Just finished zool and I was a bit nostalgic, that I won't be able to meet my favorite but true representation of myself and many other youths, in India who are struggling against all the odds to find their true identity in a mess of urban jungle which we call cities.
I think Nemade has overdone himself with this book, because he covers a broad range of topics in this book with degradation of our education system, to casteist college politics to existentialism. And he does this in a unique way by using all the flavors of marathi language, and with normal dialogues that people have with each other.
The best thing about this book is that the narrator of this book could be any one of us, Changdev Patil represent each and everyone of us, who trying to find something meaningful in life, but keep on drifting due to it.
He knows what's wrong with our system and our culture, but he is not able to change it. At the end he gives up and becomes a part of the system, and he loses not only his identity but himself doing it.
I think the last scene where in he kills the diseased dog is ultimate identity which each and everyone of us has, we keep running behind something which we want no matter what it costs us, and at the end of the day when we get it, we don't think it was worth it, and then fate finally strikes us.
This is the best book in 4 part series. Hat's off 5/5 stars.

नेमाडे फक्त माणसांची आणि ठिकाणांची गोष्ट सांगत नाहीत तर त्याचबरोबर महाराष्ट्राच्या आणि काही प्रमाणात भारताच्या ही सामाजिक, राजकीय, जातीय आणि धार्मिक गोष्टी सांगतात. आपला ढोंगीपणा आपल्याला दाखवून देतात. सिरीजच्या पहिल्या ३ पुस्तकांप्रमाणेच हे चौथं पुस्तक सुद्धा जबरदस्त!!👌🏽

चांगदेव परत दुसऱ्या गावी आलाय नोकरीं साठी. इथे परत तेच आहे. नवीन कॉलेज, नवीन लोक, नवीन खोली, संस्थेतलं राजकारण इत्यादि. फक्त चांगदेव आता बदललाय. त्याच्यामध्ये जे बदल झालेत ते झुल मध्ये येतात. चांगदेव या शिक्षण व्यवस्थेत चांगला मुरलाय. गंगातीरकर या नवख्या, तरुण प्राध्यापकाला तो कसं शिकवावं, विद्यार्थांना कसं हाताळावं याचा सल्ला देतो. त्याचबरोबर या नवीन कॉलेजात तो संघर्ष टाळून जुळवून घेण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो. हो म्हणत, कॉलेजची सर्व हमाली कामे करतो.
भोळेच्या माध्यमातून एका बहुजन (धनगर) समाजाच्या मुलाचा प्राध्यापक बनण्यापर्यंतचा प्रवास सांगतो. भोळेचा आदर्शवाद.
राजेश्वरी ही देखणी, आधुनिक विचारांची, स्वावलंबी बाई. तिच्याबरोबरची निर्मळ मैत्री.

चांगदेव चतुष्ट्यचा अंतिम भाग म्हणजे नेमाड्यांची 'झूल'. हा भाग म्हणजे काय तर, जर चार लोक पारावर बसून गप्पा मारत बसले तर कसे, काही बोलतात, काही करतात. या कादंबरीतील पात्रं पण तशीच काहीशी वागतात-बोलतात. या पात्रांची नावं बाकी झकास आहेत उदारणार्थ जातीने धनगर असलेले भोळे, छोटा मेंदू मोठा आणि मोठा मेंदू छोटा असलेलं देशपांडे, कुलकर्णी ला कुकर्णी, चांगला देशपांडे, संस्थाचलक माठुराम, ठोसर वगैरे.
राजकारणी लोक शैक्षणिक संस्था व विद्यापीठे केवळ आपल्या फायद्यासाठी वापरात असतात आणि यात साऱ्या तरुण वर्गाला हाताशी धरलेलं असतं आणि यात भरडलेही तेच जातात याची त्यांना जाणही नसते. हि शिक्षणालयें शिक्षण कमी आणि भानगडी जास्त अशी. अर्थात हे सारं वास्तविक आहे, केवळ कादंबरीतच नाही. दुसरं म्हणजे कादंबरीत जातीयतेचं गटार अगदी ओतप्रोत - काठोकाठ भरून वाहते, प्रत्येकजण जातीभिमानी आहे, जातीला जातीविषयी अविश्वासही असतो. एक पात्रं तर असं म्हणतं कि उद्या जर महारांचं राज्य आलं तर निम्मे ब्राम्हण स्वतःला महार म्हणून घेतील! यात वास्तव आहे. स्वतःला सत्तेजवळ जाता यावं म्हणून लालची लोक असं करतात. त्याला जातीचे संदर्भ कितपत असतात देवजाणे. यातूनच जातीयतेची विषवल्ली वाढली, टिकली आणि फोफावली. सत्ताधारी येनकेन प्रकारे स्वतःची सत्ता टिकवतो यात समाजाचं हित-अहित फारसं लक्षात घेतलं जात नाही. कालही तेच होतं, आजही तेच आहे आणि उद्याही तेच राहणार! काल जातीचे संदर्भ होते, आज लोकशाही/हुकुमशाही वगैरेंचे आहेत उद्या ज्ञानाचे असणार?
बाकी या भागात चांगदेवला हे समजतं कि कुठेही जा परिस्तिथी जवळपास सारखीच असते, इथंही त्याचा नेहमीप्रमाणे मोठा मित्र परिवार (भोळे, चिपळूणकर, चांगला देशपांडे, देसाई वगैरे) असतो. तरीही त्याचं एकटेपण काही त्याची पाठ सोडत नाही, आणि इथंही तो दिशाहीनच असतो, परंतु तटस्थ असतो, तो ना बामणांची कड घेतो ना ब्राम्हणेतरांची बाजू.

पुरोगामी महाराष्ट्रातील विषमता दाखवणारे लिखाण. बरेच वेळा टीकात्मक वाटते पण काही उल्लेख, उतारे मनमोकळे मनाला पटून जातात.
