He killed your best friend years ago. Now he’s back. From the outside looking in, Winona has it all. A great job, a near-perfect fiance, a home she loves. But in the winter of 2022, one event threatens to topple this delicate house of cards. Years ago, her best friend Rosie was murdered in cold blood. Strangled, assaulted, and dumped in the river that runs through the city. Not only that, but she was the last in a series of violent crimes believed to be the work of a serial killer. Winona has done everything right to move on with her life even though Rosie’s murder haunts her. She was with her that night and they got into a fight. Rosie left the bar they were at and Winona never saw her alive again. After Rosie’s death, the murders stopped. Now, toying with the idea of trying for a baby, Winona sits across from her soon-to-be husband Mason in a diner on a Saturday morning. By chance, she catches the tail end of a news broadcast. A murder in Oklahoma City. And the details sound all too familiar. A missing girl, Rosie’s age, found assaulted and strangled on the riverbank. Winona’s therapist tells her it’s a coincidence. Mason tells her these things happen. It doesn’t have to be connected to Rosie. As the holidays approach, and another girl is found in the same manner, the cops have absolutely no leads. An old friend shows up who also knew Rosie and Winona decides she needs to take matters into her own hands. But those closest to her don’t understand that she can’t simply let this go.
She needs to find the guy. For Rosie

After reading Swingers, I read this book based only on the author’s name. The protagonist is deeply disturbed by her friend’s death at the hands of a serial killer 5 years before. She also stresses over the sanity of her brother who lives in the guest house on her and her husband’s property. The overall plot is a good premise. And there are ample characters to build upon. My issue is that there were no tense moments or action. I felt, instead, like I was reading a diary. It’s hard to explain my reaction, and others may feel completely absorbed so don’t take just my words. Read other reviews and check out her other book, Swingers!

*3.5 STARS!!

Before writing my review, I want to thank BookSirens and Marnie Vinge for gifting me the ARC of FOR ROSIE. It was such a privilege to read this before publication. And I appreciate you trusting me with an honest review!

For the most part, I enjoyed FOR ROSIE, even though it was written less as a thriller and more as a narrative directly from the POV of our main character, who is working her way through the grief and trauma of losing her best friend at the hands of a murderer. The premise of the novel drew me in immediately with the promise of a sinister mystery surrounding a serial killer and murders committed years apart. I did like the writing style of the author and it made for a very quick read. Our protagonist, Winona, is a complicated character who is developed well by our author. The grief and sorrow she is experiencing is heartbreaking and you can't help but feel for her. Anyone who has experienced a great loss knows this kind of pain. Her relationships with husband, Mason, and brother, Charlie, are touched upon and intrugued me very much. However, I felt as if those relationships could have been delved into more fully with more of a backstory, giving the reader a bit more insight into the dynamics between Winona, Mason, and Charlie. Charlie's character, especially, was difficult to understand without more of a glimpse into his past.

The book definitely kept me reading because I needed to know what would happen and who would be unmasked as the killer. It has quite the twist at the end and the reader is indeed given closure. Admittedly, the end was a bit rushed in my opinion-- I would have liked a bit more buildup to the big reveal. Nevertheless, I came away so glad with my decision to read this book by Marnie Vinge and hope to read more by her in the future. And I was so happy to see that Winona keeps her promise to her best friend.

And lastly, I just have to say how much I loved the dedication by the author--very heartfelt and comforting for this reader.

"I want to heal. I want to thrive. And not just for Rosie. This time, it's for me."

This one was so good. It had everything a good thriller needs, and it had me second guessing everything that I was reading. I had convinced myself that every guy in the book was the killer, or at least up to something. I flew through this book so quick because I just needed to know how it ends, but found myself gutted when it did end.
Another brilliant read from Marnie. Each one I read just seems to get better and better, and I can't wait to see what's next.
Thank you so much to Marnie for sending me an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the story and how it ended. But, it didn't thrill me until the end of the book.
Many parts of the book felt useless and slowed the pace of the story.
2 stars might look like a harsh rating but it's my honest review. I just wanted to be done with this book and read another.
Well, at least I liked it enough to finish it. And once again, the story is good, it's just how it's written that didn't get to me like I hoped it would.

