A young man takes a journey on a cart through jungles to reach the small hamlet of Bangarwadi, inhabited by a few shepherds, peasants and some members of a criminal tribe known as the Ramoshis. The young man goes there as a teacher. After the initial trauma, he finds the milieu and the environment very inspiring and educative. But then he is transferred to some other school. What remains with him is the memory of the simple folk and their pure nature.

About the author

Vyankatesh Digambar Madgulkar (Marathi: व्यंकटेश दिगंबर माडगूळकर) (1927–2001) was one of the most popular Marathi writers of his time. He became well-known mainly for his realistic writings about village life in a part of southern Maharashtra called Maandesh, set in a period of 15 to 20 years before and after India's Independence.

Madgulkar wrote 8 novellas, over 200 short stories, about 40 screenplays, and some folk plays (लोकनाट्य), travelogues, and essays on nature. He translated some English books into Marathi, especially books on wild life, as he was an avid hunter.

why do all stories have unhappy endings? this book is just awesome, but due to its distressed closure, rating it at 4...feel it should have been ended with a positive note...nyways, the story is very interesting & exciting till climax, a newly trained teacher got a job in a remote village of maharashtra where there was a school just for the sake of it, the school & studies for vilagers children was a matter of joke. Education was not a serious job & was considered as an optional/part time work for all of them. This newly appointed guy tries to build a good image in front of people about school & succeeds to help them in understanding the importance of education...the story goes on well & we feel that everything is gonna alright now & thats the time when a dreadful draught occurs which makes people leave their loved adobes & village for ever in search of water & other needs of life. there is a similar named movie based on this book, Book has been translated in English too as "The village has no walls".

பன்கர்வாடி, நான் அண்மையில் படித்த மிகச் சிறந்த நாவல்களில் ஒன்று. இந்நாவலின் எளிமையே அதன் மிகச்சிறந்த வலிமை. பன்கர்வாடி என்ற சிற்றூரை அச்சுஅசலாக நம் கண்முன் நிறுத்தியதில் ஆசிரியர் பெரும் வெற்றிபெற்றுள்ளார்.

ஆட்டு மந்தைகள், மேய்ப்பர்கள், வெள்ளந்தி மனிதர்கள், நேர்மையான திருடன், வெளிநாட்டுப் பறவைகள், நாட்டாமை, குழந்தைகள், பள்ளிக்கூடம், இருபது அகவை ஆசிரியன் என அனைவரும் நம் மனதில் பதிந்துவிடுகிறார்கள்.

மழை பொய்க்கையில், பஞ்ச காலத்தின் கொடுமைகள் பற்றி சித்தரிப்புகள் கண்கலங்க வைத்தன. ஒரு ஊரே உண்ண உணவின்றி, வாழ்ந்த இடத்தை விட்டு இடம்பெயர்வது பற்றிய பதிவுகள் மனதில் ஆறாத காயத்தை ஏற்படுத்தின.

மொழியாக்கம் மிகவும் அருமையாக அமைந்துள்ளது. நேசனல் புக் டிரஸ்ட் பதிப்பகம் இந்த சிறிய நாவலையாவது மறுபதிப்பு செய்தால் நன்றாக இருக்கும். ஆனால் அவர்கள் செய்ய மாட்டார்கள். PDF-வில் தான் படித்தாக வேண்டும்.

अप्रतिम! जुन्या काळातील गावरान माणसांचे दैनंदिन जीवन कसे असायचे याचे वर्णन या पुस्तकात केले आहे. सर्व कथा मास्तारांभोवती फिरते. बाकी सर्व पात्रे येतात आणि जातात. पण प्रत्येक पात्र आपल्यावर त्याची छाप पाडते. पुस्तक जरी सत्तर वर्षांपूर्वी लिहिले असले तरी कालबाह्य वाटत नाही. न चुकवावे असे हे पुस्तक.

Story of an earlier villages in India where a young school teacher who joins newly.... in a village of shepherds in Maandesh, how he tries to change their views about the importance of education,the effort that he takes to bring about this transformation,can hardly be seen today.
But this village has not been blessed with plenty of rains since many years,so people don't have any source to live,hence the whole village migrates to another place...
You really don't wish to leave this book in between,the whole scene is so excellently created by the writer that you start imagining it in front of your eyes,as you go on reading.

