Really wanted to give this at least three stars as the writing is well done, and the subplot of the heroine authenticating stolen Renaissance artwork was a nice change from the usual nannies, PA’s and downtrodden office workers. KH also does a nice job having the heroine reflect on the myth of Leda’s rape by Zeus and her subsequent children. Did not know Clytemnestra and Helen were a result of the union. I really think the Persephone/Hades myth would have been a better way to go as the h is so trapped and there are issues with her own daughter.

Anyhoo, the book was a chore to get through and there were issues with the heroine.
The H has own issues as he has inherited a vast criminal empire along with the stolen artwork and wants nothing to do with it. Family drama with his horrible father, a bullying older brother who is not what he seems and a dead sister. Not a lot of laughs with this one.

Both characters are dreary and half-glass full types which dragged down the story for me. I am going to read the next one as this had glimmers of promise. Just hope KH lightens up a little.

Below are Leonardo da Vinci’s reputed pictures of Leda and the swan (Zeus)and one with her children. As the book details the originals have been destroyed or lost so these are reproductions based on sketches, etc

I'm having a great run of original, well-written Harlequin Presents lately -- seems like they've changed more than just their awful titles. This one also kind of plays with the genre conventions, which I love: Grace's past is right out of a traditional HP, except in her case, it worked out very badly. (As it almost certainly would in most real life cases.) When she meets Khalis, she's quite reasonably frightened of his inflexible, unforgiving attitude towards his harsh family, one of several challenges they have to overcome.

I was vastly amused by the series blurb that accompanied this book: "When both are confronted with the pure caresses of innocent beauty, will they grasp their final chance at redemption?" There is a redemption theme, but calling Grace an innocent beauty is classic feeble publisher misdirection, since in fact she has behaved very badly by heroine lights -- in what's probably a first for HPs she:

The angst in this story comes close to going over the top -- although the set-up is well done, the guilt and self-loathing Grace feels still seems excessive, as does Khalis's reaction to what she did. Also, what Grace goes through is so painful to contemplate, this almost ended up on my "too sad" shelf. More positively, a bit of a twist cleverly saves the story from seeming too much of a fairy tale, and except for one small point, the ending is a model of restraint. Recommended.

I almost didn't read this book... but I am so glad I did as this book is simply brilliant.

The hero has to be one of the best heroes I have read in a very long time! He is so open and loving towards the heroine, and not at all cruel and domineering. I can't tell you how great it is to read a hero who is not just interested in some casual brief fling with the heroine (or any other woman that croses his path!).

This is certainly a risky book, some readers probably won't like the heroines past actions, but I applaud Kate Hewitt for doing something different. I liked that she didn't resort to having her heroine make excuses for her behaviour, instead she owned up to her faults and accepted the consequences.

I tire of reading about lily-white heroines, we're none of us perfect, so for me this book was very refreshing.

This book is packed full of angst and emotion, centred around a beautiful and engaging love story that almost had me in tears, of both joy and sadness.

The writing is flawless and evocative, I was especially drawn to the depth to which the author describes the heroine relating to the myth of 'Leda and the Swan'. This book sucks you in wholly and doesn't rush towards and unnecessarily 'perfect' ending.

I loved it.

I really wanted to like this book, liked the storyline, the hero, the heroine, then as I read futher into the story,my most major of stumbling blocks.Marital sexual infidelity on the part of the heroine while married to her first husband, not the hero with her handyman .During this affair, she apparantely neglected her young child.
That is a no no for me and my enjoyment slowly went down hill.I forced myself to finish only because i wanted to find out about the presumed dead brother. His story looks interesting.
I did not like the epilogue at all,it was left hanging.

Absolutely loved this book! Grace is a strong, sensitive heroine, who is genuinely good at her job and takes pride in her career. (Sure wish Lisa Kleypas could write modern heroines like this!) Khalis is a little harder to like, he's the "ruthless tycoon" but seems awfully squishy at times. Still the two of them have a real connection and the artwork descriptions are really beautiful!

Kate Hewitt is a unique and Mills & Boon author, who is not afraid to write romance with a bit more edge than usual and that, apart from her really great writing, is what makes her one of my top favorite author in this genre.

