The New York Times bestselling author returns with a mystery with a touch of magical realism and a strong, female bookstore owner and bibliotherapist at its heart.
Miracle Springs, North Carolina, is famed for its healing springs. But bookstore owner Nora Pennington has a tendency to land in a different kind of hot water. Though she loves to practice bibliotherapy by finding the perfect books for her customers while listening to their secrets, she also likes to bury her nose in the occasional local crime…
Nora escaped her past a decade ago. So it feels like a visit from another world when Kelly Walsh—the woman her ex-husband left her for—walks through the door of Miracle Books along with her son, a sweet, serious boy with a talent for origami. Kelly hasn’t come to gloat, though. As it turns out, she’s been dumped too. She’s also terribly ill, and all she wants from Nora is forgiveness.
Shockingly, however, this woman who’s been the victim of so much misfortune is about to become a murder victim. Who would do such a thing? Certainly not Nora, but that doesn’t stop the gossip and suspicion—especially after Kelly’s brother claims that he saw the two women arguing.
In seeking justice for Kelly, The Secret, Book, and Scone Society joins forces with the sheriff’s department, but they’ve barely begun their probe when life throws another wrench. After serving a twenty-year sentence, Estella’s father returns to Miracle Springs. And when his past comes back to haunt him, it might be more than the four friends can handle.
“Red herrings abound along with plenty of tips on choosing books.”— Kirkus Reviews
USA Today and New York Times bestseller author Ellery Adams has written over forty novels and can’t imagine spending a day away from the keyboard. Ms. Adams, a Native New Yorker, has had a lifelong love affair with stories, food, and rescue animals. She likes to spend her free time rearranging the bookshelves in her home in central North Carolina.
Ellery's Series Include: Secret, Book, & Scone Society (Kensington) Book Retreat Mysteries (Kensington) Books By the Bay Mysteries (Berkley Prime Crime), Charmed Pie Shoppe Mysteries ((Berkley Prime Crime), Molly Appleby Antiques & Collectibles Mysteries (Beyond the Page), and Hope Street Mysteries (Beyond the Page).
Ellery also writes genre-blending fiction focusing on women and their inner monsters. Her first release in this exciting new direction is Invasive Species, which hits the shelves 4/14/206.
Paper Cuts by Ellery Adams is the sixth book in the Secret, Book, & Scone Society southern cozy mystery series. It continues to bring contemporary issues and engaging characters to the story. An independent book store, Miracle Books, is owned by Nora Pennington. She’s known for her window displays and her ability to match customers with the perfect book. While Miracle Springs, North Carolina is famous for its healing hot springs, Nora is the one that ends up in hot water in this novel.
Nora left her old life behind 10 years ago. However, when Kelly Walsh, the woman her ex-husband left her for, and her son, Tucker, wants forgiveness, Nora is ready. When Kelly is murdered, Nora becomes a person of interest. But Nora and her friends Secret, Book, and Scone Society book club aren’t about to let matters lie and depend entirely on the police department, despite Nora dating the sheriff.
Nora, as well as several of the other characters, are well developed, flawed, and complex. There’s also a lot of chemistry between Nora and Sheriff Grant McCabe. However, romance is a minor part of the story. The secondary characters provide additional interest and conflict. It was great to see the addition of new characters to the story line: Val, Kirk, Davis, Derrick, and Gus. I wonder if they will show up in future books in the series?
The story is well-written, with a few twists, and provides enough background that it can be read as a standalone. However, readers would be missing the character development and some details if they start with this one. It is plotted well and has characters that are emotionally rich. The novel shines a light on grief, mistakes, greed, murder, reintegration into the community after prison, books, friendship, a little romance, and how a development disorder can affect individual’s behavior and social interactions.
I enjoyed the literary quotes that were at the beginning of each chapter as well as the books and authors that are mentioned throughout the novel. Additionally, there are several book lists provided at the end of the novel as well as a mystery reader’s guide. Be prepared to add several books to your want-to-read list.
Overall, this was an entertaining and well-written novel with great characters. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Kensington Books and Ellery Adams provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for April 25, 2023. ---------------------------------------- My 4.12 rounded to 4 stars review is coming soon.
This is the sixth book in the Secret, Book , and Scone Society series and the first one that I have read. I do not think my enjoyment of the book was affected in any way by not reading the earlier ones first, although I enjoyed this one enough to make me want to go back and read the others!
Our main character is Nora Pennington who owns a bookshop in Miracle Springs, North Carolina. She has a group of friends who each has a secret in their past and this story explores Nora's. A murder occurs, Nora is the main suspect, and she has to work to clear herself.
I enjoyed the mystery which was involved but carefully worked out with all the loose ends tied up. The characters were well drawn and behaved realistically. I especially liked the young neurodivergent boy with his special talents on the one hand and his huge meltdowns on the other.
