She misses her family and friends. Will she ever be able to accept her own death? Amateur Angel was an interesting read for me. I was not expecting as light of a read as it was. It was different than what I've been reading in that it's YA. I classify it as a book that would be great lying in the sun by the pool. I also, as a side note, thought it paralleled a great Meg Ryan movie, City of Angels although much less intense. It was funny at times and the plot was fresh and unique making it an easy read. The writing was simple but the dialogue didn't flow easily at some points for me. Ashley piqued my interest in this a little later in the book; she was just as spunky and sarcastic as she was naive and vulnerable about love. At first, I was not sure what to think of her being so judgmental. Cannon is both endearing and infuriating. While Ashley was working through her death, Cannon was working through his life. They grew and changed by the ending so their development was good. It was an interesting dynamic between two of them, I cannot recall a book where the two main characters did not interact. I thought the ending was interesting too. It's bittersweet and I didn't know whether to be pleased or sad. I like the surprise element of that because I wasn't sure what to expect.
What began as a story about a regular teen girl turns quickly into a very different young adult paranormal story. Ashley is a likable character who battles with an expected turn of events in her life that throws her completely into a new heavenly world. She faces not only challenges of a young woman entering adulthood but as a guardian to a famous rock star.
She handles this without much grace at first. Her rebelling becomes a little tiresome at times but as expected it would be pretty devastating to have this happen. I did grow to like her a lot and I liked the honesty in Cannon's character. We see good, bad and what's in between in his being in the public eye and the pressures that go along with that kind of life style. A little slow but not without some very enjoyable moments that lead up to a different ending than I would have predicted. 3.5 stars

These days, when you hear a book is about angels, you’re thinking fallen angels almost immediately.
That’s not what this book is. And that’s a good thing.
Our main character is an angel, but she’s hardly a fallen one. Instead, this book tackles a realm of angels I, at least, have never read one YA book about: guardian angels. That right there was refreshing enough to dedicate me to the story.
It was a good thing, too, because if you’re a person who cuts off books after a certain point, you might not have made it through the beginning. This book begins with a few jarring leaps of faith and Ashley not being too connectable. Once that part is past, though, the book settles into a fun ride and Ashley starts calming down. (To be fair, she’s dead and is now responsible for making a guy be not dead with no idea how. I’d whine a little too. )
It was really fun reading about Ashley acclimating to her new powers. A few too many things were left unexplained for me, but at the same time there were a couple of peoples’ guardian angels who popped in to do some explaining for me. Though these could have easily turned into infodumping moments–because these interactions were so brief and needed to give out a lot of information–they were consistently broken up by living world drama and the fact that the guardian angels have to stay within ten feet of their humans. Cannon wasn’t exactly a social guy, and even when people were there they didn’t want to stay long. Ashley was legitimately left to figure out a lot on her own.
One thing I really wish is that Cannon Michaels had been fleshed out more. I felt like I didn’t see enough of Cannon’s “good” side to justify Ashley falling so deeply in love with him. There were a lot of little details there that could have been something bigger, but I didn’t feel like they connected into a bigger picture.
Though I can’t say much about the end, of course, I can say that it left me with all of the feelings. I have no idea what will happen in the sequel–because there HAS to be a sequel, right?–because there are so many different ways this can be turned. The door is wide open for a whole new adventure, and I really like that.
All and all, I found this book to be a light, fluffy read. It was a fresh idea and a fun, easy read. It lacked a little on the world building and characterization side, but since the book always kept rolling it didn’t seriously bother me. I didn’t expect the ending, and I certainly can’t tell you what’s coming next.
I wasn't really sure what to expect from Amateur Angel, but I thought a story about love and guardian angels would be something nice and lighthearted to read during summer.
This book is written from the first person perspective of Ashley, the angel, which gives the reader more of a connection to her. Ashley herself is pretty clueless from the beginning so you feel like you're going on a journey with her as she learns the ropes of being a guardian angel. I thought that her character could've been developed a little better as sometimes I thought her feelings were a little rushed and out of the blue. I also thought that she settled into being a guardian angel a little too fast for someone who had just died and been thrust into a new and strange existence but she is an interesting character nonetheless.
The other main character, Cannon Michaels, is a little harder to figure out. He is quite an unpredictable character which makes the story all the more interesting as, of course, it can be quite difficult to look after someone if you have no idea what they're going to do next. Ashley has quite a hard job keeping up with Cannon and his rock star lifestyle but as she is stuck within a 10 foot radius of him she soon gets to know him quite well.
I loved that the guardian angels could never been seen or heard but were silent protectors. Or at least, that's what we're led to believe. The book centres around Ashley and Cannon and their 'relationship', though, of course, they don't really have one given that Ashley is basically invisible to him. I found this a little frustrating because I've never read a book where the two protagonists never actually interact with each other, but I suppose that was refreshing.
