance. The chemistry between Luke and Emma was kindled when he rescued her, and brought her to his remote ranch in the heart of Colorado. Luke, a rugged rancher shaped by a hard life, conceals a tender heart beneath his tough exterior—he is fiercely protective and possessive. As their connection deepens, his strong desires surface, and he soon introduces Emma to the world of passion through lingering kisses. Despite the opportunity to leave, Emma makes the conscious choice to stay, drawn not only to Luke's strength but also to the undeniable bond forming between them.

She's small, fragile and beautiful-but-doesn't-know-it. She excels at domestic tasks like cooking and cleaning. Sweet and innocent, she's also feisty and unafraid to speak her mind.
The plot centers around the MCs' relationship issues, and the sexual tension that builds between them. There are only two minor characters: Reed the sheriff, and Maria the housekeeper. Other than a brief scene of Emma walking into a rattlesnake den, there is no action.

➊ Her limp isn't from a twisted ankle, but from a badly broken leg after falling out of a tree years ago. She allows Luke to believe the lie because he treats her with kindness instead of pity.
➋ She’s actually a virgin, not a widow. The matrons at the orphanage advised her to use this deception to travel alone more easily, as marriage seems unlikely for her. She lets Luke think she's a widow to avoid being forced to leave, knowing his code of honor prevents him from seducing a virgin.

This was a solid, slow burn read for me. Both the main characters had difficult childhoods and shaped them into who they have become today and the choices they’ve made. Luke is overly protective of shy, sweet Emma, but we do see some backbone from her come through. They have their sweet moments of playing games together that warmed the read up. It was very slow the first 70% of the book and then the last 20-30% felt rushed to me. I did appreciate that we got to see their future, albeit short, was a great touch!

Second book I read from LC and I think Ima read em all! All the usual ticks that work for me. Really Enjoyed This
This book has more substance and heart than the name implies. Luke is very domineering, but in a sexy way. I was relieved that this book wasn't a domestic discipline or beam book, because I find those books annoying and tiresome. Emma was a very sweet, delicate young lady. They had a nice chemistry.
