S.L. Armstrong has been writing for as long as she can remember. Art and reading have played a large part in her life since young childhood, but around fourteen, writing became her passion. Voraciously consuming every book in front of her opened up hundreds of worlds in her head, and she soon wanted to create worlds for other people as well. She has a particular fondness for gothic horror, horror, high fantasy, urban fantasy, and romance novels. The authors she turns to time and again are Stephen King, L.J. Smith, V.C. Andrews, R.L. Stine, and Anne Rice, among others. She has no shame in picking up the young adult novels she loved as a child, and she will talk your ear off about grammar and punctuation.

After she married her husband over seventeen years ago, she began to truly delve into the world of writing for public consumption. It was sheer chance that she stumbled on M/M fanfiction, and she's not looked back. Though fanfiction will always have a fond place in her heart, she soon grew tired of playing in other people's sandboxes. When she discovered M/M romance, and how it was now a legitimate branch of romance writing, she knew her course. S.L. plans to release F/F, M/M, M/F, and multiple partner books as she continues her writing career. M/M romance is where her heart lies, no matter what else she may write or read, and it's where she keeps returning to. There is something about two men passionately in love that just makes her heart melt, and she has no intention of giving that up anytime soon.

S.L. Armstrong lives in Florida with her husband, partner, two dogs, and twelve cats. She hates the heat and longs for a northern, snowy climate. She writes with K. Piet on a number of projects, but she also writes her own solitary titles as well.

This story was written based on the following picture, that I provided. Squueeee!!!! :)

Photobucket

This was a beautiful story about a guardian angel, Raziel, who not only loved his charge, Cole, but fell in love with him, a big no-no for an angel. After being successful in everything Cole set out to do - life, love, and career - all came crashing down around him after the love of his life found another man and left him. Cole, having always been so happy, didn't know how to process this loss and turned to hard-core vices in order to cope.

At a time where Cole was at his weakest, Raziel did something he should not have done...he saved him. It is his duty to watch over him, and to try to guide him through whispers in his mind of the right thing to do, but never was he supposed to step in the way he did. However, Raziel wasn't ready to see Cole lose out on life, and he did what he needed to do in order to bring him back. As a result, Raziel finally appeared to Cole, and an instant bond formed between them.

This story was written beautifully, and I loved the premise of it (of course...hehe). Their love scenes were absolutely beautiful, and I loved these two characters immensely. The love that Raziel felt for Cole was so clearly evident, as was the hurt that Cole embraced with his loss. My only wish for this story was that I wish there had been more time for Cole to have to himself, and to realize that he didn't actually need anyone with him in order to survive, just his inner strength. But there did come a time when Raziel was gone, being punished for his actions, and he fell back to his old ways of drinking again. Fortunately, Raziel came back at the right time and saved him again.

Just like the previous LiaW story that I read right before this one, I feel the relationship is a bit unbalanced. Raziel (the angel) is COMPLETELY devoted to Cole. Raziel loves his ward, with everything that he has. While Cole stumbles into Raziel after his lover of 10 years dumped him and Cole is so broken hearted that he is ready to kill himself. This has a sense of "rebound" guy all over it. I wonder what will happen when they have their first fight as a couple ...

I think I like the other story Armstrong & Piet submitted to the event, Jungle Law, a lot better

This was definitely a very sweet story. There were some things I definitely enjoyed:

--how Raziel had been in love with Cole for years, and had been taking care of him and watching out for him so selflessly was very sweet

--I loved how angel-like the authors were able to make Raziel, that his wings moved (unconsciously) as his emotions shifted, and the adorable chirping and other bird-like sounds he makes all the time. That was very well done and definitely made him seem more than human. He's one of the better-crafted angels I've read in M/M.

There were some elements that didn't work as well for me, though:

--The only place I've seen the name Raziel is in the City of Bones series, so, especially at the beginning, when I'd see that name I kept instinctively picturing the 60-foot-tall, glowing, easily-angered angel from that series.