(Received ARC)

This was a short mystery novel about a woman who lost her best friend to a serial killer. The serial killer then returns and the story unravels.

I personally think this book fell short. Despite the fact this book was ~300 pages on iBooks, it dragged. By chapter nine, the only plot progression was running errands, going to work and therapy. I mean there were paragraphs to describe her going from work to yoga with no real substance. It could have used a red pen and some focus.

Additionally there was something about the inner monologue that felt cheesy. Realistically, the constant mental spirals were valid because of everything the main character went through yet I was so sick of reading the same thing over and over again.

Finally, the element of mystery. When you only have a cast of 4 main characters and a handful of side characters it’s not hard to guess who the villain might be. There was no real thrill and then the actual action scene lasted about a page and a half. It was extremely anticlimactic.

All in all, I give this book 2 stars as the concept was there and I could envision it as a draft for a screenplay. It just so happen that 90% of it was the the protagonist describing her every move or spiraling out with anxiety.

I absolutely loved this book, I didn't want it to end and I'm sad it did, I was hoping for a several books long serial killer chase, but even though everything was concluded in this one book, it was a fantastic read.

I could relate a lot to the MC, Winona, although my best friend wasn't murdered, she had played my emotions and feeling for her and I can really relate to that tone in this story. I genuinely hadn't figured it out and was pleasantly surprised by the reveal, I didn't see it coming.

One of the best books I've read this month, and will be recommending it to friends and family. 5/5 It kept me engaged, guessing and searching for clues, I will read this one again in the future.

I am a huge fan of thrillers, and while I would absolutely classify this book as a thriller, I was a bit annoyed by it for much of the book.

I 100% understand that Winona was going through a very traumatic experience. All of that work she put in with therapy, just to have everything taken back when similar murders begin to occur again. However, there wasn't much of anything interesting in the first 95% of the book. All the fun and action occurs in the last 5%. There weren't any twists and turns. I did enjoy the fact that the author did give us a few options on who could be involved in the murder of Rosie. I definitely did not guess that actual person involved; I was convinced it was someone else entirely.

But, Winona's character annoyed me much of the time. Despite having gone through a traumatic experience, I wish that her demeanor was a bit more warrior-like instead of acting like she herself was the victim when it was really Rosie that was the victim.

🥀 "Anytime something traumatic happens to us, our brain imprints it deep within itself. It records things like temperature, barometric pressure, season, time of day. On and on. All of those data points are meant to protect you from ever facing that trauma again."

I just finished this and I am just feeling so many things right now! For Rosie is fantastic and was beautifully written.

I appreciated the description in the novel. I felt like I was there and could see what Winona was seeing, hearing what she did, and feeling what she felt.

I loved the mystery in not knowing who the killer was, even though I thought I knew, but then I was wrong a couple times! I enjoyed the suspense, the late nights reading on my Kindle, and the book tied together perfectly! Another page-turning thriller for Marnie Vinge!

For Rosie was honestly a tough book for me to connect with. The story focuses on Winona, who lost her best friend Rosie at the hands of a serial killer - only for that killer to resurface years later and pick up where they left off. The concept on paper sounds great. However, this book focused more on Winona's pure obsession with Rosie than anything else. Winona's relationships with her husband Mason and brother Chris seem to be used more as fillers than actual key pieces to the plot.m; when in theory, these characters and their story arcs could have had such a more substantial impact on the overall story. I will say, finding out who the killer was did throw me for a loop; it was not something I expected. Overall, the book was lackluster for me, although someone else may love it.

I really enjoyed For Rosie by Marnie Vinge. This is the second book that I have read by this author. I did have a little bit of trouble getting into the story at the beginning but after persevering, I became engrossed in it. The book deserves a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend this book to others. It lost half a star due to the difficulties I had becoming engaged at the start of the book. Thoroughly enjoyed the read.