Altogether a well written and entertaining story, well worth reading.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is the sixth book in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society series. I have read a couple of the earlier books but not all of them and I didn’t have any issues following along with this one. I think this is a fun cozy mystery series and I love just the hint of magic in this otherwise completely realistic series. I will say it’s not my favorite when the main character is wrongly accused, but I thought it worked in this one. I did think the protagonist and her gang of crime solving book lovers took a long time to figure this one, but it was still a fun mystery. Nora has settled into her life new life. She has a group of dear friends, her bookstore is successful, and she’s almost saved up enough for a car. Unfortunately the past she ran from is about to catch up with her and with it suspicion that she is capable of murder. I really liked Tucker and hope that he becomes a re-occurring character along with Gus who is a great character.
Paper Cuts is the 6th book in the Secret Book and Scone Society series. I have read this series from the beginning. The story takes place in the town of Miracle Springs. The town is known for it's healing water. People with all different illness would come. The main character is Nora owner of the Miracle Book book store. She brought an old train station and land behind which she restored. She bought an old caboose and converted it into her home behind the store. Shelton Vega is her friend and employee. She and her book club friends, June, Hester, Estella and Nora go into a new store called Tea Flowers a tea and flower shop. The store is owned by Val and Kirk Walsh. They moved to town with Kirk's sister and her son as his sister was sick. After finishing their tea Nora goes to pay for the plant she bought and noticed that Val kept looking at her which made her feel uncomfortable. Nora had been burned in a car accident years ago and she had scars on her arms and hands, Estelle's father, Gus, is getting out of prison and will be coming to live with her.
Kelly Tucker and her son, Tucker (Tuck) came to the shop. Nora could tell that she was ill. She bought her son the origami kit and book. She had just moved to town. She did not expect to live that long.
Sheriff Grant McCabe was Nora's boyfriend. When walking to her home there was a basket with a dead blackbird in it. The flowers that were in the basket represented forgiveness, humility, commitment and betrayal. The blackbird represented bad omen. The next day she called Tea Flowers and asked about the basket and who sent it. Val was rude when she asked about it.
There was discussion about the two casino's that were hoping to build near their town, One was the Cherokee Nation and the other is Leviathan.
Nora is having dinner with Estelle at The Pink Lady, owned by Jack, Estelle's boyfriend. While there they see Val, Kirk, Kelly and Tucker having dinner. Nora wants to ask them about the basket. Once outside Tucker gives her a beautiful origami. Kelly tells her that she had sent the basket She was the woman who was with her ex=husband, Laurence, when Nora went to confront him. Nora was so upset and tried to leave on her moped. Kelly grabbed at her shirt and Nora pushed her away as she left. She went home in shock and fell asleep on her couch.
McCabe and a deputy came to her house and told her that Kelly Walsh was dead and she was a suspect in her death. McCabe told her that he loved and believed in her but they would have to keep their distance for now. Davis Godwin was her lawyer and told her that Kelly had been suffocated. Someone had come up behind her and used an arm around her neck. Val had told the police that Kelly had been talking to someone in their back yard with the same description as Nora. Davis got her out of jail but told her to stay away from the Walsh's.
Nora found Tucker in the back of her store. He was sitting on the floor making butterflies for his dead mother. Nora called Kirk and told him that Tucker was there. He said he would come and get her. When Nora went out front to look for him she ran into Deputy Hollowell with her K-9 dog. She is very hostile towards Nora. Asked if Tucker was in her store. Nora told her that she could not come in the store with her dog as there were children in there. Kirk comes and gets Tucker. Kirk tells Nora that he had told Kelly not to tell Nora like she did. He didn't blame her and invited her to come to their house so they could talk. Nora went and they talked. Val still felt that Nora was the killer. She admitted that she had been angry towards Nora for years. If Nora's marriage had been stronger her husband would not have met Kelly and ruined both her and their lives. Kirk is shocked at what Val said. Kirk tells Nora that Lawrence was disappointed in Tucker a he was not the boy he wanted since Tucker had Asperger. Kirk wanted to show Nora the books Lawrence's mother left for Tucker to sell. He gives her the list to go over. She takes it home to go over. She went over the list and realized that the books were a real collection. Could this be the reason Kelly was killed? She calls Jasper Andrews and tells him about her concern. She had passed the info to the police to follow-up. Nora goes to Kirk and tells him about the books. She looks at 4 books in each box as well as finds boxes about valentines. About the books she tells Kirk that the best thing he should do is to sell them through a specialized book seller or an auction house. Asked if he had a safe place to put them. Later that night she saw Deputies Andrews and Hollowell on her deck. They told her that there was a break-in at the Walsh's and books were taken. Hollowell said that she was sure that Nora's prints were there. Nora called Davis and he told her he would be there to met her. They questioned her about the books. She gave them the list of what they were worth. They let her go. Davis again told her to stay away from the Walsh's.
