Kyapoya makes the history of this vast ancient continent seems easy to learn. Scholarly but easy to read. Covers all the major points. He keeps it pretty factual but sometimes weaves in an opinion. I personally would have liked to see more of his opinions expressed especially during the colonialism period. But, that is not the nature of this book.
I learned tons.

Highly recommend. Very insightful on African cultures and traditional social structures. Very informative on African history from ancient times to 1990. Does a fantastic job of acknowledging the incredible diversity of the continent while also weaving specifics into a larger narrative that makes sense of the whole. Not a light or quick read, but so worth it.
I wish this book was more easily available.