I was really excited about the premise of this book, but it ended up feeling more like a journal from the MC's POV instead. The trauma from losing a BFF, crippling anxiety and spiraling into old habits are definitely valid and relatable, but it just never seemed to evolve or progress. There wasn't much action or suspense until 90% of the way through, which made the ending seem rushed. I definitely liked the twisted ending!!

First, I would like to thank BookSirens for giving me the opportunity to review For Rosie, by Marnie Vinge. The book is not at the top of my favorite list for 2023, but the plot had an unexpected final twist.

Winona lost her friend Rosie in a brutal murder. Her body was found in the Oklahoma River, and still after a few years the case has not been solved. Then suddenly more bodies began appearing in the same river. All with the same signature trademarks from Rosie's murder. Winona is convinced that they are all committed by the same killer, and she is determined to find out. Even against the pleas of her husband and psychiatrist to leave the past alone. Winona will not stop until she gets to the bottom of the dark truth. She began poking around on the internet for more information and receives a message from someone claiming that they know who killed Rosie. Now Winona needs to make the decision whether she is going to put her life in jeopardy and meet up with this person. Or leave it alone because she may be walking into a trap.

Manie Vinge blew my mind with the ending of this story. Some chapters of the book were honestly a slow burn, but it was intense enough to still keep me reading. I was just as curious and committed as the character to find out what happened to Rosie.

Winona is mourning the death of her best friend. Getting therapy, which is not helping. She has the perfect job, the perfect partner, a beautiful home, but cannot get past Rosie's death, she feels almost responsible as she was with Rosie that night, and they fought.
Rosie was the last in a series of murders, and now the murders have started again. Winona is convinced it is the same killer. Her therapist and her partner tell her the murders are not connected to Rosie... but she knows in her gut that the killer has returned.

Oh wow, twists and turns and red herrings abound in this book!
I thought I had guessed the killer's identity, and then changed my mind a little later, and even my second guess wasn't correct!
There was so much suspense and some parts made my heart pound with anticipation.
I really could not put this book down, and read it almost in one sitting.

Thank you to the author for sending the book and allowing me to read it. I do appreciate free books!

This one was a tough read for me, it seemed to drag for about 80% of the book. The last 20% was faster paced and much better. The story is about Winona who is struggling with being a survivor of a best friend/lover Rosie murder. I great majority of the book is about her struggles with that guilt and her battle with a brother, Charlie, who was also battling with mental health issues. I’m not sure the Charlie issues were of any value to the whole story and could have been minimized. Dr Ewing was somewhat a side character for a great portion of the book which kind of made him suspect. Jack was a FBI contact who was involved with Rosie, but a fringe play for most of the book. I understand how difficult those with mental health issues battle it not just here and there but 100% of the time day in and day out, but it seemed to drag the story along slowly and somewhat repeatedly over the course of the book. Just a difficult read for me.

Winona seems to have a wonderful life. She's got a great, supportive husband, and a job with a supportive boss. But, she has suffered trauma and hasn't really gotten over it.

Years ago, her best friend was murdered. The murderer was never found and Winona struggles with this. Now, there are new murders, done in the same way as her friend, which brings up the old trauma. On top of that, her brother is living with her, and he has his own mental health issues.

Winona struggles to move forward. She is convinced the murders are all related and takes risks to find out the truth.

This was an easy read. It was almost like reading her journals, as you got a insight into her thoughts and her confusion. And the whole time I read, I was sure I knew who did it. And I was wrong!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a great thriller. Although you have a feeling that one of the main characters is going to turn out to be the serial killer that killed Winona's best friend years before, the way the author plays out the story leaves you guessing until the end. The author does a great job of developing the characters, and you really feel the pain that Winona experiences throughout the book. My one critique is that it wasn't as action packed and suspenseful as a typical thriller until the last chapter or two. But definitely enjoyed it and recommend if you are a fan of the genre.