This is where I will leave the rest of this story to the reader. So much is going on that it would be hard for me to explain but it comes to an exciting climax that will keep the reader wanting to find out more.
I really liked this book. I loved the closeness of Nora and her friends, her relationship with Grant. I look forward to the next adventure of the Secret Book and Scone Society.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for the ARC.
Nora Pennington owns Miracle Books—a warm and cozy store to go and sip on a cuppa while you browse for books, or have a chat with Nora about the best books for you to read.. The members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society—Nora, Hester, Estella, June and Sheldon—also meet for book club discussions, and more, as the five are very close friends. When Nora helps a female cancer patient and her young child find some origami books, she’s unknowingly meeting someone from her bitter past. When she realizes the identity of this woman, Nora tells her to stay away from her! Unfortunately, the next morning, the woman is dead, and Nora is a person of interest in her murder. Deputy Grant McCabe loves Nora. Of course, he believes she’s innocent; however, the badge he wears means they have to stay separated during the investigation.
This mystery has books galore, compassionate friends, and humor! I always enjoy the sayings on the coffee cups Nora and Sheldon use to serve customers. The central characters who make this story come alive are well fleshed out making them comfortable to mingle with as you read the story. If you’ve read previous stories, you know these characters history and that you’d enjoy being friends with them.
Author Ellery Adams has a few surprises up her sleeves for readers’ enjoyment in this sixth installment. All the bad people receive justice at the end. I highly recommend “Paper Cuts”.
I honestly reviewed an unedited digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to the author, Ellery Adams, and publishers Kensington Cozies and Kensington Books, for the advance digital copy of PAPER CUTS.
Nora lives in a small town in North Carolina known for healing, and she herself operates a small bookstore which she runs on the the premise of bibliotherapy-- recommending the right books for people's needs, to help them heal, if necessary. (This is a real thing, bibliotherapy; my psychiatrist and therapist both have practiced this with me and it is very effective in my treatments.) Nora also collects and keeps secrets, as is natural in the course of her efforts, which makes her useful in strange situations-- like when one of her customers turns up murdered. She naturally must help with the investigation; she can't resist. But she also looks like a target-- to the people who have something to hide, and to the people looking for an explanation, and dating the Sheriff does her no favors. How will she clear her name and protect herself and the other people at risk?
I decided to request this book from NetGalley because I read another of Adams's books and didn't favor it, as such. But I really believe in giving authors second chances! And I'm so glad I did here, this was a fun, exciting, bemusing mystery. The tone and narrative voice were just right, eager and bookish, but still serious. Not quite as "cozy" as the other book I read! I really enjoyed this book.
I thought the climax needed a little more, since it was simply delivered in a conversation between two protagonists. The denouement was more exciting than the climax, but it was still fun; the pacing was just a little off.
My favorite thing about PAPER CUTS is the character Gus, who is an ex-offender. I love when writers use their platforms to draw attention to important issues, and the challenges faced by ex-offenders to find work and restart their lives, and even how often they are roped into scams, is worthy of page space. Thank you Ms. Adams for writing Gus's story.
PAPER CUTS is technically the 6th book in the "A Secret, Book, and Scone Society" series, but it stood well on its own. I look forward to reading more from this series!

I treasure each book in the Secret, Book and Scone Society series. Rising way above the tricky mystery and sharply drawn cast of characters, this series demonstrates the power of friendships and kindness in navigating life's bumps and u-turns. Nora Pennington's past threatens her hard-won happiness when she is suspected of murder. You don't want to miss this series!
Ellery Adams has done it again! As an avid reader and an ardent fan of The Secret, Book, and Scone Society, I can confidently say that her latest installment in the series is an absolute must-read. Adams has skillfully crafted a plot that keeps readers on their toes, as Nora's past comes back to haunt her in unexpected ways. The author deftly explores the complexities of Nora's character, forcing her to confront her demons and decide her own fate. This series expertly toes the line between a cozy mystery and a deeper exploration of human nature, making it a unique and captivating read. The camaraderie and bond between the ladies in the group is palpable and heartwarming, making it impossible not to love each and every one of them. If you're a fan of mysteries, then you absolutely must dive into this series. Ellery Adams is an auto-buy author for me, and after reading this latest installment, I have no doubt that she will be for you too.
Nora Pennington often finds herself in some tough situations, but she has great friends, her bookstore, and a boyfriend. However her past she though she left behind a decade before has caught up with her. After a shock of her life, a body is found and she is the prime suspect. She has to prove her innocence.
This book is probably my favorite so far. We discover so much more about Nora’s past. We also get to know a few new characters. One of the new characters could be a new favorite secondary character and another one is one you will love to hate. All the characters are relatable in some way. The mystery is well plotted with plenty of surprises. I recommend this book to mystery lovers.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I have not been by anyone.
