Shortly before World War II, the Carnegie Corporation funded a study of African American life - the result was Gunnar Myrdal's An American Dilemma. Most of the research was carried out by sociologists working under Charles Spurgeon Johnson, and this is a summary of his team's survey.
Charles Spurgeon Johnson was a distinguished American sociologist, first black president of historically black Fisk University, and a lifelong advocate for racial equality and the advancement of civil rights for African Americans and all other ethnic minorities.
