Graffiti Women: Street Art from Five Continents

Rate this book
From the author of the enormously successful Graffiti World comes this spectacular follow-up, celebrating the contributions of women to contemporary graffiti and street art.

Female writers have always been in the vanguard of the graffiti movement, though often shunted to the sidelines by their male counterparts. This exhaustive volume places them front and center, featuring 1,000 full-color illustrations from some of the world’s most prominent artists, including Brazil’s Nina, Japan’s Sasu, Mexico’s Peste, and the Americans Lady Pink, Swoon, and Miss 17. Two eight-page fold-out collages, a fold-out poster jacket, and an authoritative text round out the impressive package. The first and only comprehensive survey of its kind, this book is sure to attract and expand upon the wide and enthusiastic readership that made Graffiti World such a runaway success.

I love this book. It's great for any artist or anyone who has an appreciation for different medias of art. I love the focus on women and how street art for us has changed over the years.

It's really inspiring to see just how many women produce street art despite it being a predominantly male world. Amazing ideas and styles beautifully reproduced in one book; this will stay off the bookshelf for a while...

Talk about pure awesomeness! I really love the way this book was put together: 1-2 pages per artist or group with only a small blurb below detailing who they are, where they work and why they do it. There were also several foldouts with massive collages of work (in the book's index they have the maps of these that show which artistic design belonged to who), contact info for some of the artists (yes, graffiti can be illegal so not everyone is listed), and a nice introduction. The most fantastic part, obviously, was the work itself! Every last one of the women mentioned in this book has a unique style from the overly cutesy to the overly butch and everywhere in between. Some work purely in black and white paint, others paint the rainbow with each tag. Some don't even use spray paint at all! A few of the artists in this book are there due to clever stickers, decals, etc. they 'tag' in there home cities on anything and everything.

Overall a totally fantastic book that should be a hit for anyone who enjoys a wide variety of art styles.

I find street art fascinating. The book writes about and shows some of the art of female street artists from all over the world. A lot of the art was very impressive. The author was very thorough and made sure to portray the artists ideas and reasons for doing their work. I found the stories of the artists interesting even though I couldn't really relate.

However I thought it could have been organized better. The stories of the artists didn't say where the artist was living or where she grew up. I had to constantly flip back to the index at the front of the book to see where this person lived and where she was from. I found that annoying. If you are interested in learning about why artist do graffiti and street art it is worth a read.

Looking through this book, it's sometime difficult to remember that these are entirely female artists. Never underestimate a woman with a spray can.

A great representation of women in graffiti and street art. A better composition could've helped me read this quicker, but I enjoyed seeing all of the artwork this book had to offer. Needed reminder that women exist and have existed in all fields everywhere.

Some very interesting street art, though I did find the book Subway Art more compelling overall, likely because it's more about the history of graffiti, which is more up my alley.

while its better than "graffiti world" it still suffers from the author trying to cram too much into one book. I like it though, enough to give it four stars. its interesting to read how many of the artists includes in the selection don't agree with separating men and women in the graffiti culture. they prefer to think of everyone simply as "writers". yet here the author is creating an entire book facilitating that separation in gender, the very thing these writers dislike.

I've got this album as a present and absolutely loved it. A great compilation of photos of feminine graffiti art from around the world. Focused entirely on female artists. Big, chunky book, nice thick paper makes it easy to browse through the book lots of times without damaging it. Fantastic and very, very inspiring !

I think I like seeing graffiti more in its natural environment....it was a little boring just looking at page after page of it. Don't get me wrong, they are fabulous artists....I would just rather see it walking down the street (or painted in my studio!).

I got this book from the library because it had a section on Swoon. I was more into the street art section of the book, but it was a good introduction to something I know very little about.