DNF after 37% 🧻 The prose is simple, upbeat, and kitschy, i'm just not a fan. Very much "chic-lit" with people entrenched in eachother's unnecessary and mundane drama..... Some people like that sort of peesash. I'm going to act on the sage advise of one of my favorite reviewers, "life is too short to read books that you don't enjoy", DNF already! This book was just not "my cup of tea." Obtained this book in a goodreads giveaway.
Nora thought her past was behind her. She has moved on, has friends, a business and the love of a wonderful man. But the appearance of Kelly and her son tears down the walls she has built around her heart. The child is her ex-husbands, and he is struggling with his mother’s death. Suspects pile up as to who could have killed his mother, Nora's ex-husband’s wife, who happened to be the affair that took her husband from her. More fingers point to Nora as the culprit. The problem is, most likely, Kelly’s son, knows who did it, but he has severe autism, and his only form of communication is through his origami creations.
I had a hard time getting into the story. Here are some of the reasons why...
I don’t think this is a true stand-alone. It appears that these are reoccurring characters. So, they have a history, and it was hard to follow. The author could have done better in bringing new readers in.
There are also a lot of characters, and it was difficult keeping up with all of them.
I’m not sure how I felt about a child being involved in a cozy mystery. In some ways, this one is supposed to feel justified, but it seemed a tactic that I wasn’t too comfortable experiencing as a reader.
The evidence gathering wasn’t always clear to the reader and the suspects were a bit too easy to spot. The story was straightforward, but a bit slow at times.
It might be better for readers to start at Book 1.
Still…
It didn’t leave the reader hanging, as there was resolution.
The one thing I will say I enjoyed the most was the opening line of the story.
“I loved this book.”
I just wish I could say that it applied to this one.
P.S. - I am not going to rate this book.
I know I am an outlier about this book.
The fact that I have not read the earlier books, I think has put me at a disadvantage for having more insights into the existing characters.
This is the sixth book in the A Secret, Book, and Scone Society Series. I’ve only read book one, however, when my booksta-friend Ellery Adams offered to send me a beautiful package that included an ARC of Paper Cuts, I couldn’t pass it up. I found easy to read as a standalone without missing too much of the background story.
❤️ Don’t tell Ellery, but I am not a big cozy mystery fan! Ellery is a friend, so I wanted to read her books and something magical happened…..I really, really enjoyed it!! It helps that Ellery is such a good storyteller and builds the most amazing heartfelt and complex characters that you can’t help but like. She also adds a dose of humor that kept me laughing and who doesn’t love to laugh, right? So, I am now converted to a #elleryadamscozymysteryfan
❤️ Nora Pennington lives in Miracle Springs, NC and owns Miracle Books where she uses her ability and knowledge to match each customer with the perfect book.
❤️ Nora becomes the prime suspect in the murder of her ex-husband’s wife Kelly and that’s when the Secret, Book, and Scone Society join forces with the local police department to seek justice. Can the four friends handle the investigation?
❤️ Ellery isn’t afraid to touch on some of the more serious subject matters such as chronic illness. I felt it added a lot of depth to the story and the characters.
❤️ Read until the very end for a list of book recommendations. I loved and hated this list….loved it because I love finding new books and authors, hated it because I don’t need to add any more books to my never-ending TBR. 🤪
❤️ Read this book if you enjoy female friendships, small-town charm, bookstore settings, chronic illness rep, good food, and a clever mystery.
Every time I read a book in this series, I say it's the best so far. This series is considered a cozy mystery, but it's so much more than that. The story involves people with real problems, and the group of friends work together to try and make things better. I really relate to Sheldon, as I have Fibromyalgia as well, and I understand the ups and downs of flare ups. I was so happy to read about a character with Asperger's Syndrome, as I'm the mom of my own wonderfully unique aspie son. This story made me laugh, cry, get mad, and smile. The mystery was well done and I was shocked at who the murderer was. I highly recommend this series.
This is the sixth in A Secret, Book, and Scone Society series. It is the first I have read and it worked well as a standalone.
Nora Pennington is a bookshop owner in the small town of Miracle Springs, NC, so named because of the legendary healing power of its waters. She is also romantically linked with the local sheriff. When the woman her husband left her for years ago shows up in town and is later found murdered, suspicion falls on Nora. With support from the three other women in A Secret, Book, and Scone Society (they all have a secret in their pasts), and some newcomers in town, she uncovers a mystery that will help solve that murder and another related one, as well as thwart her ex husband’s shady business plans.
The wrongly accused is not my favorite storyline, but this one was tolerable. This is a cozy mystery; lots of tea, flowers, baked goods, and bookish references. Beyond that, it has decent plot development, some charming characters, strong female models, some humor. And, kudos for featuring and demonstrating some understanding of a neurodiverse child.
