Dear Author,
He would give anything to go back to the start of the day and do things differently but there's no way to do that. Or is there?

My Review: Time travel giveth, time travel taketh away...this charming story of hot men in a physics lab falling in love with each others' brains does something one seldom sees: makes the price of Happily Ever After real.

About 6500 words long, it's a good fast read, and it's got that extra something that makes the time spent move quickly.

Rating: 4* of five

The Publisher Says: "My name is David Brandstetter. I'm a claims investigator for the Medallion Life Insurance Company." He handed her a card. She didn't glance at it. "I'm looking for Peter Oats," he said.

"He's not here. I wish he were. Maybe you can help me. The police don't seem to care."

She was April Stannard. Her lover, Peter's father, had died. April believed he'd been murdered.

Dave Brandstetter's investigation takes him through the rare-book world, to backstage at a community theatre, to the home of a world-famous television performer. Along the way, Dave soon comes to agree with April.

My Review: Small-town California has a lot of atmosphere, according to Hansen; I don't remember it that way, but I was young and miserable, so I'll go with the man who found there something that led to this description of an old mill made into a theater:

The waterwheel was twice a man’s height, wider than a man’s two stretched arms. The timbers, braced and bolted with rusty iron were heavy, hand-hewn, swollen with a century of wet. Moss bearded the paddles, which dripped as they rose. The sounds were good. Wooden stutter like children running down a hall at the end of school. Grudging axle thud like the heartbeat of a strong old man.

Beautiful.

It's with this book, second in the series, that Hansen's chops come fully into play. He's here to wow you, and he's got the story to keep you sitting right there flipping pages. April, the bereaved, is Rita Hayworth in my mind; Oates, the dead guy, looks like John Garfield; Peter, the son and heir, is Cabaret-era Michael York; and so on and so on. (Eve, Oates' ex-wife, is Barbara Stanwyck.) I do this a lot, cast the perfect movie cast as I read along. But this time it felt as if it was all done for me. Oates' murderer, when revealed, was a surprise to me even though this was a re-read. And the actor I'd put in the role was perfect...no testament to my skills, just an example of how beautifully Hansen draws his characters.

Dave's got a man, too...how amazing for the 1970s! I so wish this had been a TV series. Magnum PI only gay! *sigh* What might have been....

Dr. Benjamin Hall can't believe his eyes (and luck) when Dr. Nathan Garrerra, one of the foremost theoretical physicists of the century, is looking for him on his not-so-well-known Theoretical Physics Lab. Turns out Nate has read Ben's paper and is interested with Ben's work in special relativistic time dilation which could enable time travel. They start to work together and along the way develops relationship as well. However, one argument leads to Nate walking out in anger, and ends up being a victim of accident. Now, Ben only has one goal in mind with their time-travel research. He needs to go back in time to save his lover.

....

I'm not huge on science fiction stories, but there's something with the idea of time travel that I find intriguing. Plus, Ben is doing it to save his lover. Awwww. Isn't there anything more wonderful than trying to defy fate for love?

I think the writing is wonderful, even for a short story. The beginning is fused with humor, as Ben is starstruck with Nate's appearance in his lab (love Ben's inner monologue, it makes me giggled).

I like the 'resolution' in the end, because I don't think you can easily go back in time without some sort of consequence. It's one of the good ones I read from the "Love is Always Write" event so far.

I don't feel like I know nick. Don't really know Ben either. I felt like a lot of the time was focused on the research and time travel aspect and the characters were never really developed.
After it was over I felt like I got the beginning and end to a story but the middle was left out... It's an enjoyable story, and free, but I wanted more to really get into it.

Offered for FREE from the M/M Romance Group, Love Is Always Write: Volume Ten.

2.5 stars Interesting story and executed fairly well for being so short. We didn't really get to know the characters too well, even the narrator, so that held me back a little from getting too invested. I wish the only sex scene that we got to see hadn't been a blow-job scene. Not that there's anything wrong with BJ's but they can be less personal I think. It was fine but it kind of jumped form that to their big fight. We definitely needed more in between relationship stuff when they were happy.

Loved how you dealt with the paradox of time travel...that is a place I often have to suspend my disbelief when reading time travel stories but you did it wonderfully. Ben and Nate were adorable together. Loved this story!

I loved the sweetness of this story, it was simple and touching. For me it held everything I love, emotion, details, amazing characters, and a really good plot. I'll be reading it again.

Time Travelling with consequences and a dash of smut. It's weird how this story was rich, the characters likeable, and, in my personal opinion even though I love smut, it was not really necessary. What little we see of their sex life is sudden, just a release of endorphin from their successful discovery findings. I would have love to see this as a longer story, so we can see more of their interactions before they get to the point of the discovery and the fight. The time travelling aspect and the science fiction was done perfectly and made this story amazing.

The ending is rushed. Everything is crammed into big chunks of dialogue. The beginning and middle were delightful.

If only we really could go back and fix things to make them better. Maybe things wouldn't be quite so bad. Good story.

I can't help but feel that this could have been a Wonderful Story About two Physics falling in love, without all the unnecessary time travel stuff.

The perfect touch of sci-fi wrapped in a hot contemporary story! What’s not to love about two intelligent physicists working together to make the discovery of the century – okay, it doesn’t hurt that they’re both sexy as sin to boot! I loved how Ben and Nate’s relationship is what ended up propelling their study forward into reality; how it both tore them apart and yet was the catalyst for bringing them back together. The fact that there were consequences to deal with from the time travel was a very realistic outcome. Wonderful story – thank you so much!!!

Dr Ben and Nathan meet both study test on Theoretical Physics so mainly time travel things. So things progress fast and end so quick. One day nathan died and Ben goes back in time to save him can he save him or lose him forever. What would you do? I loved this so short to the point but wouldnt mind reading more about these guys.

Although not typically a sci-fi fan, I really enjoyed this story. And one of my favorite movie quotes makes it into the story too! Liked the ending as well - especially as it was not all sunshine and roses, but exacted a price. Well done!

There's a lot of sci-fi-goodness packed into this short story. It was a quick read but I didn't feel like it needed anything more, as I often do with the shorter ones. Well done Kiernan.

Nice idea. Quickly executed. Well done but there was more emphasis on physics then on the relationship. I didn't feel the connection.
