"Falling in love usually happens when you least expect it. But love isn't the only thing that happens without warning." Lexi saw him for the first time in the fourth-floor pediatric cancer clinic. He was tall, handsome, and had a full head of dark hair-nothing like the little kids she was used to meeting during her routine hospital visits. No, Ricky was wholly unexpected. He stared at her, mesmerized by her stunning blue eyes. She looked at him carefully, wondering what his motivation for hanging out in a cancer clinic could be. He smiled confidently, unbothered by her bald scalp. Lexi softly returned the smile. Neither of them aware how this moment would entwine them forever. In a beautiful and heartwarming true story, author Emily Gould weaves the narrative of her daughter's incredible life. The story of Lexi and Ricky begins with a chance meeting but grows into a perfect tale of real teenage romance, the good and the ugly of cancer treatments, and the inspiring power of love overcoming all odds.
I did not know Alexis personally but have been following her story for close to two years. I originally came into contact with her postings when she posted her infamous tik tok dance video after finally being able to leave the hospital! I feel very appreciative and respectful of the Gould family for sharing her story. It was both inspiring and absolutely devastating at the same time. I am not a religious person any longer but I enjoyed the depth at which spirituality was discussed in this book. It’s crazy to me that this happened 20 mins away from my hometown. Wishing so much love to the Gould and Stafford families, thank you for sharing the deepest parts of you so others can learn and listen. Thanks for sharing some of the most personal aspects of this story so that we can understand the depth of love in this story.
I grew up where Lexi and her family lived. I also lost a daughter to cancer. Emily,s words truly express what a family goes through. The emotional roller coaster is so well described, made me feel if I was reliving my own "cancer family" experience. Was able to watch one of Lexi's drill team performances, she was as amazing as portrayed. Thank you Emily for sharing this journey. May God bless you and yours until you are together again.
A tragic look into the horrific mess that is cancer. Kudos to the author for being able and willing to share this beautiful story of love and loss. We could all learn a lot from Lex and her whole family on how to endure to the end with faith!