Fans of Ellery Adams’ writing are sure to enjoy this latest addition to her body of works; cozy mystery aficionados who have not read her yet should seek her out.
Thanks to #netgalley and #kensingtonbooks for the ARC.
Reading this series feels like spending time with close friends. I adore the friendship between Nora, June, Estella and Hester. Their support of each other and their loyalty is what everyone wants in friendship.
This is book 6 in the Secret, Book & Scone Society series. the past comes back to haunt Nora. One of her ex-husband's ex-wives moves to Miracle Springs and is very sick with a terminal illness and she wants Nora's forgiveness. Then she becomes a murder victim and people are looking at Nora as the most likely suspect. Could Nora have done this? Other things are happening too - Estella's father just got out of prison after 21 years and has moved in with Estella. There's an issue with land for a Casino between the Cherokee who want to own it and a developer who thinks he should have it. What is really happening in Miracle Springs, North Carolina?
I love this series and have been following it and another by Ellery Adams. Her cozy myteries are for curling up and geting lost in time - and that's just what I did. This was a really good one and I stayed totally engrossed in the story.
Thanks to Kensington Books through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on April 25, 2023.
Outstanding plot! I absolutely don't know how the author keeps coming up with better and better storylines that make the characters even more interesting and likable. The author keeps expanding the circle of friends to include more interesting and diverse characters with unique backgrounds to draw the reader further into the story! The characters all have a messy backstory that has made them the wonderful people they are today, but sometimes the backstory comes to the present and that is what we see in this book. Once again Nora is at the center of the mystery and it looks like there is a new cop in town who is determined to destroy the quiet and happy life she has built with her eclectic group of friends. I absolutely can't wait to see what web the author weaves to capture me in the next book, but you can bet that I'll be first in line to find out!
Nora, the owner of Miracle Books, tries to heal people's woes with a unique set of books she personally selects for them.
Hester runs the Gingerbread House bakery. Customers tell her a little bit about their lives and what brought them to Miracle Springs. Then she bakes them up a “comfort scone”.
June works at the hot springs spa where people come to rejuvenate themselves.
Estella is a beautician who tries to help her clients find their true selves.
Sheldon is an honorary member, he works for Nora and suffers from fibromyalgia. He is just the sweetest person.
Nora Pennington came to Miracle Springs, North Carolina to escape her past. Now a decade later her past catches up with her. The woman her ex-husband left her for, Kelly Walsh has entered her store with her autistic son Tucker who happens to love origami. She tells Nora that Lawrence has dumped her too. She is very ill and wants Nora to forgive her for the drama she brought to her life.
Before Nora can even get a grasp on her feelings Kelly is murdered and when Kelly's brother claims he witnessed the two women arguing and that Nora gave Kelly a push Nora finds herself on the short list of suspects.
To clear her name and get justice for Kelly The Secret, Book, and Scone Society starts their own investigation. This is even more important when Nora's significant other, Sheriff Grant McCabe is forced off the case.
There is another happening in Miracle Springs, Estella’s father has been released from prison after 20 years. Like Nora, his past rears its ugly head, and if he isn't careful he could be back behind bars.
_____
If you have read any of Ellery Adams' books you know she creates vivid and diverse characters and that friendship between the key players is always strong. The friendships of the characters in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society Mystery series are no exception. They work and play well together in everything they do and when one is in trouble they rally together to protect their own.
Each book in the series also has relevant social issues. This time that includes an autistic child learning to make his way in the world who now also has to deal with losing his mother. Adams also shines a light on a man trying to reacclimate to life out in the world after being imprisoned for two decades. Both characters are involved throughout the whole story so these themes are delved into and handled in the most excellent way. Tucker is such a cool kid and Gus went to jail for protecting his daughter and she is so supportive of him as he becomes a new resident of Miracle Springs. I hope both continue to appear in the books going forward.
With Nora's past a theme in this book readers are reminded of why she came to Miracle Springs and have an even better understanding as we meet her ex. Sadly for Nora, she relives the moment of the accident and the aftermath again. She still feels the pain not only from the visual scars but in her heart. While I always encourage everyone to read series books in order to really get to know the characters, if you haven't read previous books the details presented in this book will help you understand Nora. I am always in awe of the woman and her gift to help people through books. Ms. Adams must do tons of research to enable her protagonist to do this.
The murder mystery was so well-plotted. It was hard because Grant and Nora had to keep their distance even when she became a target. Detective Hollowell made things even harder. No spoilers but she pushed my buttons and Nora's too. The mystery has a lot of moving parts and several twists. I enjoyed how all the subplots were twisted into the main plot. It was easy to escape right into the story.
