Cold Vengeance

Rate this book
They'd survived everything the Vietcong could throw at them. Now they'd throw it back ... at the American renegade who'd betrayed them. The Black Berets had to hand it to Parkes, their former CIA case officer. First he'd sent them on a suicide mission to Vietnam. Then he'd sent some CIA hitmen to finish them off when the enemy couldn't. And the moment they set foot stateside, the world's meanest mercenaries found that Parkes had arranged another lethal welcome.Well, they'd never liked Parkes much. But how were they going to tell him? First they had to find him, and that would take Beeker, Rosie, Cowboy, Harry, and Marty, from the bayous of Louisiana to an academy of terror in the Libyan desert, where they'd get a chance to say just what they had in mind--with bullets and a body bag.

I was really excited to jump into book 2 of the Black Berets series, after finishing the first book, because it was no nonsense all action from start to finish, the type of book I like. With my hopes high, I jumped into book 2 and found myself… a bit bored.

The book is only 167 pages, a short read, but it took me three weeks to finish this one, simply because I wasn’t excited to read the next chapter. I would finish a chapter and say, “eh, I’ll come back later.” We pick up with our group of mercs where the last story left off.

They are still on the quest for revenge (keeping my review spoiler free) and ready to solve their problem any way possible. The book starts off with some violence and action, but then it just, drags. The action stops, and we find ourselves in a long series of waypoints our hero’s must take in order to get to the main goal of the story.

It sounds more confusing than it is. Once you start reading you will understand what I mean. For more than half the book, you are following three of the berets searching for “work.” The other two are focused on training the small boy from the fist book. For me, I found the boy storyline long and boring. Anytime the book took me from the three berets, back to the farm house with the other two and the boy, I let out an inner groan.

I will say this. Once the book finally drops the boy from the story and gets all the berets in on the action, the book picks up like the first. And that’s what’s so disappointing/frustrating with this book. The author has such a cool way of writing about war, death and killing, but by the time you finally get to enjoy his writing style the book is over.

The first book had way better action and death than this book, but the story about the main antagonist in this book was far better. Both had their strong points, but the first book was the better of the two. The book does have me believing that the results of this book will play a major role in the upcoming novels, so I am still excited to pick up book three and see where it goes.

I give this one a 4 out of 5, and def worth reading, even if it has some boring parts!

Second book in the series and it’s even better than the first.