Also a film was directed by Amol Palekar,based on the book,he has done excellent work,with this piece of literature that you must watch this movie too,

This book has been translated to English with the name “The village had no walls".

The plot of this book is rather straightforward. A young government teacher gets appointed to a remote village, sparsely populated by sheep herding community. His interactions with the locals, trivial village matters and the surrounding nature form the core of the book. Comic as well as heartbreaking situations arise due to the innocent ignorance of villagers.

The beauty of Vyankatesh Madgulkar's writings are his hyper realistic characters which make you wonder did he tag people their entire life to get such uncanny resemblance? His minute observations of spoken language and relatable scenarios make the characters come alive and you can easily spot them among the people around you.

It is quite a small book. The story is quite simple. It shows life of people from a sheep/goat herding village. The village is very remote and thus lacks basic facilities.
The book is able to document the thinking of these people, their struggles and how dependent they are on nature for their survival. Really a good intro to life of these people. The language is a bit tough as it sometimes uses dialect of Marathi used by these people.

हे पुस्तक छोटसं आहे, पण खुप छान पुस्तक आहे. ह्या पुस्तकाद्वारे आपण धनगरांचे आयुष्य आणी राहणी बद्दल बरेच शिकू शकतो. ह्या पुस्तकात धनगरांच्या गावाची गोष्ट सांगितलेली आहे. बंगरवाडी हे ते गाव. ह्या गावात एक खुप छोट्या सरकारी शाळा चालवण्यासाठी एक मास्टर येतो. हा मास्टर ह्या गावातील लोकांचे जीवनातील संघर्ष, हे लोका कसं विचार करतात आणी ह्या लोकांचं जीवन निसर्गावर किती अवलंबून आहे त्याचं वर्णन करतो. हे पुस्तक वाचून आपण ह्या लोकांचे आयुष्य समझून त्याचे कौतुक करायला लागतो. पुस्तकातील मराठी थोडी अवघड आहे, कारण बरीच मराठी धनगरांची मराठी आहे असं म्हणता येईल. खुप साधी पण छान गोष्ट आहे जी आपल्याला दुसऱ्यांच्या आयुष्य दाखवते.

सरकारी शिक्षकाची ग्रामीण गावातील ( बनगरवाडी ) शाळेत बदली झाली. त्याने गावासाठी आणि गावातील लोकांना मदत करून चांगले नाव कमावले. शेवटी या गावा सोबत जोडलेले नात त्याला आणि गावाकरयाना मागे सोडून जावे लागलं.
गोष्टीतले गाव आणि माणसं मला आपलीशी वाटू लागली. या गोष्टीचा शेवट मला दु:खी करून गेला.

It's a book about the time that this teacher spends in this village trying to first gather the students and teach them while also trying to make a place for himself in the hearts of the people of the village.

The story is narrated by the teacher as he tells us the good and bad incidents that happen in Bangarwadi.

Written in simple prose with a simple story, I felt the story had too much description. And though I kind of liked the book, it didn't make me go Wow.

व्यंकटेश माडगूळकर यांचे लिखाण म्हणजे डोंगर-दर्‍या, रान वाटा, गावाकडच्या वस्त्या आणि वाटा तिथली ओबडधोबड भोळीभाबडी साधी बेरकी माणसं आणि त्यांचे आयुष्य यांच्याभोवतीचं. स्वतः माडगूळकर सुद्धा अशाच एका गावी राहायचे. त्याच गावाशी मिळत्या जुळत्या एका गावाची आणि तेथील लोकांची गोष्ट, माडगूळकरांनी प्रस्तुत पुस्तकामध्ये मांडली आहे.