A good storyline, this is told in the main characters POV Winona.
Winona is struggling to come to terms with the brutal strangulation of her best friend Rosie.
She is seeing a psychiatrist to help her move on, but at the moment she just can’t, she can’t let go of Rosie even though it’s years later. She has terrible anxiety.
With that said, Winona did really annoy me, with repeating everything around and around in her head, although that is what her trauma and anxiety do.
I liked this book, but didn’t love it
But we do get to find out the real reason behind her trauma, something she has not let her self really think about. I wonder what that is?

This book was ok, I feel that the premise was super exciting, but the only plot was in the last 15% of the book. I had an inkling of who had done it fairly early, although there were multiple to choose from. I do think the writing was good, but that this is not necessarily a thriller but more a representation of the manifestation of grief and trauma. I want to read other books of this author, as the writing was, as I say, enjoyable and it was a fun, quick read.

Overall this was a quick read for me. I appreciated that the villain was not immediately obvious and that the author kept you guessing with multiple options. While I did enjoy the book I felt there were was a bit of overuse of the Rosie character without a lot of backstory or background on her or the relationship. The twist of the Rosie/Winona love story felt forced and unnatural almost like the author was turning this into an LGBTQIA book as an afterthought. I wish the story had expanded more on the relationship between Chris and Winona and his reasons for living with the couple.

2.5 stars...

I was a little disapointed by this one...
The plot sounded like something I would really enjoy, but unfortunately, it felt a little flat.
Almost 90% of the story was about the main character's feelings, which is ok, but I missed more action.
I also felt that the main character's brother's story led to nowhere. I would have liked to see him more involved, otherwise it feels like his story is just here to fill some blanks.
The end was also too predictable for me and too rushed.

Winona is a woman obsessed with her friend's death. This brings on all kinds of issues for her and her partner Mason. Also she has her little brother living in their guest house and he has his own problems. The first 10 chapters for me, seemed to be repeating what was already said. The book was okay. Nice twist at the end. But the main character is exhausting. We spend the entire book inside her disturbed mind. The development of her partner is weak and unrealistic. I would have said the development of Rosie was weak but we actually learn more about her than the partner Mason. The brother did not fulfill his purpose in the book and it could have been written without that character.

I felt this book moved at a snail's pace 🐌 which isn't necessarily a bad thing (snails are adorable!) depending on your reading mood.. but for me, it wasn't so much a suspenseful feeling, I more found myself getting a little frustrated 🙃

Scenes and thoughts were repeated over again, which in the case of Winona's mind, I do understand. This book did a fantastic job of understanding and displaying trauma.

I liked how Winona's obsessive thoughts, reactions and paranoia were used to show the effects of her trauma. I also liked her determination to find answers and her devotion for her best friend. I am however very grateful I am not Mason, and I am grateful I'm not Winona and no longer have to live inside her head. At points I was even wondering if maybe she could be

I feel this strain may have been alleviated somewhat by a change in scenery, but we follow the same pattern day to day on a loop. Maybe this was all intentional to create a feeling of tension or suspense, but unfortunately, I missed out.

With only 30, 20, then 15 pages to go and no major developments, I was getting quite worried this book would end on a cliffhanger (it doesn't 👍)

I wouldn't say there were any twists, personally (not necessarily a bad thing), unless you include whodunnit.
The leadup is again, unfortunately, repetitive with the same scene done 3 times to reach the reveal.

There are 5 main side characters, so you know already it is going to be one of those 5. I think this was a decent number and it was very easy to keep track of the characters. I was so, so grateful it wasn't

I think the character of Jack was the highlight and breathed a bit of fresh air into the story.

In closing, I loved the overall idea of the plot and appreciate the author's dive into the murky depths of trauma.

~

"[Podcast]".. one of the hosts made a joke about the killer. For her, it was content. For me, it was my best friend.

“For Rosie” by For RosieMarnie VingeMarnie Vinge.