As a cancer survivor, my heart broke for Kelly. She knew she had very little time left and was trying to get everything in place for young Tucker. Trying to explain to him what was happening to her and that she would soon be gone but that he would be cared for is unfathomable and then the murderer took what little time they had away from them. That made this an emotional read for me.
Paper Cuts, what a perfect title, is a wonderful cozy mystery filled with incredible characters. I love this series and can't wait until next April when I will get to visit Miracle Springs again.
Set in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, this is book 6 in the ‘The Secret, Book and Scone Society’ and features bookstore owner and bibliotherapist, Nora Pennington.
When the bell jingles above the door and a woman and her son enter, Nora Pennington’s life changes. The peace she thought she’d achieved is suddenly disrupted as she’s brought face to face with her past. Before long, chaos ensues and a body is discovered.
Thankfully, Nora has besties June, Hester and Estella, who help her to make sense of the chaos and offer support. The foursome is a force to be reckoned with and it made me smile as I read about how they depend on each other for strength. Individually, they are battle fatigued and scarred but together they face the world fuelled by their compassion and kindness for other hurting souls. Can the fearsome foursome battle all this crime before cracks start appearing in their armour?
You’ll love the vivid descriptions of the setting as much as the female-driven story, and before long, you’ll get caught up in the murder mystery. Although I came late to this series, I had no trouble getting comfortable with the characters and felt like I’d been in Miracle Springs for ages. I can see why this series is getting rave reviews. The author’s exploration of forgiveness, gossip and second chances is uplifting.
I was gifted this copy by Kensington Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
In the sixth installment of Adams’ Secret, Book, and Scone Society series, we get a glimpse into our main character, Nora Pennington’s life prior to her relocating to Miracle Springs, North Carolina and opening up a bookshop/coffee shop. And it truly is eye opening!
Presently, some of the group has each gone through personal changes in their lives. Nora is now dating the sheriff, Grant McCabe, Estrella’s father, Gus is getting out of prison and looking for a job and Hester is trying to figure out her personal life.
So, when Nora meets a woman, Kelly and her son Tucker who has Aspergers Syndrome at the newly opened shop, Tea Flowers, she feels quite uncomfortable. The slight woman cannot take her eyes of her. What she soon discovers is Kelly is dying and she was the mistress who broke up Nora’s marriage. Even more shocking, it looks as if Tucker is her ex’s son! Kelly wants to make amends with Nora. Nora does not and pushes her away.
Then there is a knock at Nora’s door. She is the prime suspect for the MURDER of Kelly! She is taken in and the sheriff must stay out of the interviewing process due to their relationship. Unfortunately, there is a new officer in town who has made it known to Nora that she does not particularly like her and is making her life miserable. She has no idea why.
It becomes Nora’s job to try and get herself out of this mess with very little help from those she has always trusted. But unfortunately, someone is trying to frame her. She begins to relive her twisted past and her not so healthy relationship with her ex-husband, who seems to still be the jerk he was all those years ago.
But there is more than just one mystery in this riveting story. Nora’s ex-mother-in-law seems to have left a set of books to her grandson, Tucker. Why would she do that? Are the two mysteries tied together in some way?
And with all this going on there is discussion going on to open a casino. One hopefully to be open by the Cherokee and the other privately. There is never a dull moment in this small town!
Paper Cuts is another wonderful Ellery Adams cozy, with characters who we seem to know so well, and the reader is quite vested in. And as usual, Nora is always giving her clients of the bookstore recommendations of what books to read next, which means we get a wonderful list of books to read! Note: Always have a pencil and paper handy for those gems!

I read the first 5 books in this series as audiobooks, so this was the first one in the series that I read in digital format. It was just as enjoyable as the previous ones, if not more so. The fact that this series just seems to be getting stronger as it goes on was a pleasant surprise.
To start with, I’m even more invested in the primary characters in the story. Having seen Nora and her little crew of women come together through good times and bad has only made me feel like I care about them even more than I did initially. And there’s definitely an emotional component to this story.
The past comes back for some more of the characters in this story—namely Nora and Estella. Which makes sense, since both June and Hester had their turns in previous books. In this case, Kelly, the woman that Nora’s ex-husband left her for shows up in Miracle Springs. She’s terminally ill and has a young son who has Asperger’s, and her presence turns Nora’s life upside down, especially when she shows up dead after an argument with Nora. This lands Nora in hot water with the law, and she has no choice but to do a little investigating on her own (with the help of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society) to clear her name. As for Estella? Her long-imprisoned father is getting out and staying in Miracle Springs.
I loved the way the mystery came together. There were little clues throughout the story, and I picked up on a lot of them, but struggled to put them all together. That’s one of the best parts of this series, since the mystery isn’t easy to figure out until all the pieces are laid out for us. I also enjoy how there’s a real small-town feel to Miracle Springs, with people coming together to help each other when someone is in need.
