Cinderella is a stepmother. The Little Mermaid is long dead. A fake fairest rules the land....
Decades after their happy endings, ten famous fairy tale characters live in a busy, modern society (except the Big Bad Wolf, of course, who lurks in the forest by the Wood Province). Despite the hustle and bustle of everyday activities, however, a shadowy presence is slowly overturning Fairy Blue's precarious "happily ever after." From the Wolf Gang to a nasty presidential candidate to creature trafficking, someone -- or something -- is behind the increasingly anxious state of the kingdom.
New and old fairy tale characters alike must band together to resist, or a deadly tyrant will rise in their midst.
We all have imagined what would cinderella be doing with her life after her happily ever after or snow white. Reading this book gives you a rather interesting version , these beautiful princesses have forgotten what is truly important not beauty but being kind and enjoying life !. I love that it was an easy read, I finished it in a fee days. I did wish the good characters had a happily ever after , they sort of did but it wasn't enough for my romantic heart. Be prepared to see brave children, strong mermaids and some other fairy tale people that we all know from our childhood. I will patiently be waiting to see what other magical books this writer will spin in the future.
4.5! Listen .. I loved Disney growing up. And the happily ever after and always made up stories for what happened after. This?? Great continuation of some of them!
I really love a good fairytale but do you ever wonder what happens after the happy ever after?? Well this shows us and all is not as good as you would think it would be. Cinderella, Snow White, the big bad wolf, Robin Hood, the little mermaid and the pied piper, these are just some of the characters that are in this twisted and a little dark version of, I suppose a not so happy ever after, decades later and it is such a great read! Definitely got a brothers Grimm vibe with the twists and turns and some of it is a little creepy and suspenseful but it’s captivating and engaging with incredible world building and I just didn’t want it to end though it is a fantabulous ending and the author does an amazing job pulling it all together!
This was a really fun, quick, enjoyable read. It was a quirky twist on classic fairytales. All of the characters were super dynamic and hilarious at the same time. I will say something that I enjoyed is that unlike the Disney fairytales, these remain more true to the Brothers Grimme versions, in which not every character gets a happy ending. It balances the line between being lighthearted, but also carrying a certain gravity in the politics and shenanigans of the world. I wish we had got more time in certain characters perspectives, but overall a very engaging read.
This was quite exciting for me, as it's my first ever ARC read - the book isn't actually released until the end of the month. I don't know the author; I was selected via a Facebook group I follow.
The premise is fairly simple; something's rotten in the state of Fairy Blue. Queen Cinderella is turning into her stepmother while her 'ugly' stepsister poses nude and gets herself a recording contract; Snow White runs a beauty magazine and faces a constant battle to convince everyone she's still the fairest in the land; and the Big Bad Wolf is hunting children for a very good reason...
My first impression is that the author has given a lot of thought to the worldbuilding aspect. Taking elements from different fairy tales as well as other inspiration, she's painted a brilliant picture of the land of Fairy Blue. I can see each province so clearly; from the pretty much abandoned Straw Province to the business Silver Province, I can imagine the world in any size, from a small city to a huge country, and it just works. And the rules within the world are seamlessly worked into the story too - there's very little need to question why something works in the way that it does; it all fits together nicely. Even then the backstories are woven into the story in such a way that they both fit with the existing fairy tales, but also fit with the overall narrative the writer is aiming for.
That being said, I did feel like I had been dropped into the middle of a story when I first started reading - I had to stop for a moment and establish whether this was the second book in a series (it isn't). For the first few chapters, I found myself thinking of each chapter as a separate short story set in the same 'verse as this was the only way I could make sense of the action. While they are all interlinked, you go from Snow White to the Big Bad Wolf to the Pied Piper to the Little Mermaid without warning or real explanation. However, as things progress the narrative settles into an easier flow and a more straightforward multi-chapter story.
It's certainly more of a 'twisted' take on a fairy tale, with a darker tone and language, so definitely not suitable for younger readers. I do enjoy this sort of take, more reminiscent of the original tales than the sanitised versions we know from Disney films, as quite often they raise valid questions about the thought behind the story. This is no exception - the author's version of the Pied Piper in particular made me realise just how creepy that particular story is (it's not one I was overly familiar with, but I know the basics, and I'll not look it it in the same way again!).
