The Blessing Giver #1

The Blessing Giver

Rate this book
Their magic is divided. Protected with a purpose. Some see light… Some see only darkness… In order to uphold a delicate balance of power, the two bloodlines shall never mix. Paladin never thought much of being a Balancer. It was what he was born to be; it was his destiny. But, when he finally accepts his consecration and awakens his power, he discovers destiny has other plans… Rayelle has taken longer than most Blessing Givers to reach her consecration and receive her sight. She’s dedicated her entire life to the Prophecy and Order. There is no other way, only the way of the Goddess. But when Paladin is banished from his enclave, Rayelle sees a vision she can’t purge from her mind. Mixed blood. Forbidden. Fate has thrown Paladin and Rayelle together for a reason, but the more questions Rayelle asks, the further she falls from the truth she’s been taught. If the Order is right about him…her heart is dangerously wrong. The Blessing Giver is an enemies-to-lovers, tantalizing forbidden romance. For fans of Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer Armentrout, this new fantasy series will leave you breathless. Scroll up and click BUY NOW or READ FOR FREE to begin the series today!

Note: this book was sent to me by the author as a gift, with no requirement or expectation of a review.

To be honest, the title of this book gave me some trepidation. “Blessing” has a specific connotation to me, and I didn’t want to read something with overly religious messaging or overtones. Instead, the book explores the distinction between religion and faith, doctrine and truth. Secondarily, the story wrestles with the theme of integration: light cannot exist without dark, all power has potential for good and evil. These are ambitious themes, difficult to ground. I think the series can nail it with enough time and attention.

While I found the plot to be predictable, and the pacing to be inconsistent at times, the characters, world-building, and magic system hooked me, and I flew through this! This world’s political religion was well-developed and explained, and I’m interested to continue reading the series to find out more about the factions, herbalists, and areas in this world. The elixirs, fount, and auras are also fascinating. Rayelle and Paladin are a couple you can really root for, and the forbidden aspect of their love made the ride so fun.

I found the villains to be truly despicable, and frighteningly capable, which is what we want as readers! As the series continues, I’m excited to see both the heroes and villains engage with higher and greater stakes beyond the personal. These greater stakes are hinted at in book one, but each character was pretty insularly focused in this first book.

Overall, without spice, I think this book may appeal more to fantasy romance readers that love the YA genre, or fantasy readers that like the romance to be more of a subplot.

This was fantastic! I was pulled in immediately. Can’t wait to begin Book 2 of this series.

Plot- great pacing, plot and world building. This has a strong fantasy religious theme. The magic was interesting.

Characters- loved both the FMC and the MMC. Supporting characters were few but well done.

Romance & chemistry- best part, of course. Forbidden romance, forced proximity, “did he hurt you” tropes were all awesome. Super high chemistry. By the end, their romance is complete which is why I was THRILLED to find out that the 2nd book of the duology, The Herbalist, features a supporting character as the new FMC. What a great idea so the reader gets to relish a new, fresh romance. Yes, high romantic tension is very important to me. Haha!

Writing- well done. Some little instances of slightly confusing writing, but nothing that pulled me out of the book.

Cliffhanger- plot, yes; romance, no.

Content-
Language: no swearing
Spice: 1.5 sex scenes that were tastefully done. The second one was fade to black and I can’t remember if the first one was. Either way, no explicit wording while still being hot. Kudos to the author.

Narration- fantastic. Listened to this on Everand (used to be called Scribd) and also read some of it on KU.

How I rated this series-
The Blessing Giver- 5 stars (Rayelle & Paladin)
The Herbalist- 3.5 stars (Mel & Rhodric)
The Diviner - 5 stars (Bella & Gerrish)
The Balancer - 1.5 stars (Aedra & Brion)

*Even though I didn’t enjoy the last book in this series, I loved the 1st and 3rd books and I think it’s worth reading 1-3 for sure!
I enjoy this author and think she can write a great romance, so I’ll def read her other books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.5 stars - I am so grateful I stumbled upon this masterpiece. After reading a Rom-Com from this author I had a hankering for some fantasy. I saw this book and thought, “What the heck”….I’d never read any of this authors fantasy books before so I had no expectations going into this one. This novel had me dumbfounded. It was absolutely amazing! 🤩

THE PLOT - INCREDIBLE! I mean enemies to lovers, forbidden romance, with a hint of a fated mates trope. There’s intrigue, a quest, dangerous secrets to uncover, magic, Need I say more?

