⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ || A Fascinating Snapshot of an Ancient Civilization
This illustrated factual book delivers exactly what the title promises — a rapid-fire collection of captivating tidbits that bring the mysterious world of ancient Egypt to life. From pharaohs and pyramids to daily life, religion and mummification, this book offers a surprisingly wide range of facts that are both educational and entertaining.
The format is ideal for casual readers, history buffs, or anyone who wants to dip into Egyptian history without committing to a dense School preparatory textbook. The facts are digestible and varied, making it a perfect read to pick up and put down at your leisure. It's great for trivia lovers or as a supplementary resource for students.
The only reason I’m docking half a star is that some readers might wish for a bit more depth or context behind the facts. Occasionally, a fascinating detail begs for a little more explanation or follow-up, but the book sticks to its quick-hit format, like 500 fast forward news on TV news channels.
Overall, this is a fun, accessible and surprisingly thorough exploration of one of the history’s most intriguing civilizations. A great starting point for anyone curious about the land of the pharaohs and pyramids.
The book goes into Egypt, both the pre-pyramid time and the later time involving the construction of the pyramids. It goes into how irrigation was developed and the effect it had and also notes an Egyptian game named Senet which is probably the first board game made.
(It's also a game you can find on Steam. It's a challenging game where you try to move your pieces along the board before the other person can.)
It then goes into the unification of Egypt, the development of the Old Kingdom, the various dynasties, slavery and trade. It also notes they used a 24-hour day and had the world's oldest known sundial.
It also covers the time of Persian rule and Alexander the Great. Other topics covered include the various Gods and Goddesses, pyramids, geography, trade, architecture, literature and poetry, clothing, social structure and agriculture.
It gives a very good overall view of the history of Egypt and it reads well.
The facts contained in this volume are arranged both according to timeline and topic. Of course most everyone has heard of the pyramids and mummies, but the book delved into lesser known history as well. I never knew how long ancient Egypt was ruled over by people other than Egyptians! It makes it all the more remarkable that the culture survived as long as it did.
It's not a long read by any means and provides enough info that if any particular topic interested the reader, they could delve into it further with a good basis already in place.
I'd read similar books by the author as it was well put together, with plenty of illustrations as well.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The title of this book is a little bit misleading. The facts are actually concise true stories about different periods in Egyptian history, with different sentences numbered as facts. But it is a good survey of Egyptian history and is fun to read. This would be appropriate for ages 13-17.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book. I found the facts interesting and well laid out - in order and succinct. My only issues were with a few of the pronunciations in the text, but I can't be positive that my pronunciation isn't the incorrect one. The information presented is comprehensive and informative.
Definitely a YA book, which I didn't know when I got it. Includes good facts (some repetition of facts gets annoying) in short paragraphs. Kind of a "dry" read, more for skimming and picking up the tidbits that are personally interesting.
Excellent reference about Ancient Egypt and the things they used in past like Honey and bees for food and medicine. The use of the plumb line for building tall structures. I would definitely recommend this book for others to use!
The book tries to introduce the history of ancient Egypt in an interesting way. What I liked was that it summarizes certain periods of history in 30 points, and that we can learn a lot this way.
What is a shortcoming, however, is that each point is often just a single sentence, that way the book fails to be interesting and becomes dry.
I know that this would make the book thicker, but I feel that it would be impossible to put down if he wrote about each point in at least a few lines, explaining it and telling stories from history.
I like this book. It's the second book of facts I absorbed this month.
The book is divided into periods, and then into cultural subjects (like Art). Prior to this, my knowledge of Egyptian history came from the Bible and from the museums I visited throughout my lifetime. I didn't see anything that was iffy and the data/facts flowed quite smoothly.
The book would have been better if the photos/artwork was captioned.
