Cari Z delivers yet another effortlessly breathtaking MM fantasy short, this time sharing an epic love story between a fallen angel and his archangel lover.

My heart was completely enraptured in this mere 32 page story about longing, redemption and true love.

Once again, I long for the years when the MM Romance Group ran their fantastic “Don’t Read in the Closet” events annually. It’s a damn shame it never resumed after all the fallout of the 2015 drama, because so many of the stories that were produced during that time were pure magic.

Although angels and demons do very little for me, I was intrigued to see Ms. Z’s interpretation.

I shouldn’t have worried. This brings a bit of horror, gore, theology, and epic love.

A moving, beautifully redemptive story!

3 Stars - A fallen angel, a life in Hell and to ultimately be saved by the one you love.

I usually like weird tales, exciting new worlds, new types of characters and inventive writer. And how weird this is, because it is - I actually liked the story overall. It's not a great novella, but it was an interesting story to read.
‘With Emiel, Renat longed for more than the simple and distant pleasure that came with the duty of love. Emiel had skin that Renat dreamed of touching, a mouth he burned to taste, and wings he would give anything to feel wrap around him.’

Renat is one of the fallen angels who followed Lucifer into Hell. Remaining in God's Heaven is Renate's beloved friend, the angel Emiel. Thousands of years later, we meet again the now powerful, but so bitter, Prince of Hell - the demon Renat. Hell is hot, dark and full of dark demons. One day there is a foreign visitor at the Western Gate...

I haven't any religious views or thoughts about this topic. Growing up in an almost secular tradition with a protestant twist, is my knowledge about God's angels and the Hell really quite small. Of course, I have heard about the fallen angels before, but I didn't know that they also created Hell - so something new I've learned.

”I dreamed of this moment for so long. I prayed to our Father and, at last, He answered me. God rewards the faithful, my love.”

With only 39 pages you haven't time to get as much progress of a story. I really lacked a bit more growth romance. As the romantic I am I always thirsty for some sweet cuteness, a little heat and some beautiful declarations of love. Part of this, I get - but I want some more. I'm still thirsty! I really would need to read a sweet and steamy epilogue to feel for this angels and their love. When is it out?

Maybe well strange and odd - but quickly read and kind of exciting. Overall, however, I'm pretty "untouched" by it. I want and need to be more "touched" by what I read. That being said, it only gets three stars from me. The potential is there but the short form was not enough for me.

I Like - craziest shortie so far?

Loved this freebie which was from last year's Love is Always Write event, another 4.5 stars.

A shortie review. I absolutely loved Cari's story from this year's LHNB event, and decided to do some tracking down of other stories. This is a story of angels and devils, and in particular two angels Renat and Emiel. Renat is in love with Emiel, but when Heaven is rocked and torn apart by war, Renat and Emiel find themselves on opposite sides of the divide.

How this is resolved, and what happens to the two angels in question is for you to discover.

I’m a fan of Cari Z and loved these two characters during their cameo in the Cambion series (which I highly recommend). The author pointed out to me that Emiel and Renat had their own story and I beat feet to get a hold of it. It was available as a free download on Storm Moon Press’ website and I’ve read it twice so far. It has all the hallmarks of an epic romance but surprisingly compact within a short story. It could easily have been expanded to a full novel but perhaps that would have been too much drama and angst. Instead it fits wonderfully as a shorter length and is a great tale, both on its own and as a companion to the Cambion stories.

Renat and Emiel are both archangels of Heaven during the time of the great war. Lucifer is cast out of Heaven and Renat seizes that chance to declare his love for Emiel. Since angels aren’t supposed to love, doing so casts Renat out of Heaven. Since Emiel rebuffed Renat’s advances, Emiel gets to stay in God’s good graces. However, as the years, millennia, eons (?) have past, the two have never forgotten each other. Yet it’s still a shock when Renat finds Emiel at the gates of Hell being tortured by another fallen angel turned demon.

To start with I loved the drama infused within the story. The tension was present from the beginning and never let go. With the shorter length, that kind of prolonged tension never felt draining or overwhelming but instead exciting and riveting. The world building has to be sacrificed for length and relationship building but the familiar trope helps here. The author also has a knack for conveying detail without seeming to. I was engaged in the action and drama from the beginning and never felt left out or wanting.

The angel/demon doomed love story is a fun one and used here to great effect. Renat is the narrator so he is the one we get to know while Emiel is much more mysterious, although that seems intentional. The characters are not fully explored as such is extremely hard to do within just a few pages, but there is enough that the men feel real and not caricatures. Similarly, the religious themes are certainly there but not overwhelming. They’re an inherent part of the story but not used to push any agenda.