Set in Oklahoma City, this narrative revolves around Winona, a woman in her late twenties, who is married to Mason and holds the position of a project manager at an advertising agency. Her life takes a challenging turn when her troubled younger autistic brother, Charlie, moves into their home.
A perpetual shadow hangs over the story in the form of Rosie, Winona's best friend who seemingly fell victim to an unidentified serial killer five years ago. The killer's gruesome pattern involves targeting young blonde women, strangling them, and dumping their lifeless bodies into the river. Winona carries the weight of guilt for her last argument with Rosie before she disappeared, never to be seen again.
The plot takes unexpected twists and turns, enveloping each character in a cloud of suspicion, leaving readers in a state of constant perplexity. Since Rosie's tragic demise, Winona has been undergoing therapy to cope with her psychological issues, emotional barriers, and fears, which have taken a toll on her marriage with Mason. Charlie's presence further complicates their relationship.

Pros:
The narrative maintains a gripping pace, keeping readers on high alert.
Suspicion lingers over every character, making the story engaging.
Readers gradually empathize with the lead character's plight.

Cons:
Character development remains somewhat lacking.
The chemistry, or lack thereof, between the main characters is underexplored.
Winona's unwavering obsession with Rosie's murder can become burdensome.
Certain parts of the story, such as confronting Charlie about his physical altercations with Mason, were left unattended.
The abrupt revelation of the serial killer without any prior hints may leave readers dissatisfied.

Verdict: A solid three and a half stars.

FOR ROSIE by Marnie Vinge is a true roller-coaster of a ride. Once or twice I thought “Well, of course it’s (so and so)” only to be thwarted at the next turn, sometimes leaving me with whiplash. I loved it!

Five years ago Winona’s best friend Rosie was thought to be the last victim of serial killer roaming Oklahoma City before the killings mysteriously stopped. Was the killer dead? In jail? Moved on? Why suddenly stop the murders?

Winona struggles in therapy with serious survivor’s guilt after fighting with Rosie on their last night together, and PTSD, but she is finally getting her life back on track; a beautiful home with a great job and a loving fiancé. Then, without warning, bodies start turning up again in similar fashion to the others.

As Winona searches for clues to find out what really happened to Rosie she is also faced with mounting troubles with her younger brother, Charlie, who suffers from mental illness and lives on her property. As Charlie’s behavior continues to spiral and cause problems with her fiancé, Mason, the body count rises. Can Winona figure out what happened that long ago night?

I really enjoy the way Marnie Vinge writes. Her style leads to a smooth, easy, enjoyable read. My pulse was pounding right along with Winona’s as she tried to put the pieces together. Just when I thought it was one person, I realized that those clues were merely red herrings and I had to reshuffle the pieces and start all over. This was my first book by this author, but it will certainly not be my last. WELL DONE!

Winona seemingly has it all. She is married to a great guy, has a job with a great boss, and is thinking of starting a family. However, Winona has been plagued by the death of her best friend Rosie. Years ago, Rosie was brutally murdered. She was strangled and dumped in a river. Now, years later, woman are turning up in similar fashions. Winona is convinced that the man who killed her best friend is back. As news of the deaths spread, Winona risks everything, including her mental health as she desperately searched for answers.

I absolutely enjoyed every second of this book. It was fast-paced and got my attention from page one. I flew through the book. The story was the perfect length, and the ending was satisfying. I felt myself really invested in this story as it played out because I found the narrator so incredibly believable. The main character was flawed and fragile. She wasn't portrayed as being some superhero. She was messy and barely holding it together at times, which enhanced the book in my opinion.

There are only 2 issues with the book that landed me at 4 stars instead of 5. First, the ending was somewhat predictable. I came up with this potential ending early on in the book. Let me be clear, the author doesn't give the ending away. I just read so much of this genre, that I figured out the formula. Second, the main character was a bit annoying at times. I found her to be fragile but in a way that almost felt over the top.

Solid 4 stars. Really enjoyed it. I cannot wait to read more by this author.
