40 Days of Community Devotional: What on Earth Are We Here For?

Rate this book
The 40 Days of Community five-session devotional―part of the Living with Purpose small group Bible study by Rick Warren―is a dynamic individual or small group study that will help you learn how to fulfill God’s five purposes for your life. By unpacking the biblical support for each of the five purposes (fellowship, spiritual growth, service, worship, and sharing the good News) you’ll learn the ways it applies to you and your circle of influence, and how you can use this knowledge to benefit God’s kingdom. Through it, Warren also explains how God planned for Christians to fulfill his purposes in community with each other in our church families, small groups, and in the world as a whole. Why did God plan it this way? Because we’re better together! 40 Days of Community will deepen your understanding of how God uses community for your own good and growth, as well as help you cultivate deeper relationships with those around you. Learn to fulfill God’s purposes … discover how we are better together. This 40-day Devotional Journal is designed for use with the 40 Days of Community Participant's Guide and 40 Days of Community DVD . Sessions

I gave myself grace when I started this book. I planned to do it every day for each day to finish in 42 days. I purposely put the dates in so anyone who has started and hasn’t finished could be inspired to pick it up again. I took lots of notes and really gave myself the time in the last two weeks to dive in. It’s a book of beautiful reminders. Feeding your mind with the word of the Bible is never a bad decision.

Handy little devotional/ study book which majors on loving one another in small groups and serving and witnessing more powerfully from that sense of family and identity in Christ together. Warren employs his usual style of cherry picking verses from a constellation of Bible versions and there isn’t any passage based exegesis but there are some great nuggets and insights.

"Abraham was old, Jacob was insecure, Leah was unattractive, Joseph was abused, Moses stuttered, Gideon was poor, Samson was codependent, Rahab was immoral, David had an affair and all kinds of family problems, Elijah was suicidal, Jeremiah was depressed, Jonah was reluctant, Naomi was a widow, John the Baptist was eccentric to say the least, Peter was impulsive and hot-tempered, Martha worried a lot, the Samaritan woman had several failed marriages, Zacchaeus was unpopular, Thomas had doubts, Paul had poor health, and Timothy was timid. That is quite a variety of misfits, but God used each one of them in his service. He will use you, too, if you stop making excuses." - Rick Warren‎

A Bíblia é o manual do construtor, o próprio Deus.

As is typical between Rick Warren and me, I don't agree with everything he says in this. And the fact that he uses so many versions to shore up his points bothers me a bit. When I look some of these verses up in my Bible, I find that it's different from what he indicates. Not that his points aren't valid, but sometimes the verse, taken in context or read in their original language, is different from what he presents. For instance, and as everyone knows, there are far more words for "love" in Greek than in English, so the love the Christian is to have for his worldly community is different from the love he'd have for his siblings in Christ, which is different from the love he'd have for family. Yet the three types are treated the same in this book.

There were other things, but overall the book was good. Lots of great teaching points, but quite a few disappointments too.

Our small group is going through this study for the second time in my lifetime. Seasons in our lives have changed and this study helps when we are no longer as volunteering as we once were due to health/age. PDL is very resourceful for all ages.

This little booklet was being given out at my church. I loved Rick Warren's book, The Purpose Driven Life, so I decided to check out this one, too. This booklet seemed to be a condensed version of The Purpose Driven Life.

I love that this book is a very quick and easy read and is filled with lots of wisdom and ideas, but I could not give this 5 stars because I was really turned off by the line on the first page, written in bold: "you won't discover your life's meaning by looking within yourself." Honestly, I stopped right there and put the book away for a few weeks before I decided to continue on with it. As the author of a book about self-love and someone who found God and my life's purpose by looking within myself, it was hard for me to get past that line. I believe there are as many paths to God as there are people, and it is a turnoff to me when someone thinks that their way is the only right way. I'm glad I did eventually pick the book back up and continue with it because there is a lot of good content in the book. I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but it does make you think.

Our church was called upon to read and study Rick Warren's book. I read the previous one a few years ago and this one added a couple more chapters to it. It gives you a lot of personal things to think about and can truly help you grow as part of the Body of Christ. One of the things that has helpd me is my focus. I often tend to dwell on one thing or circumstance or problem. Now I am trying to focus on the Lord and trust Him in every single area of my life. Not there yet, but working on it. I think I underlined quite a bit so I can easily reference whenever I need to.

This is a great book, I have recommended this book to anybody who is starting to see the light at the and of the tunnel; that moment when you feel you are so close but at the same time to far to figure out your purpose in this life.

The author does a wonderful Job because in those 40 days he helps you to realize/recognize why we are here in this hearth; the lectures and recommendations to ponder on them, videos and to me what really would get me was the reflection " how could I do this better "

I was reading this when I sprained my ankle in the weekend. This book encourages me in how I could be a loving person and serve others. It gives me a new perspective to how I could care about others. It's a very practical book about how to grow to be a more loving person.

Yes, he's conservative and evangelical, but he had some interesting theories and deep insights nonetheless: ones that are far off the beaten hipster path and surprisingly refreshing, almost contrarian.

I think this is an abridged version of "Purpose driven life". The particular message I tend to get is Mr Warren's direct fingers pointing at the "WORD" . Yea, the word of God

I did not believe it, it is just one humans idea of what is expected of us..no human being can tell anyone what will happen when we die or what god is like!

Didn't resonate, love and peace are all nice in thought but try working in a demanding job having to provide for your family while the world around a you goes insane. Not practical.