This book is a little more emotional for Nora, since the past she’s worked so hard to escape comes to smack her in the face, and she can’t do anything to get away from it, and one of her main supports isn’t available to her. But she unexpectedly finds a new support, and unfortunately, a new adversary. It also deals really well with the addition of a neurodiverse kid in the cast of characters, and I loved the fact that the author includes a list of books mentioned throughout the story in the back of the book. This story makes me look forward to more books in the series, since this one was probably my favorite out of all of them.
I will admit this started slowly for me and I could not get into it. It wasn’t the story; it was me so I put it down to fully savor it later and I’m glad I did. I picked it up again yesterday and finished it all in one shot. I got drawn in right away to the story and didn’t want it let it go. We learn more about Nora’s past and see more of her vulnerabilities when she always seems so strong. I loved the addition of Gus to the mix and all the hints of what’s to come in the future. This is such a feel-good series with wonderful characters and heartwarming stories.
I received a copy from #NetGalley and @KensingtonBooks for an honest review.
Paper Cuts is the sixth book in the delightful Secret, Book and Scone Society series. Themes of forgiveness and moving on from the past weave throughout this book as protagonist Nora Pennington meets Kelly, the woman her ex-husband Lawrence left her for. Kelly is terminally ill and asks Nora’s forgiveness. When Kelly is murdered before Nora can respond with more than shock, Nora and the other members of the Secret, Book and Scone society work to find justice for Kelly.
I truly love this series. The books are a love letter to the power of reading and an exploration of the strength of women’s friendship and support. Because this story deals partially with Nora coming to terms with her past, it is particularly satisfying for long time readers of the series. There is also an intriguing part about different flowers and their meanings, as well as some mention of origami.
The mystery is well plotted and there are plenty of suspects to choose from. All of the established characters such as Sheldon Vega and Sheriff McCabe are present. A few new characters are introduced and I hope that some of them appear in future stories. They are a great addition to the Miracle Springs community. Also, a life changing event occurs for one of the characters which will certainly play a part in future installments.
All in all, this story is a wonderful addition to the Miracle Springs stories. I can’t recommend this series enough. It is the perfect blend of women’s fiction and cozy mystery with a touch of magical realism blended in.
Part mystery, part women’s fiction, and all heart, this is the best installment yet in The Secret, Book & Scone Society series.
In this book, Ellery Adams celebrates the power of friendship and family while also being unafraid to explore the heartache and grief that are unavoidable parts of life. At its core, this book is about a group of women who are there for each other. Their powerful friendship seems them through many difficult moments and changes. Nora is especially challenged in this book, as she comes face to face with the woman her husband left her for. Not only that, but Nora is accused of murder and wonders if her romantic relationship can withstand this stress.
This novel cuts right to the heart of what matters in life. I was so moved by the characters, both old and new, and cheered them on through their struggles and joys. I adore the way different relationships of all kinds have developed throughout the series. Adams knows how to bring out a variety of emotions while keeping the plot moving. Her writing style is beautiful as well. Whether you’ve read all the books in the series or whether this is your first, you’ll be riveted by Nora her journey to put things right. I recommend this series to every single person who loves books. It’s one of a kind.
My apologies to the other ten books on my NetGalley shelf, but when an Ellery Adams book shows up I can't help myself. It gets moved to the top of the list. Like the other books in the Secret, Book and Scone series, Paper Cuts is a compelling read with a satisfying ending. The characters live and grow together in the way of real life friends and those of us who've read the entire series care about what is going on in their lives. The mystery is engaging and has some unexpected scenarios. The setting provides us our true escape though and we find ourselves wanting to book a trip to Miracle Springs. Most satisfying to me, however, is the luscious bibliotherapy. So thoroughly curated, there are lists for all situations and my TBR list is now even more out of control. Well done Ellery Adams. My only complaint is the long wait till the next book comes out. Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington books for this ARC of Paper Cuts by Ellery Adams.

Once again, Ellery Adams proves why The Secret, Book and Society is one of my favorite series. Violent death again comes to the town of Miracle Springs, nestled in the North Carolina mountains. This time, our main character, Nora, is a suspect. Along the way we learn more about her earlier life with her ex-husband. The four friends, Nora, June, Hester and Estella, show why they are such good friends, supporting each other. It was great to see Nora’s love life looking up! In addition to these friends, Sheldon is a fabulous character, who also works at Nora’s bookstore. Nora has a gift for finding just the right book for someone, a kind of “bibliotherapy.”
We get introduced to a couple of new characters who I hope will return in future books: Gus, Estella’s father, newly released from prison, and Tucker, a neurodiverse 10-year-old, who loves to do origami. The new deputy in town is written in such a way that readers will take a dislike to her, so it will be interesting to see how her character changes in future books, if at all.
