Wondering why it and other pine trees are being so carefully tended, a little tree offers shelter to a dove during a storm and begins to grow crookedly as a result, ruining its chances of becoming a Christmas tree. Original.
Very sweet book about a spruce tree who shelters an exhausted dove during a storm. She proceeds to lay her eggs there, and baby birds eventually hatch. But due to his act of kindness, the tree grows crooked ... and being on a Christmas Tree Farm, that isn't a handy thing to have happen. But all's well that ends well, and you'll have to read the book to find out how it ended well!
One of the books in my daughter's Christmas collection.
During a storm a dove looking for somewhere to lay her eggs asks for and gets shelter from a small Christmas tree on a Christmas tree farm. The tree happily shelters her and her children but in doing so his trunk grows crooked and no one wants to use him in their houses. All of his friends are cut down and taken away and he spends a very lonely winter all on his own. The dove brings her family back to visit an then eventually the tree is dug up and replanted in a garden with many other trees around him. The trees are not friendly to him and look down on him but when winter comes he is the only tree that is still green and the people that live in the house decorate him with ligts and baubles. On Christmas Eve people gather round to sing around his trunk and the dove comes back and alights on the top of him. His kindess means he will be able to live for many years in the garden without being chopped down.
The paper creations that form the illustrations for this book are beautiful and very well crafted and the story is heartwarming and novel.
A heartwarming story of a little Christmas tree growing on a tree farm, wondering what Christmas is all about and imagining what it would be like to be in a home with a happy family, being decorated and celebrated.
On a cold and stormy night, a dove and her children land on this little tree and ask to be shielded from the storm as they are far from home.
A nest was made for her eggs and for several weeks the little tree gathered all his strength and branches to shelter them from the natural elements. After some time, the tree developed a hump on his trunk and was no longer growing straight. The farmer stopped tending to the tree and was very disappointed that this little tree was now less than perfect.
The dove and her family eventually flew off to their home. Christmas came and went, no one bought the little tree and he was left all alone on the farm. Eventually moved to the yard of the farmers house. Initially shunned by the other trees in his new environment but come Christmas time, the family comes out to decorate, celebrate and sing around the little crooked Christmas tree.
The dove came back and encouraged the little tree saying "This is your reward. For many years to come, you will stand proudly in this garden, and every Christmas you will be decorated like this and surrounded by love." The little tree now knew what the joy of Christmas is all about.
The only reason this book has 4 stars and not 5 is because I felt it was a bit wordy, could have been more succinct. Love the message and Ron Broda's paper art work is gorgeous.
I hope Michael Cuttings loved ones read reviews sometimes. I tried to find him today and was sad to see he had passed away.
I purchased my first copy of this book about 30 years ago from a school book fair. I loved the story as a child, I would always cry every time I read it.
My copy is in near perfect condition and I always planned on giving it to my daughter one day. This year is my daughter’s first Christmas and all of my books are in storage for another year or so. So I tracked down another copy of The Little Crooked Christmas Tree for her.
This book is beautiful in both story and illustration. Showing that kindness can be rewarded.
I hope one day I may be lucky enough to pass my copy on to my grandchildren.
Tasha, thank you for making this book possible. I hope it stays one of my family’s favourites for generations.
A beautiful story about appreciating nature, even if it's not all perfect. This story covers the importance of Christmas to Christians and what it means to have a Christmas tree. The slightly longer narrative allows the reader to become fully immersed in the story. I think this book would be good to use with lower KS2. The illustrative style is also really interesting, looking like lots of paper but outs stuck onto a background to create layers and depth. Children could try this in class to create similar images, which they could use to create their own story book.
