Lia couldn't be happier when actor and classmate Kosuke asks her out on a date. But summer rains keep getting in the way of their dates and instead, Lia winds up spending time with their unapproachable and strict class rep Richter.

Summer Rain is Natalie Wormsbecher's first single release (I believe she has had shorter stories published in short story collections before). Wormsbecher is by far one of the better German manga artists out there and while Summer Rain isn't a groundbreaking book, it's got a lot of good things going for it.

The story is pretty simple, straight forward and something we've all seen before. This is also not Wormsbecher's art at its best yet but let's not forget that this is an early work. In any case, I find her style very unique - it clearly fits into the manga niche yet there's definitely something more Western about it which could allow for non-manga readers to approach it more easily as well. What I've always appreciated about her art is that she largely uses pencil colours - it gives her work a unique colourisation and shows that pencil colours are not to be underestimated.

One thing that I find both rare and refreshing is the fact that this story is set in a German setting. While no particular place is mentioned, it's clear that this takes place in a German-speaking area and it is just so nice to see a non-Japanese manga take place in its country of origin rather than forcefully getting 'Japanified'. And for those who just have to have Japanese elements in their manga; Kosuke is half-Japanese, hence his name.

Lia is likeable and it's a typical opposites-attract scenario. It's cute with clear-to-follow panels and nice layouts. Always bearing in mind that this is a oneshot and therefore doesn't have the capacity to create a deep story: it has good pacing and events develop naturally. If you ever want a German manga with a unique style, you can't go wrong with Wormsbecher and Summer Rain is a good starting point.

Annyira örülök, hogy végre van saját példányom ebből a kis szösszenetből! A Dramacon mellett ez volt a másik kedvenc mangám 7-8. osztályos koromban. Annyira, hogy csináltam belőle egy szövegkönyvi átiratot, hogy megmaradjon nekem is (esélytelen volt saját példányért kuncsorogni, édesanyám a mai napig nem túl nagy rajongója a mangáknak és animéknek.)

Maga a történet egy nagy kliséhalmaz – de abból a típusból, amit szeretek. Aranyos romantikus jelenetek, nem sok személyiséggel rendelkező karakterekkel, triviális tanulságokkal – szóval semmi extra, csak egy adag cukiság, ami fél órát pont kitölt. Furcsán keveredik egymással a nyugat (értsd: német) és a japán, és inkább a japánra hajaz. Igazából ha nem lennének a nevek németek, akkor képes lennék teljesen figyelmen kívül hagyni az európaiságot. Lia összességében egy kicsit idegesítő amúgy, de ez valószínűleg ebből a német-japán mixből fakad.

A rajzoláshoz nem értek, és bármilyen kínos is, a látott és/vagy szeretett animék rajzolóinak nevét sem tudom. Az értékelésem kimerül nagyjából annyiban, hogy tetszik/nem tetszik. Natalie Wormsbecher rajzolása tetszik – viszont az elég egyértelmű, hogy minden karaktere ugyanúgy néz ki, és néha a fekete-fehér kontrasztokat sem tartja meg konzisztensen, úgyhogy el kellett gondolkodnom, most éppen kit látok. És amennyire a többi borítót láttam, a későbbi munkái (ez az első mangája) is nagyon hasonlóak megjelenésre. De ez tényleg csak benyomás, élmény – nem szakvélemény.

Összességében nagyon élveztem az olvasást, és a rajz-formátum miatt mindig azt érzem, hogy ha legközelebb kézbe veszem, majd felfedezek még további apróságokat. És ez általában így is szokott lenni. Azt hiszem, gyakrabban kellene mangákat olvasnom. Megvenni ritkán van indíttatásom, főleg, hogy mindent egybevetve újonnan rémesen drága mulatság. De van könyvtár a világon mármint majd egyszer megint lesz talán, rendesen…

Ich bin großer Fan von Natalie Wormsbechers Mangas. Summer Rain ist ihr Erstlingswerk und ich habe hier die Neuauflage mit wunderschönem neuen Cover. Die Geschichte um Lia, Anders und Kosuke ist wirklich süß, ruhig erzählt und wohltuend für die Seele. <3

Vor zwei Tagen habe ich Feed me poison, den ich für den beste deutsche Manga halte. Jetzt habe ich "Summer rain" gelesen und man kann die Unterschieden merken. Die Geschichte ist ein bisschen schwächer und auch Wormsbechers Zeichnungen sind nicht so gut wie die von Bösch.

Aber ich habe mich amüsiert beim Lesen und das war das wichtigste. ^__^
