Determined to break some ancient curses by the Strangford family on the St. Germaine family, a brother and sister who are mer-people pretend to be land walkers and visit the Strangfords. When they all fall in love, recover the Sea Opal that started the feud and mingle their blood, the curse is lifted on both families. Interesting read - unusual premise. Two brief lovemaking scenes.

Destined to be enemies, she a sea person cursed to never live of land, he a descended of the gypsy who cursed her. Each in their own way, they search for a way to break the curses. His family is dying out so he seeks the Opal to break the family’s bad luck. He's reclusive only because he's so focused on his inventions. He isn't bitter or tortured and he knows he must marry to preserve his line. The heroine and her brother design a plan to seduce the hero and get her pregnant. A half bred will break the curse and her people can return to land. She has the ability to survive longer on land in short intervals so she volunteers for the mission. She poses as another gypsy and they begin their courtship. Along the way there are plenty of signs that something is wrong with the heroine and although the hero isn't stupid and suspects something is up, he's blinded by her beauty and how attached he finds himself. Indeed, he's more pissed and betrayed by the fact that she isn't the woman he originally signed up to marry than the fact that she's a mermaid. It really didn't seem to matter to him as, beginning the genius he is, he immediately sees the chance to use her to get the opal.

I liked this book but I didn't love it. There wasn't any romantic passion and the sex scenes seemed forced and overwhelming. I liked the hero as a character because he's noble, smart and honest about the fact his first love is science and he refuse to let a wife ruin his experiments. The heroine was a very adapt liar. Even though you knew she was lying, she had her story straight and had everything planned out to get her way. I did feel like she loved him and she risks her life to get him the Opal but honestly, I was more interested in her brother George's tale.