The ending was quite unexpected for me and I was a little disappointed with it. As I was reading the book, I kept imagining different scenarios for how this would end but I couldn't predict what actually happened. I suppose this is also a good thing because I like it when a book surprises me and it gets a bit annoying when all the books you read are predictable and repetitive.
Amateur Angel is like no book that I've ever read before and it provided me with an interesting and quick summer read. The writing simply flows off the page so I was done with this book in no time. I liked that the story wasn't too heavy and it was just a quick and easy read.

This book made me smile, laugh and even tear up a bit. What a great debut novel for Karri! I really enjoyed reading this book and loved it's lighthearted tone. It was fun and witty, while also dealing with acceptance and the importance of not wasting a moment. Amateur Angel has an original plot, one that I thought was really interesting. I always like to see what an author's take on angels is going to be and Karri's was really great! The main character of this story, Ashley, was a bit frustrating for me, all though not in a bad way. I wanted her to magically excel at being a guardian angel--admittedly my expectations were a bit high--but then there wouldn't be much of a story would there? I appreciated that Ashley does grow as a character and begins to accept not only her separation from her mortal life but also her new role as a guardian angel. I ended up liking her character more and more as I was able to relate to her and understand the frustration of her situation. Actually, I think Ashley handled becoming an angel rather well for someone so young. Her first assignment, Cannon, is also her rock star crush which begins to make things a bit complicated. She forms a short of dependency on Cannon, to help her cope. Cannon's character has many different sides to him which made him both likable and irritating. I got tears in my eyes when he visits the special needs children. You can tell, that despite his apparent short comings, he is a wonderful person with a big heart. You also get to experience Cannon's growth into a grounded individual as the story progresses. Ultimately, Ashley and Cannon fall in love. But, as his guardian angel, Ashley can not be with him the way she would like. I was, and still am, hoping that they will find a way to be together! Amateur Angel has a great ending that leaves the reader wanting more! Karri has created some great characters that I look forward to following on their next journey. This book was a quick and entertaining read for young adults. I would gladly recommend it!
Before I started reading YA PNR about angels, I definitely didn’t think of angels to be super-hot or super-powerful beings who happen to have beautiful wings and souls, and also happen to be hopelessly in love with a character. I simply thought about them as heavenly beings who always watched over us. Amateur Angel focuses on this exactly, in a pretty unique fashion that I have to say I eventually became fond of.
To be frank, in the beginning I didn’t think I would enjoy this book. I disliked the heroine since she seemed so focused on the things that didn’t matter, and seemed so judgmental and misunderstanding. It was a bit boring to – there wasn’t much going on, other than some chatter between fellow guardian angels and some massages.
But as the book progressed, I became fonder of both Cannon and Ashley. As a guardian angel, Ashley seemed to grow stronger as a person and understood her duty a lot more. Her emotions were also flushed out beautifully, and her love grew more tender and less like the insta-love I initially was annoyed at. I also liked the different sides of Cannon the readers eventually get to see. His past and hopes were endearing, and they were well developed in order to form a great story. It ended pretty sweetly, and also pretty sadly, but it was a pretty well written ending.
The side characters were also pretty interesting. I was a big fan of Jonathan and Will – they constantly supported the main two characters, and their relationships were pretty interesting. On a side note, I liked how the author selected Will’s identity. Since I’m familiar with Will’s identity, I was able to guess it, but for a lot of readers, it will be a pretty sweet surprise(;
Overall, although Amateur Angel may have a rocky beginning, it definitely develops into a sweet story with a bittersweet ending. I would recommend this to romance fans, or people that are fan of angel books, but may be looking for something different.
I had a lot of fun with this book. Lots smiles, some giggles, and a couple of heartaches. I love the title and the cover. This was a real feel good, easy read. The story is cute and original, very refreshing.
Ashley had a pretty bad day, she died. She finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up becoming a guardian angel with no welcome packet and not training. She is on her own. The only redeeming part of the entire day, she is the guardian angel of her favorite rock star. Fun as it sounded to Ashley she discovers more then she wanted to about her rock idol. If it’s not hard enough to be a guardian angel without training assigned to a reckless maniac, she goes and falls in love with him.
I really liked Ashley’s characters. She is very sweet, innocent, and naïve girl who tries to make the best of a very difficult and confusing situation. She does not give up easily and tries to learn as much as she can in the field. Cannon is the guy you would love to hate but just can’t for some reason. Most of the time he is a selfish jerk but he does have his soft moments. I found myself rooting for him throughout the entire book. Even though these two characters did not get a lot of interaction, their relationship was very important to the story and I felt it was developed very well. I felt very close to both characters and found it easy to laugh, love, and live with them.
The story was well paced and moved along smoothly. The style was great, detailed but not overly and the plot was very intriguing. It was easy to get into the flow and keep those pages turning. The ending was not at all what I expected but that was definitely a plus in the end. Very unpredictable.