Because this book gives a bunch of backstory detail, I think it would be ideal for someone who wanted to try this series but is reluctant to go back and start with book one (this is book six).
There are lovely quotations at the start of each chapter, each with some bearing on the action of that chapter. In addition, there’s a bibliography at the back of the book, listing all the books mentioned in the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Cozies for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Dear @Goodreads and @kensingtonbooks for this #SecretBookAndSconeSociety free book giveaway. I truly enjoyed it. I have to sincerely apologize to you both for not realizing that my copy of "Paper Cuts" was an ARC and I should have reviewed it immediately upon reception, as the book was released on April 25, 2023. I assume I received it before then, but wanted to read the previous two books in the series before this one. I will probably never again win an ARC. Oh dear. On to the review. Thank you Ellery Adams for writing a book w/ a sympathetic portrayal of a neurodivergent person! How beautifully this was done! Tucker Walsh has moved to Miracle Springs w/ his mom, Kelly (who has terminal cancer), and his aunt and uncle, Val and Kirk. Nora, the book shop owner, meets Tucker in her store, where he is sitting and folding paper origamis, at which he is truly talented. Val and Kirk have opened a tea shop/plant store in town. Kelly really wants to meet Nora, but I can't reveal WHY w/o a major plot spoiler. Nora's world is rocked when Kelly tells her their connection, and Nora storms away on her moped. Kelly is found dead the next day. Did Nora cause Kelly's death? The sheriff's office thinks so. This whole plotline is just really tense, and really makes the whole "cozy" darker than the rest in the series, b/c Nora really DOES look guilty. The other Secret, Book, and Scone Society members support Nora through these hard times, and all their plot lines are advanced, especially Estella's (the beauty salon/spa owner) when her Dad finally gets out of prison and starts a new life w/ her. So was Kelly murdered? Or did she succumb to her cancer? Who can help Tucker adjust to his mom's death? Who can "save" Nora from a murder accusation? What will this suspicion do to Nora's growing romance w/ the Sheriff, Grant? Read it and see. I give this one a whole-hearted five stars b/c of the tenser-than-normal-for-a-cozy tone and for all the references to books which I have also enjoyed. Thanks again to @Goodreads and @kensington books for the ARC.

This is a series of strong women friendships, of great love of books and of love of community and kindness . The heart of this series is compassion and caring for those less fortunate. It is a theme the author includes with such love in each character and their contributions. Each mystery draws the reader in with unique clues that keep you guessing to conclusion. This is a exceptional addtion to the series and a not to be missed cozy read. Thank you to the publisher, the author and Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinioin is my own.
The atmospheric description of Miracle Springs North Carolina is done with such warmth I want to immediatly move to Miracle Springs with each new book. Nora moved to Miracle Springs and opened a charming bookstore in a old train depot that is loved by the community. She has a wonderful employee with Fibromylegia that I appreciate reading about as one who suffers from the disease. Well done to the author. Nora is infinitly kind and sensitive to others as a Biblotherapist who knows instinctivly what books people need. Its her special gift and how she secretly serves her community and customers helping others. The bookstore serves tea and coffee with wonderfully clever names like "Agatha Christie Tea." and a variety of "book pastries" that every biblophile wants . Nora has a warm inviting atmospher in her bookstore that is brought to life by the author. She has a strong group of women friends that are local business owners and together they form the Secret Book and Scone Society.
Nora has a past that emerges in this book . The now ex wife of Nora's ex husband appears with a lovely neuro divergent son and a story of being dumped by Nora's ex husband. Nora feels sympathy for the woman and immediatly bonds with the boy over his love of oragami. The circumstances her ex husband caused are upsetting to Nora and she is shocked when the woman first introduces herself.. Out of fear Nora pushes the woman away from her and runs. When the woman is murdered that night and Nora is the suspect her friends rally to save her and they investiagte to find the true suspect. A mysterious woman who looked like Nora was seen with the victim by her relative so Nora is immediatly suspect . Her long time detective boyfriend must stay away from her causing her more distress and she is harassed by one of his officers who is determined to prove Nora gulity. As Nora fights to save her reputation, her life and her business her problem ex husband appears and Nora has to face him and her past. The suspects abound and clues emerge as Nora's faithful friends in the Secret Book and Scone Society work together to save their friend and find the true murderer. They also take on the responsibility of helping the boy left behind and his relatives in every way they can.
I adored this book and read it cover to cover. The mystery is so intriquing , the setting perfection and the supporting characters all feel like old friends. Every character adds to the theme of warmth and intrique of this next in series. At the end of the book the author has included detailed listings of all the books recommended by subject for her readers. You will find yourself adding to your "to be read" list. A wonderful read that I will return to and a outstanding addition to this wonderful series.