Once again it’s the writing and sense of emotion that draws me to this author. The language and prose is excellent, with a clarity that really speaks to me. It’s sparse without unneeded embellishment, yet conveys a range of emotion. There’s drama, need, love, despair, hope, and redemption. I especially liked the touch at the end with Lucifer and Michael. Emiel and Renat are easily two of my favorite characters from this author and I hope she writes more about them.

A beautiful story about love, grace, and trust, this takes the idea of the falling of angels one step further and examines what would happen if one of them fell because of love. The kind of love that is "too personal", and doesn’t put God first. Kind of a difficult situation to imagine happening to an angel, but it is an interesting assumption. I have to admit that the writing pulled me in, the characters had me fascinated, and the idea of "what if" the way Cari interpreted it had me turning the pages eagerly, wanting to find out what happens.

Renat is the angel with a problem. He loves Emiel, but not with the kind of heavenly love angels are supposed to feel, he wants more. His love is more like the human kind, but the real problem is that he loves Emiel more than God. He has made the decision to leave heaven, and tries to take Emiel with him, but Emiel isn’t ready. He cannot disobey God, and so Renat falls alone and becomes one of hell's princes.

Thousands of years later, Renat has suffered tremendously, but has kept a remnant of his grace. Emiel comes to get him back, and the solution is beautiful in its simplicity, as is his plan of getting them away from Satan.

The power of love is what makes this story special. Beautifully done! If you like angel/demon stories, if you enjoy thought experiments about good and evil and how they interrelate, and if you like reading about characters who will most likely make you ache with understanding and hope that all will end well, you will probably like this short story as much as I did.

Really REALLY good story about a fallen angel and his long lost love. Cari perfectly wove the picture into the story which is always nice, since that's kind of the point. This was a beautiful story that had me tearing up at times. Yes it's about angels so there is a certain amount of "our Father's will" and what-not, but given the characters it is completely appropriate and wonderfully done, not at all preachy, it just is what it is. And although this is short, it tells a complete story from beginning to end, and the reader isn't left wanting just that little bit "more" like we often are with short-stories. Well done!

I suppose liberal and/or gay Christians/Jews could appreciate this short story to its full extent and feel the romanticism that was surely intended to be felt.
As for me I tried to read it like a romantic fantasy or something based on myth as I would read a tale based on Greek mythology but I doubly failed.

First, the religious mysticism on which this M/M tale is based is irrepressible and cannot be neutralised.
Second, even if I managed to do that, I never could stand god-like characters in fantasies as I think they are simply cheating the reader out of a sensible story.

The only thing that could have redeemed (pun intended) this story for me would have been a sublime writing. It is professional but nothing more than that.

A beautiful story. Absolutely beautiful. While short, it managed to tell a complete story with perfectly chosen language. I felt for Renat, and I loved Emiel's quiet faith in his love for Renat and for God. It's not overly religious, though religion is the backdrop for stories such as this one, and I love how well the worldbuilding was done. All in all, wonderful from start to finish. I definitely want to see the story hinted at between Satan and Michael, though!

I absolutely loved this (and discovered that I have a soft spot for fallen angel stories lol)! Renat has loved Emiel for as long as he can remember. When Lucifer was cast out of Heaven, Renat tried to convince Emiel to leave Heaven with him. Emiel could not go against the will of God and the two angels were seperated for millenia, Renat becoming a powerful demon in Hell and Emiel continuing his angel duties in Heaven.

When Emiel is captured just inside the gates of Hell, Renat must fight to protect the pure and beautiful angel from the filth and horrors of his home.

It's rare that I give a book five stars, but this one definitely deserves it. The author told an engrossing tale about love, redemption and trust that all of us can learn from. Christianity was a major part of the story, but it wasn't preachy or pushy. It was foundational and provided the necessary backstory needed to fully understand all of the characters and their actions.

I really enjoyed this story and its characters and am very happy I gave this story a chance. :)

In All Your Ways is a short story about Renat, a fallen Angel forced to follow Lucifer in the Kingdom of Hell after betraying God's believes by trying to make the man he loves leave Heaven with him.

Renat makes himself a name in Hell and becomes a very powerful demon - the Prince of Hell. Remembering his beloved angel Emiel by the means of a beautiful statue, Renat struggels trough many years of darkness and tries to keep his physical beauty intact.

One day, the paths of Renat and Emiel cross again.