पुस्तकाची पहिली आवृत्ती १९५५ साली प्रकाशित झाली होती.
जवळजवळ ६० ते ७० वर्षां अगोदरचं ह्या पुस्तकाचं लिखाण.
ज्या काळी, शालेय शिक्षण घेण्याबाबत लोकांमध्ये मुळीच जागरुकता नव्हती. शाळा सुरु तर केल्या गेलेल्या पण त्यात विद्यार्थीच नाही, अशी परिस्थिती. पोटासाठी दोन वेळची भाकर मिळवणं आणि त्यासाठी मेहनत करणं एवढंच लोकांना माहिती. शालेय शिक्षण आणि लोकांचा काहीएक संबंध नव्हता.

अशीच समजूत असणारे "बनगरवाडी" हे गाव. गावचा मुख्य व्यवसाय म्हणजे मेंढ्या पाळणे. अशा गावात एका दिवशी एक तरुण मास्तर येतो. त्याची हि गोष्ट. तो गावात आणि गावातल्या लोकांशी कसा मिळवुन घेतो? ज्या शाळेत कुणीही शिकत नाही अशी शाळा चालवायचं, मुलांना शिकवण्याचे प्रयत्न, मास्तर कसे करतो? ह्याचे वर्णन या पुस्तकात केले गेले आहे.
साधी सरळ माणसे, त्यांचे दैनंदिन जीवन, शेतीचे कष्ट, लोक श्रद्धा, जत्रा हे सर्व विषय अत्यंत बारकाईने व अचूक निरीक्षण शक्तीने माडगूळकरांनी या पुस्तकात वर्णन केले आहे. आनंदा रामोशी, रामा बनगर, आयबु, म्हातारा कारभारी आणि त्याची मुलगी अंजी अशा आणखी काही पात्रांचे सुंदर वर्णन, लेखकाने केले आहे.
ही एक लघु कादंबरी असली तरी तिचा आवाका, महत्त्व फार मोठे आहे. ह्या पुस्तकावर, अमोल पालेकर ह्यांनी १९९५ साली चित्रपट देखील बनवला.
त्यावेळची गावातील परिस्थिती अनुभवण्यासाठी, एकदा नक्की वाचा.

३-४ वर्षांपूर्वी मी बनगरवाडीमधली एक कथा English मध्ये वाचली होती. तेंव्हा मला हे पुस्तक आपण न वाचल्याबद्दल पहिल्यांदाच वाईट वाटलं होतं. आपल्या मातृभाषेतली कोणतीही गोष्ट दुसऱ्या भाषेतून अनुवादित स्वरूपात आपल्या समोर येणे आणि ती आपल्याला आवडणे एका अर्थाने धक्कादायक आणि एका अर्थाने त्रासदायकही असतं हे मला तेंव्हा जाणवलं. त्या धक्क्यानंतरही मूळ पुस्तक हातात घ्यायला ३-४ वर्षं गेली हे अजून त्रासदायक.

बनगरवाडीची कथा साधी, सोपी, सरळ, वाहती अशी आहे. किंबहुना ती कथा नसून ते अनुभवकथन आहे, आणि म्हणूनच त्याला कसली मर्यादा किंवा कसलाही बांध नाही. ती वाहती आहे आणि वाहवून नेणारीही.

पुस्तकाचा कर्ता हा मास्तर म्हणून बनगरवाडी नावाच्या प्रामुख्याने धनगरवस्ती असलेल्या गावात रुजू होतो. सुरुवातीला शाळा चालवताना येणाऱ्या अडचणींवर मात करत तो शाळेला गावाचा एक अविभाज्य घटक बनवतो, गावातल्या लोकांशी मैत्रीपूर्ण संबंध प्रस्थापित करतो, जुन्या-जाणत्या धनगरांकडून बऱ्याच काही गोष्टी शिकतो, वेळोवेळी गावाच्या मदतीस धावून जातो. अशा ह्या मास्तरांची आणि त्याला सामावून घेणाऱ्या गावाची ही गोष्ट आहे. त्यात फारसे turns and twists नाहीत, किंवा उत्सुकता ताणून धरणाऱ्या घटना वगैरेही नाहीत, पण तरीही माणसाच्या स्वभावाचे कंगोरे आहेत. माणसं कशी असतात, कशी वागतात, एखाद्याच्या वागण्याचा समाजावर किंवा समाजाचा एखाद्यावर कसा परिणाम होतो ह्या गोष्टी मुळातूनच वाचण्यासारख्या आहेत. मास्तरासारख्या बुद्धिवादी, म्हणलं तर बाहेरच्या म्हणलं तर गावातल्या माणसाने केलेलं भाष्य अनेक ठिकाणी विचार करायला लावतं, आणि हीच ह्या पुस्तकाची strength आहे असं मला वाटतं.

