The Archons

Rate this book
Captain Alastor is a war hero who commands one of the oldest carriers in the fleet. It is the last of the big ships made for a war fought decades ago. Now the colonies of planets he represents are fighting a war with an enemy that fights using unconventional techniques. They are a terrorist organization known as The Mist.

Senator Price has an ax to grind with Captain Alastor and he will stop at nothing to have the captain removed from active duty. When Captain Alastor discovers that the war with the Mist is nothing but a scam run by politicians, he discovers a real target to bomb, giving Senator Price all the leverage he needs to finally get his nemesis removed from the military.

Sylvia Wright is the leading religious leader of the colonies. She believes in the Tome of Revelations, but she is of an order that has seen its followers decreasing for years. The Tome itself tells of ancient worlds that their colonists escaped from, but very few believe the Tome. Nobody has encountered alien races as described in the Tome and nobody has discovered the location of the ancient colonies.

Captain Alastor is recalled to the Capitol world to be forcibly retired. His ship and crew must travel through the interplanetary gate system to get there. When the gate system fails, they emerge with a collection of civilian ships in an unknown region of space. Before the lost ships can organize and find their location, they come under attack from an advanced alien race. Sylvia Wright is convinced these are the demons foretold in the Tome. Captain Alastor is not convinced until they discover an uncharted inhabited planet.

‘The Archons were knocking over a world every few years’ - A great read!

Utah author Frank DeCaire served in the US Navy as an electronics technician, earned his degree in Computer Science, and served in the software engineering business. He now is a successful science fiction author. His books to date include a series of short story collections, and THE CHRONICLES OF DAPHNE BLAZEFIRE NOVELS (5 books), THE MACKENZIE (MAC) STEELE COLLECTION (5 books), and ESCAPE FROM THE ABYSS, of which THE ARCHONS is Book 1.

One of the many reasons DeCaire book works so well is his inventive use of philosophy that dots some of the pages. For example, a Prologue ‘3,000 years ago’ - “Digital information will not survive the journey. Look at the oldest forms of data that we have in our society today. Only the oldest books have survived. None of the earliest computerized data is still around. Digital mediums become obsolete. Future generations might not have the proper hardware to read information. When people can’t read what is on a memory stick, they just toss it. Like a piece of garbage.” That is only one moment of interest in this epic tale that includes Captain Gavin Alastor, a war hero who commands one of the oldest carriers in the fleet - the last of the big ships made for a war fought decades ago. Now the colonies of planets he represents are fighting a war with an enemy that fights using unconventional techniques. They are a terrorist organization known as The Mist.’ And the novel just soars from that point on - an especially satisfying sci-fi adventure that opens a very promising new series. Recommended