I'm not a big fan of Angel/Demon stories and I had the feeling that the world building in this one fell rather short. I wasn't able to get the whole concept in so few pages. 2 stars!

For those who are concerned about religious overtones in angel/demon stories, yes, this one does have some. I personally do not find this story to be overly preachy, but the fall of the angels from Heaven plays a part in this story, as does God's Grace and His Will, so if you think that may bother you, you may be right. They exist enough to make you think about their importance in relation to the story and what truth they may hold, but I do not feel like I was hit over the head with it. (Others might.)

I thought this was an enjoyable angel/demon love story. (Really more angel/angel love story. You'll see what I mean.) 3.5 stars.

A fine addition to the LiAW series, about an Angel and a Demon, and their journey to find again the love that they once shared. It is about hope, and a love that survives despite unbearable suffering, and that such love can be its own reward.

This review can be found at Brief Encounters Reviews.

This short starts when all hell broke loose in heaven (ah, religious humour ), when Renat knew that he would be going to the newly formed hell with Lucifer because in his heart he had put his constant companion Emiel first over God. He confesses his love to Emiel and asks him to join him, however Emiel refuses to go against God and Renat spends the next millennia mooning about it essentially. When he hears of an angel arriving in hell, he quickly realizes it’s Emiel and he fights another demon for possession, thus alerting Lucifer to Emiel’s presence and possible death/torture for Emiel or both of them.

I enjoyed the descriptions of Hell, if you can enjoy such things, it was a bit different from what I’ve read in the past. Also, for a demon who enjoyed torturing human souls by making them focus on their own misdeeds, I liked Renat and his continued love for Emiel. Despite “doing his job” he never really adapted to hell, and still mourned Emiel. You don’t get much about Emiel or what he’s been doing the last centuries, just that he shows up and claims everything will be fine.

It was interesting to see a big bad demon thrown off by what would be considered a more innocent angel, in part by his efforts to protect the man he sees as more vulnerable, which is not necessarily the case. Emiel takes the lead in their new relationship, assuring Renat that it will be fine, confident when confronting Lucifer, and seeming having planned everything in advance of his arrival. Of course there is a way after all this time for them to be together (it is romance), and I think it would be an interesting story to see Renat coping with life out of hell as he always refused to spend time on earth.

The author has a knack for revealing a lot of information without overwhelming you. The short format doesn’t allow for a lot of world building, but the fallen angel trope allows most readers to fill in the gaps. Definitely worth a read, and it’s a good chance to try the author’s style if you’ve not read her other stories.

A story about angels--especially fallen--are right up my alley, so within the first few lines, I felt pretty secure that this story was going to get a good rating from me. That being said, a poorly written or formulated story with fallen angels that screws up still won't satisfy! However, this story is equal parts heartbreaking and sweet, with Renat's struggle as he loves Emiel and is rejected--by him and by God--and is cast down into Hell.

While the idea of some of the fallen angels being cast out because of loving another more than God is not new, it also fits within the 'doctrine' that has become popular regarding the angels and the fall. There are a lot of religious implications in this story that fit with Christian themes (while others are arguably outside that realm), with the more modern forgiving God and the angrier cast-out-the-angels God. There is also a wonderful theme of "fulfilling God's role," which is somewhat horrifying, but also kind of nice. The way all these different threads come together make a wonderful tapestry, creating a short, poignant story within a colorful world that leaves room for further exploration while also satisfying the reader's wants.

All the characterizations were well done, from angry Lucifer to the forgiving glimpse of Morning Star that we see; the sex was erotic but not too sexualized (hey, these are angels we're talking about!); and the story has a satisfying closing. An all around well-done piece.

Can I give some advice while reading this story? Do not click underneath the "want to read" link that says read the story. You will only get a preview and then be hugely disappointed because you can't see anymore. What I did was read it via the url link and what I got from that was amazing. This story could very well be the best Angel and Demon story I have read in a looooong time. Yep, that good. You have battles, love, betrayal, jealousy, redemption, and yes you do have sex; it is what I would consider "softcore" It's not graphic, but it says so much about the couple involved. The story revolves around "Renat" and "Emiel" who are in love, but will, with the battle between Lucifer and God (or Michael rather as he's the fighter here), sit on opposite sides of the war. Renat feels that because he loves Emiel, he is unable to have God first in his heart, so he has decided to go with Lucifer. Emiel, when asked to follow, chooses to trust in "his Father's" wisdom and therefore remains in heaven. Well, once Renat has made his decision, he is considered a traitor and when Lucifer is cast out, Renat has to go as well. The emotion shown with that one act right there, makes this story an enjoyable read. The description of what happens to Renat in Hell, makes it unforgettable. But, the ending, with the confrontation with Lucifer, that's what makes it amazing. At least to me... an excellent read! I loved it!