खूप छान आणि आकर्षक पुस्तक आहे. हातामध्ये घेतल्यानंतर सोडण्याची ईच्छा झालीच नाही. पुस्तकातील पात्रे एकदम खरी खुरी वाटतात. आणि ज्या बारकाईने त्यांचे वर्णन केले आहे ते वाचून मन तृप्त होते आणि त्या काळाचा अंदाज येतो. धनगरी आयुष्य, त्यामधील खाचा खोचा, ताण तणाव, व्यक्ती विशेष आणि आयुष्याविषयी त्यांचे विचार मनाला हेलावून टाकणारे आहे. एक शिक्षक वाडीवर येऊन काही बदविण्याकरीता प्रयत्न करतो, लोक त्याला कसा प्रतिसाद देतात, त्यावेळची आर्थिक आणि सामाजिक परिस्थितीच्या जाणीव समोर ठेवून ही कथा पुढे जात राहते आणि शेवटी वाडी दुष्काळाच्या तावडीत सापडते. आणि राजारामच्या नजरेसमोर ती वाडी आणि वाडीतील लोक नाहीसे होतात. जीवन संघर्ष करण्यासाठी. आनंदा रामोशी, आईबु, रामा बनगर, कारभारी आणि त्याची मुलगी अंजु, जुग्ण्या रामोशी ही पात्रे विशेष आठवणीत राहतात.

१९५४ साली व्यंकटेश माडगूळकरांनी लिहिलेली हि कादंबरी भारतातील पूर्वीच्या खेड्याची पुन्हा एकदा भेट घालून देते, खेड्यातील प्रत्येक घर, शाळा, तालीम आणि माणसं डोळ्यांसमोर दिसू लागतात; एवढं सुंदर वर्णन या कादंबरीत आहे.
सरकारी शाळेचा एक तरुण शिक्षक बनगरवाडी मध्ये येतो काय आणि बघता बघता मेंढपाळांच्या गावात मिसळूनही जातो, या छोट्याश्या गावात त्याला भेटणारी माणसं आणि त्या प्रत्येक माणसाचा त्याच्या जीवनावर पडत गेलेला प्रभाव प्रत्येक पानामध्ये जाणवतो. शिक्षणाचं महत्व समजावता - समजावता वाडीतल्या प्रत्येक घरातील तिथल्या मुलांची जगण्याची धडपड तो समजू लागतो.
गावात तालीम बांधून घेतो शिक्षणासोबत बळकट दंड हि हवेत हा राजांचा संदेश गावात रुजवतो, प्रत्येक प्रसंग डोळ्यांसमोर जश्याच्या तसा जिवंत उभा राहतो.
अतिशय सुंदर असा प्रवास हि कादंबरी घडवते

A few months back, I found myself with some free time after my exams. I was unsure of what to do until a friend recommended a book to me. The book was 'Bangarwadi' by Vyankatesh Madgulkar, and it turned out to be an excellent read.

The book is one of the celebrated works of Marathi literature, It depicts the life of villagers involving shepherds, peasants, and members of a tribe known as 'Ramoshis' and explores the various situations and Insights of the bangarwadi, the traditional village life of people, and how they are satisfied and joyful with their lives.

The style of the book is simplistic, authentic, and relatable

It contains characters like a master, Karbhari, sheku and his wife, ayuba, Anji, and others

Each and every character, with their unique personality traits, sets the mood for an all out rustic feel of a Maharashtrian village. The shepherds, their lifestyles, festivals, and problems paint a vivid picture for the reader. Enjoyable for a teenager.

It's a story told by a school teacher. he was posted to bangarwadi as a teacher. The story tells his journey there and the people he met, and their lifestyle. (Nothing too special about them)