All in all, I really liked the book and even though it doesn’t seem to be any plans for another book, I would love to read more of Ashley and Cannon’s story. *hint hint
The other day I mentioned to someone that I haven’t been interested in “angel” books at all. Then, this book tour suddenly kinda fell into my lap and I thought, yea, why not!? I always say that I pretty much read everything so here’s an opportunity! Plus, it kinda reminded me that old angel tv series, Highway to Heaven, which I actually quite like (I may be showing my age a bit here).
At first the title really didn’t impress me- I didn’t particularly like ‘amateur’, somehow it just didn’t paint the right picture for me. However, now, it just totally made sense. Plus, after reading the book, the ‘professional’ angels are just so BORING! I definitely will not be looking to work as Professional Angel. It might be blasphemy but I’d rather be a Dark but Fun-loving Vampire than a Hands-Off Professional Angel.
Take an Amateur Angel who falls into the job by accident with no training whatsoever and place her in a role where she is looking after her idol in life – well, we’ve just got ourselves an entertaining tale. Ashley was only 18 with a somewhat bright future. She’s not ‘special’ in any way nor is she ‘bad’ in any way, she’s just an average girl but to die at 18, on the threshold of womanhood, that just takes the icing of the cake! On another level though, she gets to be with Cannon Michaels all the time. Although, maybe that’s not as good as she thought it’d be.
It’s such a sweet but humorous tale of finding self & one of love; of not judging what you see; of looking deeper than the surface. It is a heart-warming funny story with a touch of the voyeuristic (in a good funny way) – every girl’s dream to being that close to their idol (you’d have to stay within 10 feet!).
Oh. My. Goodness. The ending. Ah. Oh. Uh. I really don’t know what to say. Just… Watch Out!

My review~ I received this book in exchange for an honest review! First off I would like to say that I adore the cover. It's pretty and cute! This is not your typical fallen angel read. The author takes the angel concept into a whole different way. This is a great story about "Everything happens for a reason" theme. There is always a reason why things happen the way they do and the doors that they open along the way. It is a truly enjoyable and humorous read! This is the first book that I have read by this author and plan to read her other works! I give this 5 star because it is well written and the characters are well done. I also love the story and story line not counting the descriptive nature of the read.

To go from driving your car to ending being in a strange place and told you are dead is overwhelming enough but when you get in the wrong queue and end up being your favourite singer Guardian Angel is something else entirely.
Ashley wasn’t ready to be a guardian angel, she hadn’t had any training at all. She didn’t have a clue on what she was doing. Luckily she met other guardian angels with their assignments so asked them what she is meant to do.
I loved the book. I think it is every young girls dream to be with their celebrity crush although not quite in the way that Ashley did. I really liked Ashley she was young she was funny and quite grown up really for her age. Her assignment Cannon seemed to be quite nasty to most people he spoke to but inside he was so unhappy. Nothing what Ashley had thought he would be and in truth I am sure none of us think that our celeb crush could be like that. Maybe because when they are on the TV or at a concert they jump into a roll that they play. There was some sadness in the book you could feel the pain of both characters. There were also funny occasions which made me giggle and there were some surprises along the way too.
This book was charming and disappointing at different times. Ashley as an amateur and immature angel is flawed, and her attempt to reconcile to her death and to her new responsibilities as an angel parallel Cannon's need to reconcile to his life and the responsibilities that have been put on him. Both Ashley and Cannon worked through their issues by the end of the story (Ashley may have room for improvement though) and in that way the ending was satisfying. I think Cannon's journey though is more touching, as he has these two sides to his character and his unpleasant side comes out more often than not. And when he realizes his mistakes you really feel that his character can finally turn his life around and enjoy all the good things he has been blessed with. The ending however left me emotionally unsatisfied, and I hope that there is another book coming in this series because I do love my happy endings! There are some plot points that I question and I felt was not resolved in this book, and the dialogue sometimes flowed a little unnaturally, but overall it was an interesting and bittersweet story.
Most of the YA novels featuring angels these days deal with fallen angels or the like. 'Amateur Angel' takes the topic of angels and breathes new life into it by making a light and fun story. The story was innovative and fresh, which made it a quick read.
The characters were all interesting with unique quirks - especially the main character Ashley. These little oddities along with her somewhat sarcastic dialogue makes her really likeable to the reader. I thought that the story was well written and had a great flow, which made it a really enjoyable book. Fans of angel fiction who are looking for a lighter read should definitely pick this one up.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great read. It was funny, refreshing, and sweet. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next installment. Ashley gets into the wrong line in heaven and quite by surprise become a Guardian Angel. And not just any G.A., she is G.A. for Cannon Michaels, lead singer for her favorite band and her crush! Since she got into the wrong line she has no idea what to do and makes many mistakes along the way. Will she be able to protect Cannon or will her crush on him cause problems? I would definitely recommend this book. I guarantee you will love Ashley as much as I do!
I really enjoyed reading this book and it held my interest the whole way through. I'm an avid reader and still a kid at heart so I read a lot of YA books. I LOVED this one and adored Ashley. I can't wait to read the sequel!
