Learn about the bugs in your basement and backyard. Author John Acorn has selected what he believes are 125 of the most common or fascinating bugs you'll find in Alberta. Outstanding colour illustrations by naturalist and artist Ian Sheldon bring the beauty and mystery of these creatures into focus.
Another good guide by the "Nature Nut". I liked that he included little stories and thoughts and not just bald facts. He also included the time of year and habitat to look for the insects. I also really like that he uses everyday words instead of the technical ones,it feels more friendly, like he talks about patterns being on a spider's 'tummy'. Illustrations are very nice. A great little guide.
I guess photos might be better for some species that have metallic shines and such. A lot of the insects are rather well known but it's certainly helpful. I wish a few more weird ones were included, I've seen some beetles that aren't in here and I still don't know what they are.
How else would I have known the real name of a tarsand beetle? Love this book. It doesn't romanticize bugs -- lets me be scared of them if that's what I really feel.