--The insta-love here from Cole just didn't connect for me. Yes, Raziel kept saying that Cole had been hearing his voice in his head his whole life, but Cole himself says that he spent most of his life NOT listening to that voice. I was confused how he'd go from that to love in just a few hours.

--The biggest thing that concerns me after finishing this one is how easily-conquered all of Cole's addictions are.

The beautifully devoted and selfless angel, who was fabulously characterized and described and the fact that I cared enough about Cole to be concerned for him get this story two stars. Bonus star for being free.

Sweet if a little over sappy story. It was a slightly more complicated take on Angel falls in love with human trope. I appreciated that it took time for Cole to move on, that it wasn't overnight instalove exactly. It was nicely written, a little longer than it needed to be but not too short at least. The angel saw both good and bad in Cole and we saw the ugliness as well as the beauty. I liked when Cole said, That was more real than these things usually are.

I still hate the use of "his sex" for "penis" but it's grammatically correct so I'll move on.

3.5 stars rounded up because of the realism.

Free LiaW short.
I had a few issues with this one, the formost being what on earth will happen to Cole if Raziel isn't around anymore?
Cole seems like a very dependent personality, either on Daniel, drugs, alcohol and now Raziel.
He was literally saved from death, and as soon as he has to survive on his own, he doesn't seek help, he starts drinking again? If he doesn't love himself, how can he really love someone else?
What if Raziel is hit by a bus, was all he gave up to love Cole for nought?
I guess I just didn't see anything in Cole to make him worthy of Raziels love and sacrifice.

Beautiful story about a broken man who is slowly self-destructing after breaking up with his long-term boyfriend. His guardian angel watches helplessly and must make the decision to allow his charge to succumb to darkness or break the rules and save the man he loves so dearly.

I absolutely loved this story. It was emotion-filled and didn't feel rushed or cliche.

This was a really sweet story about a guardian angel falling in love with his charge. The descriptions of Raziel(the angel)and Cole making love were beautiful. I have not read an mm angel story before so was very interested to see how this plot would be handled and was not disappointed. 3.5 stars.

Insta-love, yaoi style roles, and a plot that moves just a bit too quickly. Not one of my personal favorites. Not terrible, but not really engaging either.

BotM ~

Raziel - adored him! He was so sweet, so full of goodness and wonderment - irresistible! I also enjoyed the depiction of angels doing angel stuff. Raziel tossing all that angel stuff through the proverbial window? Enjoyed that even more. :)

Loved the guardian angel concept, especially the powers they wield. The way they assist those who have died is very unique, very cool.

Plus - nice surprise - I could actually'get' the love he felt for Cole. That doesn't happen very often in short stories, probably due to time constraints. I'm sure it helped that Raz had been observing Cole his entire life. :)

Favorite line: When Raziel says he knows every single thing about Cole and STILL loves him.
Oh, gawd - swoon!

Yeah, Raz was great and single-handedly carried the story for me, which is a good thing because...

Cole hit one of my biggest pet-peeve-buttons.

Getting dumped sucks. I get that. But attaching your only reason to live onto someone else? Nails-on--chalkboard.
Not saying that isn't a perfectly legitimate response, but it felt extreme in this case.

Enjoyable, short read.

**First read 4 Stars
What an beautifully sweet story, about as sweet as Raziel is. He is such an innocent in a lot of ways but I loved his character. Cole broke my heart, it was hard reading about his downward spiral, drinking to much smoking too much and eventually abusing drugs and almost dying. Enter Raziel his angel to save him. You know there will be trouble to come from that. I thought the two of these guys worked well together but when you read this like all paranormal books your beliefs have to be left at the door and just go with the story. This isn't real life or anything close to it it's entertainment and entertain me it did!