THE WORLD BUILDING -CAPTIVATING. C.G knew exactly how to detail the magic system and political intrigue without making the story drag. It was captivating enough to imagine the scenes but simple enough to keep me hooked. Not once did I struggle to understand what was going on (the audiobook probably helped with that also) 😉

THE CHARACTERS - LOVEABLE. I loved the characters. Paladín and Reyelle were perfectly written. Early on we get a good grasp on the types of persons they are but as the story unfolded we saw them both change and push themselves to see beyond what they were always taught. To uncover the truth. I loved getting to know them and seeing their character growth. Even the side characters (soon to be main characters) were vivid and engaging.

I’m excited that the next in the series is Mel’s story but I look forward to seeing glimpses of Paladin and Reyelle and seeing how the plot further develops.

CONTNET
Romance: PG-13 Clean, Steamy kisses, Groping, Fade to black.
Violence: Moderate
Language: Mild

The Value of a Star: Ratings Explained

The Blessing Giver
By: Cindy Gunderson
My Rating: Four out of Five Stars
Best for: 18 and up

A fun start to a fun story!

You know I'm picky about my kissing books. I'm not going to commit my time to one unless I'm certain I'm going to enjoy it. Cindy Gunderson hasn't let me down yet, so when she writes a kissing book, I'm going to read it.

I'm glad I did, and Cindy's win streak continues!

The Blessing Giver is the first installment of an upcoming fantasy trilogy. It's got all the stuff--mastering magical powers, fulfilling prophecies, unraveling mysteries, and navigating through traditions masquerading as truths. Alongside the intricate plot are parents with dubious motives, heroes striving to grow into their power, and villains needing to be stripped of theirs. Let's see...anything else? Are there any other necessary ingredients? Oh. Yes...

Love. Forbidden love. Enemies-to-lovers love.

Some prefer their books to be about the adventure, with a dash of loving. [Hand raised]. Other's like their books to be about loving and include a dash of adventure. The Blessing Giver firmly belongs on the "Romance First" shelf, and if that's your preference, you'll be thoroughly delighted. You can expect ample yearning, hesitating, second guessing, and desiring--leading to LOTS of loving and kissing and...well...you know.

I enjoyed the adventure and appreciated the love story in The Blessing Giver. There was no profanity or violence, and the intimate scenes were more emotionally descriptive than physically descriptive, but you definitely know what was happening. I wouldn't be comfortable reading those scenes out loud with my teenagers, which is my personal barometer for measuring sexual content. I say The Blessing Giver is best for 18 and up.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the story!

Happy Reading!

*****Non-Spoiler Review*****

Note: I was sent a copy of this by the author and I am so thankful for her generosity! I’m excited to read the next book in this series along with the other books she has written.

Synopsis: Rayelle is a soon-to-be consecrated Blessing Giver who has taken longer than normal to receive her sight. As is tradition, she received both a blessing and a curse at birth. Her blessing promised that she would restore what was lost and bring the people of her faith back to the truth. Her curse stated that she would be betrayed by the person she loved the most.

Paladin is a Balancer who discovers on his consecration day that he has mixed blood—that of a Balancer AND a Blessing Giver—which is considered an abomination in the Order and calls for his death.

Together, Rayelle and Paladin embark on a journey that will hopefully help them learn the truth of a prophecy that could spell their ruin or salvation.

Review: I enjoyed reading this book! The religion and the magic of the world were so inventive and unlike anything I’d ever read before. As someone who gone through a faith crisis/restructuring, I found Rayelle’s arc to be very relatable and real. This is marketed as an enemies-to-lovers book, but I personally thought it read it as more of a forbidden romance. There is great chemistry between the two main characters and they share some really sweet and special moments.

I gave this book three stars because while I enjoyed reading it, it felt like some events in the book were rushed while others were a bit too long. Rayelle was very contemplative but also tended to ask herself the same questions over and over. I wished that her character could’ve caught on the things a little quicker.