The Darkest Secrets she tackles the subject of marriage infidelity by the heroine, which is just so taboo normally – the heroine tends to be a young, naïve virgin and Grace Turner is certainly not that. What I liked about Grace is discovering that she makes no excuses for her behavior and has taken full responsibility for her actions and is prepared to move forward with her life not feeling bitter and twisted.

But how will Khalis Tannous, who has hired her to do some work on his family’s art collection, react if he ever finds out the truth about her.
As their relationship progresses and she finds herself falling deeply in love with him, she is tormented by Khalis reaction if she discloses the truth about her marriage. And the longer she prolonged telling him, the deeper her fears and insecurities become.

I found Khalis a very likeable here. An alpha-hero with a heart and admired the ethical way he wanted to make good of the wrong his shady family had done before being killed unexpectedly, leaving him to sort out the mess left behind. I did picture a different reaction from him when he finds out Grace’s secrets because I had felt he was a much more kind and gently male but no. Reacts rather badly to say the least…but I guess most men would do the same.

This is a remarkable story, filled with sadness, heartbreak, (the end am me almost crying) but at the same time so uplifting when you see that a person can find redemption and is able to take a chance at love again.
A great addition to my Kate Hewitt’s book collection.

Book Synopsis:

I kept waiting and wanting to like this book. My hopes were high almost to the very end and then they were crushed by the big reveal.

Spoilers below.

* Her darkest secret was her affair with the property manager during her unhappy marriage.
* She eludes to an unhappy and possibly abusive marriage, but in fact, she could have left her "prison" at any time. It was her own weakness that kept her there.
* Instead of focusing on her child she had an affair because of her unhappiness.
* She tells of a child who never slept and cried all the time while complaining about the bossiness of the nanny that was hired to help her. Apparently she was "in a fog" during this difficult time as a new mother and does not remember much about her affair.

Khalis deserves a better heroine than the one he got.

No sé.

I was disappointed a bit. I expected more background, guess I'm a picky girl. I love stories that have the richness of background. It makes me fall in love with he characters and the emotions they portray. I just feel this didn't have enough and even the epilogue was very quick. The story just ended abruptly but on a happy note. Happy note or not, I didn't appreciate the end, which in turn made me iffy towards the book and the overall outcome. I'm sure once you read it, you can judge it for yourself.

This was a frustrating read for me. Hewitt has a great voice for Presents, and the story was technically well-written. Unfortunately, the story itself traded heavily in regret, remorse and guilt and after the truth behind their feelings come out the heroine reads like a weak-ass martyr.

As the title implies, this book is a romance with a dark edge. No spoilers, you'll have to read it yourself. Won this from Goodreads and having never read a Harlequin UK I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleased, it was a quick and entertaining read although it had its thinking moments. Everyone deserves another chance seemed to be the theme and a good one. It also had lovely words like 'torch' instead of 'flashlight', so cool.

Although The Darkest of Secrets is what I might call an 'easy read' it's also quite a frustrating read. Khalis, Grace, and also Loukas, make many a decision based on their negative emotions. Whether it be fear, regret, grief, or humiliation, they make some infuriating decisions to view as a bystander. Oddly enough, Grace and Khalis also portray great emotional and intellectual maturity and have the capacity to rectify past decisions and redeem the story. It felt kind of like not riding but watching a rollercoaster.

I loved the Hero Khalis, he was macho, sexy and a sweetheart. It's amazing how KH made him both alpha and sweet. The heroine on the other was unique she made a huge error and paid for th at mistake. I loved the story and the characters, however it was a bit slow in the beginning but the last few chapters had me glued. I hope I get to read K halis's brother's story,Ammar. It's a 3.5 🌟 for me.

shouldn’t have enjoyed that as much as I did but it had a cute ending and was a nice, easier read than other books this year

I stand by my earlier statement though

I know Mills and Boon isn’t real life - far from it. It’s romantic fiction where impossible things can happen. But there has to be credibility and every plot device in this book just kicked me out of the story with the implausibility.

Not in any particular order:-
1. What court in the western world would grant custody to a father without total proof that the mother was ill- treating the child? Or only allow visitation by the mother once a month? Even had the mother been guilty of abusing her child - weekly visitations under expert supervision would be a minimum entitlement.
2. What 26 year old is so naive as to fall for a man like Loukas?
3. What 26 year old would stay with a man like Loukas? Why didn’t she simply walk away - which she was free to do?
4.what 32 year old (Grace’s age when she meets Khalis) - simply puts up with the situation? Did she not get access to legal help? She is TSTL.
5. Why on earth couldn’t Grace tell Khalis why she wasn’t prepared to get involved - ie the risk of losing her daughter.