** Second time around 2.5 to 3 Stars
Funny how reading a story years later gives a different feeling. While I thought Raziel was still super sweet I thought Cole was an A**. Did he break my heart this time... no! He infuriated me. LOL Also, I wish there was more story and less sex. A love story doesn't need to be filled with sex for it to be a love story.

I really enjoyed this story about a guardian angel who falls in love with the man he's guarding and breaks every rule to save his life. There's a lot of emotion and promises of love and devotion on his part and when his charge can finally see him, things change.

Everyone knows I'm a angst h00r and this filled me up today and made me hurt, which I needed and then soothed it back over with the beautiful ending.

The story is fairly similar to the movie City of Angels

It's sweet, it's not heavy on religious overtones (moreso the movie than this story), and it's quick to read. My only complaint was the last scene felt too long/unnecessary. Much of it could have been wrapped up with a fade to black. Minor complaint.

I want my guardian angel to show himself. I need him to be beautiful, glowing, and have a smile that lights up the world. Also, wings that flutter and cover me. Lol

I really liked this story, even though it was short, I didn't feel anything missing.

Awww! How tough it must be to fall in love with your charge when you are guardian angel. And then to watch them spiral into disaster.
I liked these characters. Although they just "met", it does not surprise me that Cole is able to find the connection to Raziel immediately. Loved the ending.

This review can be found at Brief Encounters Reviews.

This was one of the free stories that was inspired by a photo at the Goodreads Love is Always Write event.

This follows the fairly familiar trope of a guardian angel falling in love with his charge and breaking the rules, however as a rule, their humans aren’t quite such a train wreck as Cole. Since his lover of ten years left him, Cole has descended into a bottle of booze more often than not, and when that doesn’t seem to be working, he’s moved on to cocaine. Despite Raziel’s attempts to get Cole back on the straight and narrow, nothing is working and when Cole overdoses, Raziel does the unspeakable and saves him from death. Ooops. Somehow this also triggers Cole being able to see him.

Within a short time, Raziel finally gets his wish, as Cole and he are rolling in the sheets, wings and all. But of course, no good deed goes unpunished as they say, and Raziel is called back to heaven, leaving Cole to wonder if maybe he is unlovable and that everyone abandons him. Of course there is a happy resolutions to the separation, this is a classic romance. It is quite a sweet story and I think many of us have been there, where you just can’t let go of that relationship even though it is dead. I got the impression that Cole was kind of hanging onto his relationship with Daniel because he thought he should, rather than because he truly still loved him. It was easier to just keep clinging, if not very attractive.

Raziel’s frustration with being unable to help the man he’d fallen in love with was well done, along with his sheer joy in finally having his most secret fantasies come true in getting Cole to himself. I did find Cole a bit self-centered. They talked about the fact that Raziel broke about a dozen rules/laws by helping him and being with him, and when he wakes up alone, rather than be concerned that Raziel has gotten into trouble, he sits around bemoaning his own loss and turning to alcohol yet again to deal with his life.

Still, on the whole, if you enjoy the angel/human trope, it’s got an eminently likable angel who makes the cutest little sounds, and it does indeed fit the picture very well. So a sweet romantic read with a bit of a dark edge until Raziel drags Cole out of the pits of despair.

Overall
A well done, if somewhat typical, tale of a guardian angel falling in love with his charge. This was obviously working within the constraints of a short story, and to some extent Cole's feelings toward Raziel felt a little forced, but this could be because we see so little of them together, but Raziel’s reasoning for why Cole feels the way he does makes sense as well. Still, I would have liked to have seen more of Cole's struggles and surprise at his feelings toward Raziel.

Most of my issues with this story are personal peeves, and I think in general many readers will enjoy it. Cole seems to have so much going for him in life, but losing the one thing that meant the most to him is something he can’t seem to bounce back from. His struggle to accept Raziel and begin to open up and trust, and love, another being is a wonderful exploration of the heart.