Overall, I think this is a fun book that many lovers of fantasy romance will read and enjoy!

CLASIFICATION: 3.8 ESTRELLAS

The Blessing Giver is an great adult fantasy romance!

I am very partial to stories where the Main Character,  Rayelle in this case, are knowledgeable about the magic and the politics before the book begins.  Rayelle knows the expectations and the beliefs of the world, even though she struggles with it, she is an excellent person for the reader to be with for worldbuilding.  And when she begins to question, it's easy to see uow the world has been cultivated and controlled to prevent questions from being answered.

I liked Paladin. I liked how he is introduced to the story, and how his personality  came through . I really liked him at the end! Although this story is mostly from Rayelle's POV, I liked the chapters from his POV. It was great to meet him

I really liked the plot. I loved books that question authority, and question religion. I am also always a fan of forbidden love- and the end of the book hints that found family may be in the future, which I really look forward too!

There were a few points where I felt like the story was a bit slow - but I think it's just because I wanted to know how the book ended and wanted to rush there 🤣

I am interested to see Rayelle in the next book move to the next stage of her journey. She's begun questioning the orders that the higher religious officials pass down- and now will seek her own answers and solutions. I look forward to seeing what she finds!

TW -- sexual assault

TW// mention of still birth -A major part of this world is about giving birth - and in the world of The Blessing Giver,  Stillbirths are explained by the Goddess determining you unfit to be a couple/ have a child.  This was a fairly throw away line for this book, and I am not sure if /how it will come into play in the future . However I wanted to high light this line in my review, because i can see it being triggering for others

Romantic Fantasy is definitely not the genre I immediately gravitate towards, but I couldn't help but pick up The Blessing Giver. I was so happy I did! Gunderson does such an amazing job of balancing fantasy world building with the romantic plot.

What resonated with me the most about the book was Rayelle's inner conflict, and how she had to try to come to terms with the fact that the world might not be as black and white as she'd been led to believe. There is a lot of questioning of faith, and rebelling against an established order in order to push past prejudices and preconceived notions.

And if romance is more your vibe, don't worry, there is plenty of romantic tension between Rayelle and Paladin for those who are looking for a good forbidden romance story as well.

I highly recommend this book - please do yourself a favour and check it out!

I was gifted this book by the author in a book box - so, first off, thank you to authors who send PR boxes to the little guys!

I really enjoyed this story! Took me a bit to initially get my head around the world and magic in this story, and that's only bc I'm not a veteran fantasy reader, but afterwards I got super into the story and the characters!

The story definitely makes the reader consider their own faith, and the consequences that could come from having blind faith.

The characters were interesting and I'm looking forward to learning more about them! This is the first book in a series, so it doesn't wrap anything up nearly, but it definitely leaves you looking forward to more!

This read was of medium difficulty in the fantasy genre. Since it was the first of a series, there were quite a few situations where the author went into world building which is understandable to set context helping to explain the workings of the fantasy world. However, this was sometimes difficult to listen through as sometimes it was long and I was forgetting the new terminology introduced but I powered through.
Persistent themes throughout the whole book that stood out really quickly to me were classism and blood purity. Although these are common themes, they remind me of several classic/popular works I have recently including Harry Potter and works by Shakespeare.
I listened to the book at x1.25 speed.

*Disclaimer: I received a digital copy of this book in order to give my honest review *

Plot without spam:

Rayelle just became a Blessing Giver, a person in charge of giving two blessings to every baby the day they are born. These blessings are kind of predictions of something good to come.

Rayelle feels great pressure because of her own blessings and the high expectations of their parents, who are at the top of the Order. But she finds comfort in her faith and in Shamir, her guide and former friend of her mother.

However, her world and faith will stagger when she meets Paladin, half Blessing Giver half Balancer, a balancer being the one who gives a curse to every baby, a prediction of something bad.
Paladin is an abomination, a result of breaking the law of not mixing the blood lines, and the promise of the terrible day of Sedoni return becoming close.

Rayelle will have to find the real meaning of the prophecies regarding Ariathne and Sedoni, and decide whether or not to trust Paladin, even if it means her own curse becoming true.