The writing itself makes for a mostly easy read and is very engaging. However, there are moments where I had to go back and reread paragraphs to try and make sense of a comment or action, and on a couple of small occasions the writer uses words that just don't seem to quite fit with the rest of the prose, which I found a little jarring. But overall, the words cast a very good spell!
Reading this book was an enjoyable experience, but I think it is one I'd need to read multiple times to fully 'get' everything. I wish the author the best with its release!
Amazing book! Great storyline. This book kept me so interested the whole time I did not want to put it down. Hands down would recommend to everyone! A book worth reading more than once.
I loved this book. I’m a huge fan of all the fairy tales. This is definitely a different spin on them. It keeps you entertained and wondering what will happen next. Not a spoiler, there is a beautiful message at the end of the book. Really makes you think. I would recommend this book.
This was a very interesting take on a bunch of fairy tales tossed together in what feels both like a modern world and a twisty version of the way-back settings of the original stories. It's part satire, part societal/political commentary, lots of humor, and even some romance. Really, it's kind of a jumble of stuff that the author does an excellent job bringing together into a tale that makes sense and is fun to read. It took me a bit to get into it and the writing style, but once I did, this went by quickly. Though I feel like I could reread it in a completely different way, which is always a great type of book.
I received this book free from the author, and I am leaving a review of my own accord. Opinions are my own.
Fans of Disney will just adore this book! Wrinkled just released on Amazon yesterday (May 27, 2023)!
Ever wonder what happened to your favorite Disney characters after their happily ever after?
A different world where Cinderella is now Queen, Snow runs a high fashion magazine, and Robin Hood is in disguise.
I enjoyed this book so much! It was such a fun read! Such an interesting take! It's a darker story... not *exactly* a happy ending for everyone involved.
It says "collection"... so it is multiple stories but is read as one. Definitely multiple POVs.
Some TWs to take note of: - che@ting - misc@rri@ge - deaths
There may be some that I missed but the first two are just quick mentions. Just a sentence each.
This book is if you have ever wondered what happens after happily ever after in some of our favorite fairy tales. A fun, quick read that gives a modern twist to classic fairy tales such as Cinderella, Snow White, the Little Mermaid, RobinHood, and more. The world building was good and the author did a great job bringing multiple points of view together. I would definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy retellings of fairy tales. I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
10/10 would definitely recommend reading if you are into a wrinkled after tale. Loved the twists and turns and the way everything was tied up nicely in the end. Would absolutely read again.! Not for people that are looking for the original fairytale ending that's for sure. But absolutely a great read if you are into a real fairytale ending.
I thought this book was going to flop at first. It did take me a minute to get into. But once I did I absolutely loved it! The writing is great and the story telling is amazing. To take Cinderella and turn her into what she was in this book was perfect. All the characters in the book were captured great and the story and how it all came together in the end was spectacular.
An amazingly witty and captivating retelling - so original and kept me engaged the whole time. I recommend this book to everyone! I was initially drawn in by the title and that cover (*swoon*) - but the story was more than I expected and blew me away. Super talented author!
Great story and a fun idea. If you’re looking for a fun read that echos the more serious tones of the original fairy tales, then this is the book for you. If you have the ability to read in general, this book is also for you.
10/10 Such a fun read for anyone who loves fairytales especially those who want to know what could happen after, these have such interesting twists a definite must read
This was a story that just sucked me in right away. So many great fairy tale favorites but in a different setting. Snow White, The Pied Piper, Red Riding Hood and even the troll from The Billy Goats Gruff. Hags, witches and many more all suffering from the reign of Evil Cinderella. She had a habit of getting her own way no matter what. She thrived on her 2 sons but despised her younger stepson. The characters had to learn how to defeat her or they would suffer more. It's a fun read and I think the author did a great job of creating Fairy Blue. From Presidental elections and good vs evil this is a fantastic read.