The other pet peeve (I seem to have so many!) I had with the story, is that they immediately have anal sex. This pure being who has seen a lot, sure, has his first sexual experience as anal sex. From kissing to anal. It seems unlikely, and rubs me the wrong way a bit. Not that Cole isn't wonderfully tender and not that Raziel doesn't want it (oh, he does!), but still. In addition, while I understand that the angels are male because it's M/M romance (and many are traditionally portrayed as such), I have to wonder at the inclusion of an anus. They don't eat, why would they need one? They don't need to digest, so why? Obviously it's there for the same reason the penis is.

Despite the above, I did enjoy the story and it's definitely worth picking up!

Offered for FREE from the M/M Romance Group, Love Is Always Write: Volume One.

3.5 stars Well, the nakedness in the story was opposite to that of the picture, but I suppose I can forgive the creative license. :) This was a sweet story, and of course I loved Raziel. The only thing that annoyed me in the middle was Cole's selfishness and obliviousness . I like that they didn't totally erase his feelings for Daniel all of a sudden, and acknowledged that healing would still take time. And I like that it wasn't too insta-lovey .

While I'm not typically a fan of paranormal circumstances or mystical creatures mixing with my erotica, I must admit, I enjoyed this story immensely.

It's interesting to note that for a book in the fantasy genre, the content effectively portrayed very realistic examples of the human condition...highly charged emotional responses, inner conflicts, vulnerabily, the fear of rejection, loneliness, seeking escape from pain through sunstance abuse, the resilience of the human spirit, the renewal of hope after loss, the rush of lust and fiery passion and, finally, the wonderfully terrifying experience of letting go & allowing one's self to fall deeply in love...

Oh, yeah...there's also the smoking hot angel-sex! Which sounds delicious, by the way...

It was a okay read, but the relationship felt a bit unbalanced. I just kind of wish Cole seemed more devoted to the idea of being with the other main love interest, Raziel, and less overly invested in Daniel, his ex, who had already moved on. He was still thinking about his ex while he had sex with Raziel and was still pining over him up to and including the last page; Cole is clearly still obsessed with his ex and I really doubt that his 'I love you' was totally genuine. However, by the end of the story I do think he is actively trying to find happiness with Raziel and move on - even if he's struggling with it. Which is romantic in it's own right.

The theology’s skewed in its look at the nature of angels and the relationships and differences between humans and angels—but then this isn’t a work of theology, it’s a work of erotica. And for that it works pretty well. One thing though was distracting (and approached humorous, although that certainly wasn’t the intention): the great frequency with which “sex” was used as a euphemism for “penis”. It wasn’t as if Armstrong and Piet didn’t know the word “cock” or were too delicate to use it, so I don’t know what caused this reticence.

At first I was a bit taken back by the use of a known angel (Raziel) in a gay erotica, but after I was finished I teared up at how beautiful it was. It wasn't a typical erotica short story. It wasn't dirty, fast, hard, and raunchy. It was heart-felt, intense, passionate, loving, and powerful. The sacrifices that Raziel was willing, and ultimately did make showed the extent of his feelings. This was a beautiful love story!

An Angel's Soul is part of the LiAW event.
What an amazing story.
Daniel, a broken young man who is slowly drinking himself to death.
Raziel, his guardian angel watches as the object of his affection breaks a little more with each drink.
A story about second chances, being rescue and learn to love again.

Mmm, a beautiful guardian angel who has a heart of gold and falls in love with his charge – just yummy! I think I love this particular storyline so much because it represents the strength of love – a love so strong that it would cause someone to willingly choose another over eternal life. There’s nothing more romantic than that! Beautifully done – loved it!! :)

A solid story. Not terribly original or world-shattering, but sweet in its own way. Probably more of a 2.5, though, because I rather disliked all the characters except Raziel. Cole was kind of a jack-ass in his way. Daniel was written as kind of a jack-ass in the beginning even though he's not really, but the impression stuck. *shrugs. The writing itself is rather good, though, so 2.5 rounded up.