Review:

First of all. I liked the world building. It’s easy enough to comprehend. A magic system well define. Also, the religious/ political conflict it’s relatable to the real ones we experience in our lifes.
The only thing hard to understand were the prophecies and religious texts. They were too ambiguous. It may be the author tried to make it sound more mystic, or tried to write it with broad meaning so it adapts to the plot. But to be fair, English is my second language, so it can be just me. ( I’ll take this moment to apologize for grammar or spelling mistakes I may incur in.😅)

The relationship between Rayelle and Paladin, was well done. Very sweet with just enough conflict in the right moments. Like in the beginning , when they don’t really know each other so the lack of trust was well justify. You shouldn’t just trust someone right off the bat.
The other conflict between them is near the climax of the plot. Initially, I thought it was kind of dumb, but if you consider Rayelle’s curse and her fear of it, it makes perfect sense (trauma, am I right?)

Paladin was not perfect, but I would like to see a little bit more of flaws in him, just to make him more real. On the other hand, I was happy to make notice of the lack of toxic masculinity. It wasn’t write in a "in your nose" kind of way, like “notice me I’m so current and a hip author”. It was more like: normalize this behavior.

Paladin is respectful and protective. He desires her but waits for Rayelle to make the decisions and give consent with her actions and words, without killing the moment (take note people).

Finally Rayelle. Insecure, great faith, fear of connection, wanting to make her mother proud of her, and always following her gut (although not always right). The center plot it is faith, not in religion but in ourselves. Rayelle learns that what she sees, feels and believes is always more important over the expectations of others, even the most important person in your life. Stuck to your convictions and you would be in the right path.

The Blessing Giver is a romantasy that starts with a deceptively soft title and quickly reveals there’s a lot more weight sitting underneath it than you first expect.

There’s something quietly unsettling about the concept at the heart of this story—this idea of blessings being given, taken, or controlled, and what that does to the people caught in it. It creates a strange mix of beauty and unease that runs through the entire book. Nothing feels completely safe or pure, even in moments that are meant to be tender.

The romance has that slow, slightly fragile build where every interaction feels like it could either heal something or break it further. I liked the emotional tension between the characters, especially when trust starts to form in a world where trust feels risky. There’s a nice push-and-pull dynamic that keeps you engaged, even when the story leans into quieter stretches.

That said, there were moments where I wanted more bite—more edge in the emotional conflict and a stronger sense of consequence behind certain choices. The setup is really intriguing, but at times it feels like it’s holding itself back from fully leaning into the darker potential of its own premise.

The pacing is steady but uneven in places, with slower sections that focus on setup and emotional development, and faster moments where bigger reveals happen quite quickly. It makes the reading experience feel a little stop-start at times, even though the core idea remains compelling.

Overall, The Blessing Giver is an interesting, atmospheric start to the series with a strong romantic foundation and a concept that hints at darker depth beneath the surface. It didn’t quite reach a five-star for me because I wanted more intensity and sharper emotional stakes, but it still sits comfortably at a four-star read with a lot of potential moving forward.

Wow oh wow! 8/10 stars for me, but on the basic app stars they give it'll be a 5/5! I'm new to fantasy/sci-fi books and wow! This was SO good. I absolutely love Paladin & Rayelle SO much! They started out so confused & concerned & knowing what they had been raised to believe was cut & dry in their belief systems & even through the concerns & worry & what was supposed to be against all odds, found strength in each other, searched out the truth & decided to step out of the normal for them & sacrifice what had to be sacrificed to seek their truths. The character development was so good, in my opinion. I absolutely devoured this book & found my heart racing & on the edge of my seat so many times wondering what was going to come next & who to root for & who to be leery of! I absolutely loved the found family dynamic & the ending left me with my mouth open! I cannot wait to start the next book! Came into this book unsure of what I'd think especially not typically being a fantasy type of reader & it had me hooked from chapter 2 on! I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends who like this style of book! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily... but with that being said, you bet your boots I'll be buying the physical books to add to my bookshelf because I absolutely will be reading this one again and in the near future! 😊 ugh! The ending had a hold on me & now I'm going to sit and stew over how much I enjoyed this book!
