Slim but surprisingly thorough primer on John Woolman's political and religious beliefs. The editors include a thorough introduction, editorial notes, maps, bibliographies, and a historical timeline comparing events in Woolman's life to events in the British Empire. This book is meant for undergraduate courses, so the book mainly consists of excerpts from Woolman's longer works. For longer Woolman documents, check out Phillips Moulton's critical edition of Woolman's "Journal" and James Proud's "John Woolman and the Affairs of Truth."
This book re-awakened me to the breadth of John Woolman's concern for all beings, the depth of his radical trust in the goodness of God, and the intricacy of his systems thinking. I highly recommend it.
The readings go beyond what is contained in most editions of his Journal, and the maps, letters by Woolman's contemporaries, and historical comments are very helpful.
