Rod Campbell, the creator of the preschool lift-the-flap classic Dear Zoo, has been a trusted name in early learning for over thirty years. The much-loved Buster from the bestselling Oh Dear! returns in Rod Campbell's Buster's Zoo. Toddlers will love exploring the zoo and discovering their favourite animals in this touch-and-feel board book. With bright, bold artwork, lots of touch-and-feel textures and a special lift-the-flap surprise, Buster's Zoo is sure to delight young children - and the thick board pages and chunky cased cover make it great for small hands.
He was brought up in Zimbabwe and returned to Britain where he completed a doctorate in organic chemistry. In 1980 he became involved in children's publishing where he began designing innovative books with interactive elements and repetitive phrases.
In 1987 he founded Campbell Blackie Books in partnership with his publisher Blackie. Campbell Books (as it became in 1989) was sold in 1995 to Macmillan Publishers.
I don't find Buster a particularly compelling character, and I have one or two issues with some of the scenes - for example, the snake doesn't seem to be in a secure enclosure and I think it could easily escape. Then the chimps; why are they sitting at a table and chairs? And how come the animals all look so happy? Last time I went to a zoo, it was a deeply depressing experience, but this book makes me think the animals enjoy the confinement.
Still, the small patches on each page that have some kind of texture are nice, and they seem fairly resistant to the clumsy, heavy handed touch of a baby. I don't know if it is close to being the first "touch and feel" type book, but that strikes me as a mine worth digging.
Does the little girl like it? Well, she's still only 8 months old and she doesn't know what a lion or a bear or an elephant is yet, but she does like to touch the fur of the various animals and she doesn't cry whenever I try to show it to her anymore. I think there's more legs in this one as she gets older, but there's not much in it for me.
