When a phone call from Nish gets Travis out of bed one bright winter’s morning, it looks as if it’s going to be the best weekend ever.
The Screech Owls’ home town lies beneath a thick fall of snow, topped with a layer of hard, smooth, beautiful ice. The whole world has become one gigantic skating rink. If only there were a way, thinks Travis, for these two wonderful days to last forever.
But before the weekend is over, Travis wishes it had never begun. One of the Screech Owls lies in a hospital bed, unable to move – the victim of a cowardly drunk driver who has fled the scene of the crime.
Now the Screech Owls must face a challenge that would make the toughest hockey game seem easy. Somewhere in the town of Tamarack a criminal is in hiding, and somehow – for the sake of their teammate – Travis and the Screech Owls must find a way to pull together and bring the culprit to justice.
The Screech Owls ’ Home Loss is the eigth book in the Screech Owls Series.

This is a very good read for kids who enjoy hockey. This minor hockey team go to many different big tournaments. In each book they face a new problem, sometimes more realistic than others.
This Screech Owls story takes on a bit of a more serious subject: drunk driving. An ice storm hits the Owls home town of Tamarack and the Owls spend the day playing hockey and then "hitching" rides on the bumpers of unsuspecting cars. During one such ride, a driver comes down the road out of control and hits two players: Wayne Nishikawa and Larry "Data" Ulmar. The driver speeds off before finding out what happened to the hockey players. Nish ends up OK, but Data spends much more time in the hospital with a severed spine. The Owls are devastated, but use their grief as motivation to find the driver of the car.
As I said, a couple of pretty serious topics. I know the idea of "hitching" was introduced to get at the bigger issue of drunk driving. But, the story can also be a morality play about not taking silly chances. That being said, I thought the story was fairly well done. Not preachy--well, not too preachy, and appropriately covered. This is the second Screech Owls book in a row that has covered a more serious topic not necessarily related to hockey. It is a nice change of pace from the solve-the-mystery-and-then-win-the-hockey-tournament format.
These are great chapter books for kids who like Hockey!! What fun books with mysteries that are appropriate for kids 9 and up!
Each book has a an exciting hockey game and a mystery to solve. The characters in the books are very relateable for kids of this age and engaging. I love that their are both boys and girls on the team and they all contribute!
The stories also contain lessons on teamwork, sportsmanship and friendship! Terrific lessons for all kids!
There are a few times when I thought the content was a bit off for the age, but then when you compare it to modern video games, movies and tv shows, it was mild. Kids today are ages ahead of their past counterparts and these books reflect that.
Hockey fans will find a lot to love here. The play-by-play is really fun to read even for non-sporties like myself.
Cover Art - Eye catching and easy to tell the theme of the books.