The way Grace pre-judged Khalis and constantly compared him to her ex husband just irritated me beyond belief.

I don’t like stories where the woman is a weakling or thinks she deserves to be punished for her actions. I was interested in Khalis but Grace irritated me endlessly.

Overall, this was a thoroughly depressing book and by the end, a I had almost lost the will to live.

It’s such a shame because the author writes some really brilliant scenes and I loved huge chunks of the story and the development of their relationship. The external conflict overwhelmed the internal conflict and ruined it for me. Five stars for the writing and one star for the ridiculous plot, so three stars overall.

THE DARKEST OF SECRETS by author Kate Hewitt is a Mills & Boon Modern/Harlequin Presents release for May 2012.

Escaping her disastrous past Grace Turner tried hard to remake herself and made a name as an assessor of renaissance paintings.

After inheriting his dead father’s company, business tycoon Khalis Tannous just wanted to sell off everything. Then he comes across some valuable paintings which he suspected were stolen. He hired the best assessor there was. And the best in the business was Grace.

She was good at her job but couldn’t trust Khallis to do the right thing. And the attraction between them was off the richter scales! Why wouldn’t Grace let themselves explore the simmering attraction between them? Why was she afraid? Who was pulling Grace’s strings? And Khallis definitely wanted to explore what was between them, yet why was Grace resisting? If Grace opens up her heart to him, would Khallis forgive and forget?

THE DARKEST OF SECRETS has a unique premise. Author Kate Hewitt tackled a taboo subject of infidelity in a marriage and wove this story as a dramatic, at times heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting story about taking chance on love’s devastating choices, redemption and triumphing against the odds which will make readers smile as well as shed tears.

My rating 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I don't usually read romance novels, so I don't know that I'm the best judge since I don't really have a huge foundation for comparison. That being said, this book was about what I'd expected for a romance novel. Concerning romance novels, I don't know that I will ever be able to take seriously any story where characters fall in love within days, as it just seems so unrealistic to me. But then again, perhaps that fantasy aspect is what attracts readers to this genre. I imagine that if I was in my mid-30s and divorced or single, I probably would have enjoyed this book a lot more.

Also, I wonder if I would have enjoyed the story more if I had learned Grace's secret at the beginning of the story rather than at the end. All of the self-loathing and angst in its repetition just kind of drove me nuts. I think I would have appreciated the feelings of Grace a lot more if I had learned the reasons behind them much sooner.

Overall this book is what it is. If you typically enjoy the romance genre, you'll likely enjoy this book more than my rating suggests.

Disclaimer: I won a free copy of this book from GoodReads First Reads Program.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when this book came in the mail. The package was so small, I couldn't believe there was actually a whole book inside. Upon opening it, I soon realized why -- this book is a UK Harlequin romance title. I've never read any US harlequin books, let alone UK ones, so I don't really have a point of comparison, but I'm fairly sure Harlequins are not known for their length or depth. What I do know is that this book is a short, quick read filled with secrecy, intrigue, and romance. It's not a book I would re-read, but I enjoyed both the story and the characters. It was perfect as a summer beach read!

it was very different from the usual HP. however, i found it boring due to the lack of angst. der was angst only near the very end when grace revealed the truth. it was too late by then to make the book interesting! perhaps loukas shud have been the hero. after all, let's compare wid The Veranchetti Marriage and it's easily believable dat loukas cud have been the hero! in this case, the heroine was indeed guilty and dat's really a 1st in HP land! this book had huge potential but it failed lamentably for lack of creating intense, very emotional situations, full of angst!

This book was about a man and a woman who meet and they both have their own secrets and problems. They never imagined falling for each other, so it was entertaining watching them take risks and opening up more and more. Also a fabolous ending, very glad that it was a happy ending. But I also enjoyed that the heroine wasn't perfect she had her issues and so did he. Lifes not perfect and neither are people and theauthor did a good job portraying that.

I got this book through a giveaway, so I never would have picked it out and read it. I was very glad I did rewrite. A great storyline with a lot of stuff along the way to keep you entertained.

I would definitely recommend it.