Sweet story of two angels, one fallen and another still shiny and pure finding a way to be together. Renat and Emiel loves each other yet as Angels it's somehow problematic so when the opportunity comes, Renat decides to Fall and asks Emiel to join him so they could love each other freely. Emiel refuses. He loves Renat but is unable to deny God's will. For Renat God comes second to Emiel, yet leaving him behind is not what he thought will happen with his proposal. Thousand of years later Emiel appears on the Gates of Hell looking for the Fallen Angel he still loves. Renat battles his way to get to him but even if he is on his side, they still have to manage the Devil himself not to mention Renat won't be welcome to the Gates of Heaven considering he is a Fallen..

Yet the one who had faith is Emiel, and when there's a will, there's a way.

Another sweet read by Cari. This month I have 4 novellas by her (this being the second) all free reads from the M/M Romance Group in GoodReads. It's so AWESOME reading those short free novellas I love this initiative and the fact authors are eagerly participating. It's also a great way to check out an author's work! I already added more books by her for a few months from now.

In All Your Ways is an amazing story and a must read for everyone who doesn't mind the idea of two males being together. Set in the domain of Hell we see our protagonist, Renat, years after he has fallen. He has lost his Grace and partakes in the torture of souls but has retained his love for the angel he fell for, Emiel.

This story is well written and satisfying for the reader. I myself found that this story is complete as it is. Yes Cariz Z. could continue this story but I believe that the story has come full circle and has therefore been made whole.

Set against the harsh environment of Hell every gentle touch and act of kindness is made all the more . . . precious and heart-wrenching.

I can only say that I am holding out hope that Lucifer and Michael get their own story regardless of a happy ending. I for one would love to know their history. :) It is their moment that I especially love in this story. That moment when Emiel gives Lucifer a kiss from Gabriel reassuring him that he (Gabriel) has not forgotten.

Thank you Cariz Z. for this wonderful story. I will always be one of my favourite.

I was surprised by how much I liked this one. It may have had a lot to do with the fact that the mythology in it reminded me much more of the TV show Supernatural than of the Christianity I grew up with. So right from the start, my mind was filled with all of these delightfully lovely images. ;)

I also love that this is the most amazing example of love triumphing over everything, and the power of love to redeem and make us better.

While I admired both of the characters, I didn't really feel like I could connect with either of them. But I think i decided that that wasn't really the point of this one. This one seemed like it was about the bigger stuff, and I was entranced by the settings and the events and things so much that not knowing as well didn't really bother me.

Beautiful story, remarkably fantastically vivid.

SPOILERS

=============================

I do realize that

- Yep, it was God's punishment for Renat to make him suffer for a thousand years for choosing to leave his parent's house fall.
- Yep, it was probably God's intention to cure Renat of his resentment towards humans by making him one.

3 Stars off

- for presenting that totalitarian regime as a generous and forgiving "love" bestowed upon God's children. That's religion for you.
- for Emiel and God through him forcing human form on Renat, offering no warning and no choice (God forbid, Renat has freedom of choice again!). Vengeful creature, that Father of theirs, isn't he?

=============================

Other than that - nicely written, I really enjoyed all the bits and pieces that did not involve The Almighty. 4 stars.

Rounding up to 3.

As I was reading it, I kind of felt like I'd read it before/started it. Maybe it's just the subject matter; I have read quite a few angel/demon stories and when they begin, they all kind of seem the same.
I mean when it began after the little mini prologue-y thing.

Marvelously handled, I'd say. I think the author actually found the balance between demon, angel, human that actually - at least for me - works, and works extremely well. Each is nuanced in its own way and though the ending seems more of a HFN thing, it's incredibly beautiful in a tragic sort of way.

I really liked this one; I've always enjoyed stories of redemption and I don't think you can do much better than the tale of a fallen angel. Unlike some other novellas, I found myself completely satisfied with this and I felt it ended in a good place; I don't find myself sitting here wishing for at least an epilogue. I'd love to see more along these lines in the future...perhaps with Michael and Lucifer? Either way, this was a really enjoyable read and I know I'll read it again in the future.

Hmmm, dark and light come together and love can conquer all! I love angel stories and this one was unique. The detail in the world building was wonderful. Despite the violence and dark overtone to the story, there was something just touching and beautiful to be found as well. I really enjoyed it and hope to see more!!!
